Description
k.
1 DRYING DRUM WITH ELECTROMAGNETIC HEAT GENERATING UNIT This invention relates to a drying drum for drying a paper material, a textile material or the like which passes thereover, and particularly to a drying drum which incorporates an electromagnetic heat 5 generating unit.
Conventional drying drums -used in paper industries, textile industries, etc., are generally heated by injecting steam into the interior of the drum.
These drying drums consume high energy and the maintenance cost thereof is relatively high.
Improvements have been made in such drying drums by using electromagnetic heat generating devices.
However, the electromagnetic heat generating devices used heretofore are generally of the type including an electromagnetic coil and a magnetic inductive requires a metal block which adds weight and complicated arrangement.
An object of the invention is to provide a drying drum of the type described above with a simolified electromagnetic heat generating unit which reduces energy consumption and does not require hligh maIntenance cost.
Another object of the invention is to drying drum of t-he type described above with an electromacnettic heat generating unit which c-=n a a 2 constructed with a reduced weight.
According to the present invent'ion, a drying drum which includes a rotary drum carried by a stationary hollow shaft is provided with an electromagnetic coil means mounted on an insulating coil support wich is provided around the hollow shaft. The electromagnetic coil means surrounds the hollow shaft adjacent to the inner peripheral surface of the drum to produce magnetic flux so as to generate eddy current,-and has two terminal portio'ns extending outwardly of the drum by being passed through the hollow shaft.
In one embodiment of the invention, the coil support includes two insulating plate members which are substantially perpendicular to the hollow mounted thereon at two axially spaced apart.the plate members having openings therein to shaft and positions, permit the coil means to thread therethrough. The coil means forms a plurality of axial lines adjacent to the inner peripheral surface by threading through the openings and runhing alternatively from one of the plate members to the other.
In another embodiment of the invention, the coil support includes a plurality of insulating plates which extend axially and radially from the hollow shaft and have annularly aligned edge notches to position the coil means. The coil means includes a plurality of turns of coils around the radial plates adjacent to t the It 3 inner peripheral surface, the coils being received in the aligned edge notches of the radial plates.
The present exemplary preferred embodiments will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of an embodiment of the drying drum according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the embodiment of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a sectional view of another embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of the embodiment of Figure 3.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a preferred embodiment of a drying drum of the present invention is shown. including a drum member 20 which is conventional and comprised of a cylindrical wall 21 and two end covers 22 and 23 secured to the cylindrical wall 21 by means of fasteners 24. Both end covers 22 and 23 have a hollow construction. In the cover 22 are provided a hole 25 to permit an access to the interior of the drum 20 for maintenance and repair. and a central projection 27 to be in connection with an external support (not shown). A hollow shaft 30 is journalled in a bearing assembly 26 A 4 with one of the ends thereof and extends outwardly through a hole of another end cover. The drum 20 is rotatable relative to the shaft 30.
Two insulating circular plates 40 and 50 which are substantially perpendicular to the shaft 30 are mounted on the shaft 30 at two axially spaced apart positions. Holes 401 and 501 are provided in the plates 40 and 50 at intervals.
A conductive coil 60 is threaded through the holes 401 and 501 and formed into a plurality of axial lines adjacent to the inner peripheral surface of the drum by running from one of the plates 40 and 50 to the other alternately. The two terminal portions 601 and 602 of the coil means extend outwardly of the drum by being passed through the hollow shaft 30 and are connected to an external electric supply device (not shown).
In operation. the drum 20 is rotated by the paper or textile sheet which passes thereover. The shaft 30 does not rotate along with the drum 20. When a high frequency alternating current is supplied to the coil means 60. the coil 60 produces magnetic flux adjacent to the inner surface of the drum. thereby generating eddy current which heats the drum.
Figures 3 and 4 show another embodiment of the drying drum of the present invention in which a drum 20 is carried by a hollow shaft 30 which has two ends journalled in two bearing assemblies 10. Each of the :i 4 bearing assemblies 10 is integrally connected with four annularly radially extending rod members 111 provided with threaded ends 112 which engage respectively with screws 113 secured to the inner side of the wall of the drum 20. thereby mounting the drum 20 rotatably on the shaft 30. Four axially and radially extending plates 302 are connected to the hollow shaft 30 by means of clamps 301. Annularly aligned notches 303 are provided in the distal edges of the radial plates 302.
A coil 80 is turned around the radial plates 302 along the notches 303 to form a plurality of turns of coil. The coil 80 is extended into the interior of the hollow shaft 30 and then drawn out by being passed through the hollow shaft 30. The operation of the drying drum of this embodiment is similar to that of the previous embodiment.
With the invention thus explained. it is apparent that various modificiations and variations can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. It is intended that the invention be limited as indicated only in the appended claims.
