Description

A CONNECTOR FOR CONNECTING AN ELONGATE ARTICLE TO A MEMBER The present invention relates to a connector for connecting an elongate article to a member and is particularly, but not exclusively, concerned with connectors for use in the construction of structures such as car ports.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a connector having an article receiving means which, in use, receives an end of an elongate article, said article receiving means comprising wall means and means thereon which enable the connector to be connected to a member.
The wall means may comprise a base and an adjacent side wall.
The member may be a supporting wall or like surface e.g. a fence.
Preferably, the connector is provided with a plate-like member for receiving fastening means by which the connector is held to the supporting wall or like surface.
The connector is preferably formed from a plastics material e.g.
by moulding. The plastics material is preferably resilient and tough and may be for example a nylon, polypropylene, or A.B.S. Connectors formed from plastics material are particularly advantageous in that because of their resilience they are capable of receiving ends of elongate articles of differing sizes within a wider tolerance than for example connectors cast in metal. Such connectors are further advantageous in.that they are weather resistant.
The connector may be formed to connect two said elongate articles transverse to each other. Alternatively, the connector may be formed to connect three elongate articles transverse to each other. In either case, the connector may be formed to connect together two said elongate articles in end to end alignment. Such a connector may be arranged to connect a further elongate article so that it is transverse to the two said aligned elongate articles.
A connector in accordance with the invention may be formed to connect three or more elongate articles whereby the articles are retained in a common plane.
The base and two spaced apart side walls of the connector may be formed to define a pocket or channel for receiving the end of the elongate article.
In the case where the connector is formed to connect two said elongate articles transverse to each other, at least two article receiving means may be provided and the side wall of one of said receiving means may form A continuation of the side wall of at least one other receiving means. Additionally, or alternatively, the base of one of said article receiving means may form a continuation of the base of at-least one other article receiving means.
A connector in accordance with the invention may be of substantially cross-shaped form. In such a case, the connector may be of substantially L-shaped form when viewed along the axis along which any one of three elongate articles will be held by the connector.
The article receiving means of a connector in accordance with the invention may be adapted to frictionally grip the elongate article when the article is placed therein. Preferably, the frictional grip is effected by the two spaced apart side walls.
Alternatively or additionally, the base or side walls may be adapted to receive fastening means by which the article is retained in the article receiving means. The fastening means may comprise screws, nails, nuts and bolts or the like.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a structure comprising a plurality of elongate articles interconnected by connectors in accordance with any-one of the eleven immediately preceding paragraphs. The structure may comprise, for example, a car port.
The invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig.1 is a perspective view of a connector in accordance with the invention; Fig.2 is an elevation of the connector shown in Fig.l; Fig.3 is a cross-section through the connector of Figs.1, 2 and 3 on line A-A of Fig.2; Fig.4 is a side view of the connector shown in Figs.l, 2 and 3; Fig. 5 is a plan view of another connector in accordance with the invention; Fig.6 is an elevation of the connector shown in Fig.5; Fig.7 is a perspective view, from above and one side, of a further connector in accordance with the invention; Fig.8 is another perspective view, from below and an opposite side, of the connector shown in Fig.7;; Fig.9 is an elevation df the connector shown in Figs.7 and 8; Fig. 10 is a side view of the connector shown in Figs. 7 to 9; Fig.ll is a plan view of a still further connector in accordance with the invention; Fig. 12 is an elevation of the connector shown in Fig.ll; Fig. 13 is a plan view of a connector in accordance with the invention; Fig.14 is a side view of the connector shown in Fig.13; Fig. 15 is an opposite side view of the connector shown in Figs. 13 and 14.
Fig. 16 is a perspective view of a structure in accordance with the invention; Fig. 17 shows an alternative form of connector having a f cylindrical section.
The connector 10 shown in Figs.1 - 4 comprises a base 12 and opposed side walls 14 and 16 which form a rectangular pocket 17 constituting the aforesaid article receiving means.
In use, the article receiving means receives an end of a rectangular - cross-section elongate article such as a timber or metal beam. The end is retained within the article receiving means by fastening means, such as screws, nails or the like, which are passed through apertures e.g. 18 formed in the side walls 14 and 16.
The connector 10 is used to support the elongate article on a surface such as a wall of a building, hardstanding or the like. The connector 10 and attached elongate article are retained in position with respect to the surface by similar fastening means passed through apertures 20 e.g. defined in a plate 22 adjacent the article receiving means.
The connector is formed, e.g. by moulding, from a tough resilient plastics material such as nylon or polypropylene.
Although the side walls 14 and 16 are shown as being substantially parallel with each other, the connector may be formed such that the said side walls tend to converge thereby frictionally gripping the end of the elongate article.
Although the side walls 14 and 16 are shown as being substantially equal thickness, the said side walls will normally be tapered in cross-section thereby assisting ejection from a mould used to form the connector.
The connector 30 shown in Figs. 5 and 6 comprises a base 32 and upstanding side walls 34, 36 and 38 thereon which define pockets 40, 42 and 44 constituting three respective article receiving means. In use, the ends of two elongate articles are held in end to end alignment within the pockets 40 and 42, and the end of a third elongate article is held within pocket 44 at right angles to the other two said elongate articles. The three elongate articles are thus retained in the same plane.
The connector 50 shown in Figs. 7 - 10 is formed with four pockets 52, 54, 56 and 58. In use, the pockets 52 and 54 -- hold two elongate articles in end to end alignment whilst the pockets 56 and 58 retain two further elongate articles at right angles to the first said elongate articles.
The cross-shaped connector 60 shown in Figs.ll and 12 comprises a base 62 and upstanding walls 64, 65, 66 and 67 thereon which define pockets 68, 70, 72 and 74. The pockets 68 and 70 are at right angles to the pockets 72 and 74.
Accordingly, in use the pockets 68 and 70-are used to retain a pair of elongate articles in end to end alignment, and at right angles to a further pair of elongate articles held in end to end alignment in pockets 72 and 74. A further pocket similar to pocket 58 in- Fig. 7 could be formed beneath the connector 60 as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 12.
The connector 80 shown in Figs. 13 to 15 is adapted to form three spaced pockets 82, 84 and 86 which in use retain the ends of three elongate articles to hold the said three elongate articles at right angles to each other.
Although the previously described connectors have featured rectangular shaped pockets to retain correspondingly shaped elongate articles, it is envisaged that connectors in p accordance with the invention could be provided with different shaped pockets to co-operate with similarly shaped elongate articles.
The structure 100 shown in Fig. 16 comprises a plurality of timber beams 102, e.g. interconnected by connectors 10, 30, 50, 60 and 80 as previously described to form a car port (roof not shown). The connectors 10 are used to support the structure against a wall 106 and on a prepared hardstanding 108. The vertical beams 102 will normally be made of noncombustible material, e.g. steel base. Where such tube is of circular cross-section, the connectors 80, 50 may have the pockets which engage the tube formed cylindrically to receive the vertical beam. Such a connector is illustrated in Fig. 17 where the cylindrical pocket 120 is shown locating a circular cross-section beam 102.
Advantageously, the cylindrical pocket 120 can be produced separately from the T-shaped portion of the connector. In such a case, the pocket 120 could be provided with a circular flange about its upper-most edge through which fastening means, e.g.
screws, or nuts and bolts, could be passed to hold the two portions of the connector together. - Such two part connectors are advantageous in that they permit adjustment of the structure.
