Abstract

A bag for use by an angler, for holding fishing or camping gear, or an umbrella, comprises releasable buckles 30, 32 for securing the bag 10 to the frame of a ruck sack. Buckle halves 30, 32 on straps 24, 22 cooperate with the other halves which are on straps on the rucksack frame. The bag also includes a pouch 20 and at least one looped strap 26 for holding fishing rods, and a flotation compartment. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENT8 IN BAGS The present invention relates to a bag and is particularly concerned with a bag intended for use by anglers.
Anglers often need to carry large amounts of equipment when setting out. Apart from the items used for angling, such as rods, reels, a keep net, bait etc., camping gear is also carried to permit the angler to spend extended lengths of time in comfort on, say, a river bank. Such camping equipment is both bulky and heavy and may include a collapsible tent or umbrella, and a camping chair or bed.
In addition, food and drink may need to be carried. To add to an angler's difficulties, all this equipment often needs to be carried over long distances and rough terrain.
To permit this amount of equipment to be carried, an angler may carry on his back a ruck sack to hold bulky items such as a sleeping bag and a ground sheet. A holdall is carried for a flask, sandwiches, bait, tools and so on while a tall thin bag is used to hold such items as fishing rods, a keep net, umbrella, tent poles and bank sticks which will fit neither in a holdall nor a ruck sack.
According to the present invention, there is provided a bag for use by an angler, which comprises releasable fastening means for securing the bag to the frame of a ruck sack.
Preferably the bag is a long thin bag having an open compartment for receiving elongate items such as tent poles, bank sticks or an umbrella.
The releasable fastening means on the bag may conveniently include two buckles spaced along the length of the bag and intended to be fitted to straps secured to the frame of the ruck sack whereby, in use, the bag is carried vertically above the waist line of the wearer of the ruck sack. It is preferred that the fastening means used to secure the bag to the frame of the ruck sack should be short to hold the bag tight against the ruck sack.
Advantageously, the bag further includes straps for strapping onto the outside of the bag fishing rods. If desired, each fishing rod may be wrapped in its own individual sheath prior to being strapped onto the bag.
By enabling the bag carrying the fishing rods, tent poles and the like items to be secured to the frame of the ruck sack, the invention enables one the user's hands to be freed and thus eases the carrying task considerably.
The bag may be sold in combination with a ruck sack, or at least a ruck sack frame. Alternatively, if the angler already possesses a ruck sack frame then the latter may be adapted to receive the buckles or other fastening means fitted to the bag.
The bag may include additional compartments, either open or having zip fasteners.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a bag in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, and Figure 2 is a rear view of the bag shown in Figure 1.
The bag 10 in the drawings is an elongate bag with a central compartment 12. On the outside of the central compartment 12 are two elongate pockets 14 and 16, the latter carrying a further zip fastened compartment 18.
On the rear side of the bag, shown in Figure 2, there is arranged at the bottom of the bag a pouch 20 and three straps 22, 24 and 26, all of which are sewn onto the bag.
The strap 26 which is looped and buckles on to itself, serves to hold fishing rods on the bag. The base of the fishing rods is placed in the pouch 20 and the strap 26 is buckled after having been passed around the rods above the level of the reels. In practice, two or more such straps 26 are provided but only one is shown in the drawing in the interest of clarity.
The other two straps 22 and 24 each carry only one half 32, 30 of a quick release buckle the other half of which is mounted by means of a strap on the frame of a ruck sack or back pack. The frame is generally conventional and is not illustrated in the drawings. The straps on the frame are arranged on frame members near the back of the user so that the bag 10, when fitted to the frame is carried vertically, to one side of the frame (which may be either the left of the right side) and rests on the user's side.
The bag can be used to hold a variety of cumbersome elongate items, such as an umbrella, a keep net, and tent poles which are particularly awkward to carry by hand but which are not heavy and do not upset the user's balance if properly secured to the frame of a ruck sack. Items which do not fit in one of the closed pockets can be placed in the open central compartment, while the pouch 20 and straps 26 permit a large number of rods to be secured to the outside of the bag 10.
If desired, individual sheaths may be provided with the bag to protect the fishing rods while the equipment is in storage.
In order to prevent from sinking, in the event of its falling into the water, it is possible to include a sealed flotation compartment in the bag but this is not shown.
The buckles on the strap 26 are of any convenient type but for the straps 22 and 24 it is preferred to use quick release buckles. These are well known and one variety comprises a plastics body with two lateral deflectable barbs which can be pressed in manually during assembly and separation of the buckle halves but which spring out under their own resilience and securely grip the other half of the buckle when released. Alternative constructions may be used, for example the variety used in children's seat restraints.
