Description
A VALVE ASSEMBLY
This invention relates to a valve assembly comprising a valve body with a plurality of screwthreaded studs or bolts projecting from one end face thereof and spaced around a pitch circle concentric with a bore emerging at that end face; an end adaptor having a spigot sealingly engaged in the bore, a cylindrical union coaxial with the spigot and connected thereto by a flange having holes through which the studs or bolts extend, and a coaxial bore through the spigot, flange and union; and nuts screwed on to the studs or bolts to secure the end adaptor to the valve body.
The coaxial bore through the spigot, flange and union may emerge in a screwthreaded counter-bore in the union, or the coaxial bore may emerge through a bolting flange for connection to a similar bolting flange on an end of a pipeline.
The object of the invention is to provide a compact valve assembly of the type initially described above.
According to the present invention, each nut has a cylindrical body with a screwthreaded blind bore extending from one end and a turning-tool engageable-portion within or extending from the other end, the said portion of each nut lying wholly within the outer diameter of the body of the nut.
Therefore, the diameter of the pitch circle of the studs and bolts needs to be greater than the outer diameter of the union by little or no more than the outer diameter of the nut bodies. Thus, the flange can have an outer diameter
exceeding the outer diameter of the union by little or no more than twice the outer diameter of the nut bodies, or a
square flange (with four stud or bolt holes) can have a diagonal dimension (between radiussed corners) exceeding the outer diameter of the union by only a little more than twice the outer diameter of the nut bodies. Very compact valve assemblies can therefore be achieved with the features of the present invention, given a minimum outer diameter for the union as determined by a specified diameter for the bore therethrough.
The turning-tool engageable-portion of each nut may be a hexagonal head that has a dimension across diametrically opposed corners less than the outer diameter of the nut body, for engagement by a standard spanner or socket wrench.
Alternatively, the said portion could be a square head.
Again, it could be a cruciform recess or a recess having a hexagonal, square or other polygonal cross-section.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a valve assembly in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section taken from the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary and truncated section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 and showing an alternative form of nut.
In Figure 1 a valve assembly comprises a valve body 1~ with four screwthreaded bolts 11 (see Figure 3) projecting from one end face 12 thereof and spaced around a pitch circle concentric with a bore 13 emerging at that end face; an end adaptor 14 having a spigot 15 sealingly engaged in the bore 13, a cylindrical union 16 coaxial with the spigot 15 and connected thereto by a flange 17 having holes 18 through which the bolts 11 extend and a coaxial bore 19 through the spigot 15, flange 17 and union 16; and nuts 20 screwed on to the bolts 11 to secure the end adaptor 14 to the valve body 18.
The coaxial bore 19 emerges through a bolting flange 21 for connection to a similar bolting flange (not shown) on an end of a pipeline (also not shown).
It will be seen that the opposite end face 22 of the valve body 18 is abutted by the flange 27 of another end adaptor 24 having a spigot 25 sealingly engaged in a bore 23 emerging at that end face and a union 26 with a bore 29 emerging through a bolting flange 30 for connection to a similar bolting flange (not shown) on an end of another pipeline (also not shown). The flange 27 of the end adaptor 24 is abutted by the heads 31 of the bolts 11, and the heads 31 have hexagonal recesses 32 for engagement by any suitable tool.
In accordance with the present invention, each nut 21i has a cylindrical body with a screwthreaded blind bore 33 extending from one end, and a turning-tool engageable-portion 34 within the other end and consisting of a hexagonal recess (see also Figure 2) for engagement by any suitable tool.
Thus, the square flange 17 of the end adaptor 14 can have a diagonal dimension (between raduissed corners 35) exceeding the outer diameter of the union 16 by only a little more than twice the outer diameter of the nut bodies 2~, and consequently the valve assembly can be very compact.
It will be seen in Figure 1 that the valve body le has a branch 36 having an end face 37 abutted by a flange 38 of an end adaptor 39, with screwthreaded studs 40 (only one shown in Figure 4) extending from the end face 37 through holes 41 in the flange 38, the end adaptor 39 being secured to the branch 36 by nuts 20X screwed on to the studs 40.
In accordance with the present invention, each nut 20X has a cylindrical body with a screwthreaded blind bore 33X extending from one end, and a turning-tool engageableportion 34X extending from the other end and consisting of a hexagonal head, having a dimension across diametrically opposed corners less than the outer diameter of the nut body, for engagement by a standard spanner or socket wrench.
