Abstract
A measuring tool has front and rear plates (4), (6) providing two measuring points, (a), (b), which are drawn together or apart as necessary to allow the measurement of part tiles in corners of walls or floors. The tool can be locked into position by means of the locking mechanism 1. With tiles to be cut placed upon a stabilising board the tool is placed on the tiles and pushed against a ridge on the board to stabilise them. The tool is held firmly down on tiles which are scored along the measuring edge (b) on front plate. Attachment 5 can be added to enable to measure difficult places such as behind pipes. When the above has been carried out the tool can be removed, scored tiles can be placed over the said ridge and broken. <IMAGE>
Description
TIMESAVER TILE MEASURER
This invention relates to the easy measuring and easy outting of wall and floor tiles which are otherwise difficult and tire consuming to measure. This invention also cuts dot, the amount of skill required to do the above mentioned and is easy to use thus enabling 8anost anyone to use it.
This tool as far as I know has no background.
According to the present invention, there is provided a measuring tool comprising of two shaped plates opposite each other with a means of drawing together by two rods each hinged at the front ends to allow angled movement of the front plate of tool. The rods are moved through the rear plate by means of sleeves on rear plate to stabalise rods as they are moved. The sleeves have a locking mechanism on each one to secure the rods a J:ie position when desired measurement is acquired. The tool having :-e versatility of being able to be taken apart to allow easy storage and compactability.
In respect of the above tool ther? is iilso at ttachments which may be used to get measurements from hard to get at places, for example behind pies. Do do this the attachz.ent will .epllce the front plate of the tool.
In respect of the above tool there will also be a stabilising board which consists of a flat board on top of which is a ridge of the appropriate measurement along the length and breadth so to assist in the stabalising and breaking of the tiles.
A specific embodimet of the tool will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drings in which:-
Figure 1 shows in prospective the tool with an attachment for extending the measuring diotance.
Figure 2 shows a side elevation of the tool and attachment with the measuring points being (a) and (b) or (a) and (c) or (d) and (b) or (d) and (c) which ever is applicable (Depending upon whether using attachment or not).
Figure 3 illustrates how the tool is placed against the tiles on the wall or floor to measure the gap for part tile.
Figure 4 shows how the attachment is used to measure difficult places such as behind pipes.
Figure 5 illustrates how the tiles are placed upon the stabilising board and the placement of tool is ready for the scoring of the tiles.
Figure 6 illustrates how the tiles are broken over the ridge on the stabilising board.
Referring to the drawirgs the tool cor. rises of a rear plate, 6, a front plate, 4, two guide rods, 2, which slide through glide sleeves 9, which stabilise the roads, 2. ot front end of the rods, 2, a hinge is affixed to allow the front plate, 4, to be set at an angle for the measurement of parallel walls. The locking mechanisms, 1, on the guide sleeves, 9, are used to affix rods, 2, in acquired position so that tool retains desired measurement until used.
In order to obtain desired measurement, Figure 3, the tool is placed with measuring point (a) against ed-e of tiles on wall or floor and extended so that measuring point (b) meets corner, at which time the looking mechanism, 1, is applied to affix rods, 2, as so to hold the measurement obtained. ;measuring behind such obstacles as pipes, Figure 4. The attachment 5 c;n be added at which the measuring points as above will now be point (a) and point (c).
Then the above has been obtained, the tiles to be cut are placed upon the stabilising board, 7, Figure 5 and pushed against the ridge, 8, to stop any movement of the tiles. The thickness between point (a) and point (d) -Figure 5 and Figure 2 is the same as the gap required between tiles for grouting thus when point (d) is placed against edge of tiles to be cut this will automatically remove the thickness as above from the tiles being measured for cutting. At this point the tool is held firmly on tiles while the appropriate tool, for example, a tile scoring knife is used to score along measuring point (b) or (c) which ever is applicable (depending whether using attachment 5 or not).
The above being executed, the tool is then removed and the scored tiles are placed on the ridge, 8, Figure 6, with the scored line directly over the ridge, 8, and with even pressure either side a straight break is obtained.
Claims (1)
- CLABIS1) A measuring tool comprising of a shaped front and rear plate with two rods of which are attached to the front plate by a hinge on each rod, reason for the hinges is to allow angled movement of the front plate. The rods also slide through the back plate by means of sleeves which are attached to the back plate so as to stabalise the rods of which are locked into position by means of an appropriate locking mechanism.2) A measuring tool as claimed in claim 1 whereon the back part of the measuring point on back plate is placed against edge of tiles on wall or floor and the front plate is drawl forward to meet against corner to produce the required measurement of the part tile to fit in gap, at which point the locking mechanism on the sleeves are operated to affix tool on acquired measurement.3) A measuring tool as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 whereon an attachment is provided which will affix to the front of the tool to enable the measurement of difficult places such as behind pipes 4) A measuring tool as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3 whereas the tool if' taken and placed with the front part of the measuring point of the back plate against the tiles to be scored and broken thus reducing the measurement by the thickness between the back part of the measuring point of the back plate and the front part of the measuring point of the back plate which is the correct width left between the tiles or. wall or floor for grouting.5) A measuring tool as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3 or claim 4 whereas the tool is held dozen firmly while the tiles are scored.6) A measuring tool as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3 or claim 4 or claim 5 whereon the tiles to be scored are placed on the stabali ing board which has a ridge set in to the appropriate measurement Slong the length and breadth so as to push the tiles against to stabalise them. 57hen tiles have been scored they are placed over said ridge to be broken.7) A measuring tool substantially as described herein with reference tc figures 1 - 6 of the accompanying drawings.
