Abstract

An ice-breaking vessel equipped with lasers the beams of which are directed on to the ice and may be swept from side to side, oscillated to and fro or moved in an orbital manner, to melt the ice. The beams may be directed in a defocussed state at iced areas of the vessel itself.

Description

IMPROVED ICE BREAKING VESSEL FOR COblMRCIAL SEAWAYS AND CANALS This invention relates to ice-breaking vessels.
Hitherto conventional ice breakers have operated on the ice by applying mechanical effort.
According to the present invention, an ice-breaking vessel is equipped with lasers to operate on the ice by laser beam energy.
Arrangements according to the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing, which shows an ice-breaking vessel in plan.
The system shown comprises one or several solid state or gas lasers appropriately mounted on either a purpose built ice breaking vessel 11 or an adapted vessel such as a freighter, fishing vessel or canal barge. The lasers may be powered by dedicated generators or by the vessel's own auxiliary generating sets. The laser beams 12 can be aimed either ahead or astern or to the sides of the vessel either directly from the laser head or via a series of optical paths.
The laser beams may be fitted with automatically focussing lenses, or may operate in the unfocussed state. The beams can be aimed at the ice and programmed to sweep from side to side, as indicated at 13, oscillate to and fro, or in an orbital motion to melt the ice.
In extreme vessel superstructure icing conditions, the beams in the defocussed state and spread at low power can be manually directed at severely iced areas to melt the ice very rapidly without damage to the surface of the structure.
Any vessel that uses a channel that ices up, such as the St. Lawrence-, could be fitted relatively cheaply so that it could navigate the ice bound channel. without assistance and help to keep the waterway open.

Claims (4)

CLAIMS:
1. An ice-breaking vessel equipped with lasers to operate on the ice by laser beam energy.
2. A vessel according to Claim 1, wherein the laser beam or beams are arranged to sweep from side to side, or oscillate to and fro, or travel in an orbital motion.
3. A vessel according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the laser beam or beams are arranged to be directed in a defocussed state, at iced areas of the vessel itself.
4. An ice-breaking vessel substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
