Abstract

A method of decorating a transparent substrate comprises the steps of: 1. applying to a first surface of the substrate sequentially in any desired order one or more droplets of water or aqueous liquid and a paint medium which is immiscible with water so that the paint medium surrounds the or each droplet; 2. applying to the interior of the or a predetermined one of the droplets at a point adjacent its periphery an aliquot of paint medium immiscible with water, and allowing or encouraging said aliquot to spread around the interior periphery of the droplet; 3. allowing the paint medium or media to dry and the water or aqueous liquid to evaporate; and 4. spraying or otherwise applying over said entire first surface a layer of paint medium compatible with said paint media used in steps 1 and 2. d

Description

METHOD OF DECORATING GLASS The present invention relates to a method of decorating glass. More particularly, but not exclusively, it relates to a method of decorating glass by painting on one surface a predetermined or random pattern of colours to be viewed from the other surface.
The term glass is used herein to cover both glass and any other transparent or substantially transparent substrate such as plastics material.
The glass material may be used for glass tabletops, wall coverings or ornaments, shower partitions and, in the case where the substrate is a flexible transparent plastics material, they may even find use as articles of clothing or tablecloths and the like.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of decorating glass (or other transparent substrate) comprising the steps of: 1. applying to a first surface of the substrate sequentially in any desired order one or more droplets 9f water or aqueous liquid and a paint medium which is immiscible with water so that the paint medium surrounds the or each droplet; 2. applying to the interior of the or a predetermined one of the droplets at a point adjacent its periphery an aliquot of paint medium immiscible with water, and allowing or encouraging said aliquot to spread around the interior periphery of the droplet; 3. allowing the paint medium or media to dry and the water or aqueous liquid to evaporate; and 4. spraying or otherwise applying over said entire first surface a layer of paint medium compatible with said paint media used in steps 1 and 2.
In one embodiment step 1 is carried out by first spraying or otherwise applying the droplets of water, and then applying the paint medium around them.
In another embodiment, step 1 is carried out by first applying the paint medium to the surface and then applying the droplets of water to displace the paint medium from some areas.
Preferably the method comprises the additional step of applying a powder of a metallic material, or a metallic effect material, to the substrate after carrying out step 2 or step 3.
The method may include a preliminary step of degreasing the first surface by application thereto of methylated spirits or some other suitable cleaning agent.
The paint medium used in steps 1,2, and 4 may advantageously be an enamel paint.
In steps 1 and 2 the paint media are most advantageously thinned using an appropriate thinning agent.
The colours of the paint media used in steps 1 and 2 may be the same or different.
In step 4, the paint medium is preferably one adapted to give a gloss finish.
In step 3, the substrate may be allowed to dry for a period of between 24 and 50 hours.
Embodiments of the invention will now be more particularly described by way of example.
In order to carry out the method, a sheet of glass of the desired size is taken and one surface degreased by swabbing with methylated spirits. This degrease surface is laid uppermost in a more or less horizontal disposition. If the substrate is a flexible transparent material, it should be stretched to be planar during the process of the invention.
Water droplets are then applied over the surface, preferably by means of a spray. If it is desired to manipulate the droplets, it should be done at this stage.
Some droplets may be coalesced to form larger ones, or to form elongate droplet shapes. Any undesired droplets can be either mopped up, or ignored during some of the later stages.
Using a fine paint brush and thinned enamel paint, each droplet, or each desired droplet, is ringed with colour around its outer periphery.
A second colour, equally thinned, is then applied as a globule inside each droplet. If it is pushed toward the periphery of the droplet, it will spread around the inner periphery, thereby giving a pair of concentric circles or shapes separated by the surface tension of the water.
The colours chosen may be the same or different for each droplet, and may vary between droplets.
Particles of metallic material, or metal effect material are now sprinkled over the surface to give a desired effect. Gold and silver coloured powders are preferred, although other colours may be used if so desired.
The glass is then allowed to dry for a period between 24 and 50 hours, preferably for some period between 30 and 48 hours. In this time, the paint hardens and the water droplets evaporate.
Once the period has elapsed, and the water droplets are gone, the entire surface is sprayed in enamel gloss paint. This forms a seal over the entire surface, although again, additional sealing layers may be applied if so desired. They will not be seen once the glass is in place.
Once the gloss has hardened, the glass can be inverted and viewed. From the opposite side, the gloss layer appears as a background with coloured rings and sparkling powder viewable against it. It will thus form a decorative panel, from which the decoration cannot be removed from the side facing the viewer or user.
In an alternative embodiment, the degreased horizontal substrate is first sprayed with suitably thinned paint and then water droplets are applied to displace the paint from some areas. Again, as in the first embodiment, a second colour, suitably thinned, is applied as a globule inside each droplet. The method then proceeds as in the case of the first embodiment.
If so desired, part or parts of the substrate may be masked, at least during the early stages of the method.
This enables different parts of the substrate to be decorated differently.
