Description

BABY SEAT THIS INVENTION relates to a baby seat or recliner.
Baby seats or recliners, in which a young baby can be lain in a reclining position but held safely against escape are well known. Typically, such baby seats are fabricated of tubular metal. usually with some form of spring connection between a floor-standing base and an angled portion supporting a hammock-like expanse of fabric for holding the baby, and further comprising suitable straps for retention.
The present invention sets out to provide a baby seat of different design. more stable configuration. and a shape selected such that the baby cannot slide downwards.
In one aspect the invention consists in a baby seat or recliner having a main body-support portion of resilient material and a forwardly extending padded or quilted leg-support portion fixed at the lower edge of the body-support portion: whereby the baby can be laid in a reclining position along the surface of the body-support portion and be restrained at least partly, by the leg-support portion, from sliding forward.
Preferably. the body support portion is generally wedge-shaped; and the leg-support portion is preferably a forwardly-extending flange, or like member, of padded or quilted material.
If necessary. the flange and adjacent portions of the wedge-shaped body can be especially shaped to assist this retaining function.
Preferably upstanding soft side walls extend along the sides of the wedge to assist in retaining the baby from wriggling out. In practice, the wedge will normally be provided with straps, fastened for example at the back of the wedge and releasable or engageable at the front, in front of the baby. It is preferred if a vertical strap extending upwards from the front of the wedge-shaped body is also included with such structure.
The preferred baby seat in accordance with the invention, with upstanding side walls and forwardly extending quilted or padded portion, and with suitably configured wide straps, can be further ornamented with lugs or tabs at the top edge of the wedge and resembling eyes. If this is effected the overall seat will resemble a large simulacrum of a frog, holding the baby in its embrace by straps of a type representing its front legs.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of a baby seat in accordance with the present invention.
The baby seat consists predominantly of a wedge-shaped main body 1, which is usually although not essentially shaped to be wider at the front, lower, edge than at the top or rear edge. Body 1 is composed of foam rubber covered in a suitable fabric. At the bottom edge of the wedge the fabric is continued as a fan-like subdivided expanse 2, which is somewhat padded or quilted. The face 3 of the main body 1 is shown as a plane face, but can if necessary be somewhat hollowed or contoured. To either side of the main body are two padded and fabric-covered portions 5 and 6, merging with the edges of the fan-like expanse 2, and rising as low walls to either side of the wedge.
At the back of the wedge-shaped body are fixed strap portions 7 and 7a. These are again formed of fabric material and are usually somewhat quilted or padded.
These portion 7 and 7a can be fixed together at complementary fitments 8 and 8a, which also accommodate the upper end 9a of a vertical strap 9 originating from the midpoint of the base of the wedge-shaped body 1. At the upper end of the body 1 are located two upstanding lugs 10 each suitably ornamented.
The dimensions and configuration of the chair are chosen functionally so that, at the base 2aof the wedge-shaped body 1, there is a depression, or less thick padding, preventing the baby from sliding uncomfortably forward when laid upon the sloping surface 3. Of course, strap 9 physically prevents the baby from sliding outwards altogether. The dimensions and structure are such moreover that when the straps 7 and 7a are fastened to the strap 9 space adequate to hold the baby firmly but comfortably is left between the straps and the body.
The function of the seat is basically discharged by the combination of the wedge-shaped solid body and the forwardly projecting quilted flange, together with the other preferred features noted above. However, decoratively (and as can be seen from the Figure) the seat can be constructed to resemble a frog, lugs 10 being the eyes, the straps 7, 7a being the front legs, and the side walls 5, 6 together with the fan-shaped flange 2 generally resembling the back legs and webbed feet. The decorative appearance, therefore, when the baby seat is in use, is that of a large protective bull-frog holding the baby in its arms.
