Abstract

Multicoloured plastics sheet material is manufactured by comminuting multicoloured plastics base sheet material to produce granules which are then recombined into coherent sheet form. The method produces a flooring material of improved appearance.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE PRODUCTION OF MULTICOLOURED FLOORING This invention relates to the production of multicoloured flooring.
It is well known to manufacture flooring from particulate thermoplastics material preferably polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In an example of the known technique particles known as chips of PVC are sprinkled onto a support web to form a layer of the required thickness which is then heated before entering a rotary press in which the softened chips weld together to form a coherent sheet which is then separated from the support web.
The finished sheet may have a variegated colour if it is made from different coloured chips blended in appropriate proportions. Highlighting chips, which may be translucent, may be included to improve the appearance of the finished product. However, the finished appearance is not entirely satisfactory and it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved method in which the final appearance is more acceptable.
Surprisingly, it has been found in accordance with the present invention that an improved product is obtained by reducing the variegated coloured sheet (made for example by the technique described above) to particles which are then recombined under heat and pressure for example using a rotary press.
An example of a method in accordance with the invention will now be described.
In the example highlighting chips are combined with a base sheet which is then size reduced to form chips or granules which are combined into a coherent flooring sheet. The highlighting chips are formulated and compounded utilising existing PVC compound technology. The PVC chips may be filled e.g. with calcium carbonate in an amount of 5 to 70% by weight. If filled the chips are relatively opaque and if unfilled they are translucent. They may be pigmented or unpigmented and may be of any size up to lOmm.
The base sheet is produced by combining base colours with the highlighting chips. For example, two base compounds A and B may be produced to the same basic recipe but preferably of different colours. The base compounds may be combined in equal proportions but if desired they may be mixed in different ratios of up to 3 to 1.
The highlighting chips are then added to the base sheet. As many as four different types or colours of highlighting chips may be used. The highlighting chips may account for as much as 10 to 25% of the total weight of the product. A typical combination would be : Base Compound A 40% Base Compound B 40% Highlight Chip C 10% Highlight Chip D 10% The base compounds and lightlight chips are combined with each other when hot (1300C to 1800C).
The method of combining the ingredients introduces a degree of intermixing. The resulting mixture is then converted into a sheet having a thickness between 0.9mm and 3.Omm using a calendar with extruder or similar equipment.
The base sheet so produced is cooled and converted into granules using standard equipment for size reduction e.g. a granulator. The granules can be in different size ranges e.g. O to 3mm, 2 to Smm, 4 to 8mm. In each case a different decorative effect is achieved.
Finally, the granules of a particular size range are combined into a coherent flooring sheet by sprinkling onto a support web into a layer which is heated and then subjected to pressure in a rotary press in which the particles well together to form a coherent sheet.
