Description
"Door Hanging Aids"
This invention relates to door hanging aids, and is concerned with facilitating the hanging of a door within a door frame.
It is conventional practice, when hanging a door from a door frame by means of hinges, to position the door within the frame at the height at which it is to be hung in the closed position so as to enable the intended positions of the hinges to be marked on the door and the frame. The door is then removed from the frame and rebates are cut in the door and the frame to accommodate the hinges. The hinges are then fixed to the door, and the door is held in a position so as to align the hinges with the hinge rebates in the frame. Finally the hinges are secured to the frame in order to complete hanging of the door.
During both marking of the hinge positions, and securing of the hinges to the frame, it is important that the door is supported at the correct height if the door is to be hung correctly. Generally the door is simply raised to the required height by supporting the door on a screwdriver or some other sort of wedging tool. However, this is unsatisfactory largely because of the difficulty of adjusting the height at which the door is supported in view of the substantial weight of the door.
It is an object of the invention to provide a door hanging aid which can be used in a straightforward manner to adjust the height of the door within the frame.
According to the present invention there is provided a door hanging aid comprising a base engageable with the ground, and a lever which is mounted intermediate its end on the base so as to be pivotable about a horizontal axis and which has one end adapted to engage beneath a door so that, by the application of pressure to the other end of the lever, the door may be lifted to the height at which it is to be hung from a door frame.
Preferably said one end of the lever is cranked or stepped to enable it to engage beneath the door. Most preferably said one end of the lever includes a plurality of steps at different heights for supporting the door at different heights.
The lever is also preferably mounted on the base so as to be pivotable about a vertical axis. This enables the door to be swung horizontally into the correct position for marking or fixing whilst being supported by the lever.
Conveniently said other end of the lever is formed with a foot pedal which may be attached to the remainder of the lever so as to be capable of pivoting about a horizontal axis. The pedal may have a grooved upper surface to assist grip.
In a development of the invention the door hanging aid has a further lever which is similarly mounted interiediate its ends on the base so as to be pivotable about said horizontal axis and which has one end similarly adapted to engage beneath the door, and coupling means connecting together the two levers so as to provide for simultaneous pivoting of the two levers about said horizontal axis to lift the door to the required height.
The coupling means may be a pedal bar which is connected at each end to said other end of a respective one of the levers.
The other lever is also preferably mounted on the base so as to be pivotable about a vertical axis, the pedal bar being pivotally connected about a vertical pivot axis at each end to the associated lever.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is an exploded view of the device of
Figure 1; Figures 3 and 4 show the device of Figure 1 in use for hanging a door;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of the invention; and
Figure 6 is an exploded view of the device of
Figure 5.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 the single lever door banging aid I illustrated therein comprises a lever 10 mounted on a base 11 by a pivot pin 12 so as to be pivotable about a horizontal axis. The pivot pin 12 extends through apertures 13 in the upstanding arms of a pivot bracket 14 and through a bore 15 in the lever 10 positioned between the arms. Furthermore the pivot pin 12 is held within the apertures 14 and the bore 15 by means of a washer 16 and a spring clip 17. The pivot bracket 14 is secured to the base by a bolt 18 which extends through a Nylon bush 19 which fits within an aperture 20 in the pivot bracket 14 and which has an annular flange spacing the pivot bracket 14 from the base 11.The bolt 18 is screwed into a screwthreaded bore 21 in the base 11, and the bush 19 permits pivoting of the pivot bracket 14, and hence of the lever 10, about a vertical axis relative to the base 11.
The lever 10 is stepped at one end and comprises five steps 22 of different heights. The difference in height between each pair of adjacent steps 22 is the same, although the difference in height between the top step and the top of the lever 10 is greater than this amount, and the difference in height between the bottom step and the bottom of the lever 10 is less than this amount. The other end of the lever 10 is formed with a foot pedal 23 provided with a grooved rubber mat 24 on its upper surface and pivoted about a horizontal axis on the remainder of the lever 10 by a pivot pin 25 extending through apertures 26 and 27 in the lever 10 and the pedal 23 and secured therein by a washer 28 and spring clip 29.
In use of the door hanging aid 1 for positioning a door 30 within a frame 31 to enable the intended positions of hinges 32 to be marked on the door 30 and frame 31, the stepped end of the lever 10 is placed under the bottom edge of the door 30 with the door positioned within the frame 31, as shown in Figure 3. The pedal 23 of the door hanging aid 1 is then depressed in the direction of the arrow 33 by means of a foot 34 in order to lift the door 30 in the direction of the arrow 35. The pedal may then be pivoted horizontally as shown by the arrows 36 in order to swing the door 30 in the direction of the arrows 37 in order to enable the door 30 to be correctly aligned within the frame 31.When the door 30 is correctly aligned within the frame 31 and positioned at the correct height, the intended positions for the hinges 32 may be marked on the door 30 and the frame 31 by means of a pencil 38.
After the hinge rebates have been cut in the door 30 and the frame 31 and the hinges 32 have been fixed to the door 30, the door 30 is then placed in the open position with the hinges 32 adjacent the frame 31, as shown in the partial view of Figure 4. As before the stepped end of the lever 10 is placed under the bottom edge of the door 30 and the pedal is moved in the direction of the arrows 33 and 36 in order to move the door in the direction of the arrows 35 and 37. The door 30 can thereby be balanced and the hinges 32 aligned with the hinge rebates in the frame 31 prior to securing of the hinges 32 to the frame 31 by means of screws 39 and a screwdriver 40.
Figures 5 and 6 show a twin lever door hanging aid 1' which is of broadly similar construction to the single lever door hanging aid 1 but which includes two stepped levers 50 and 51 mounted on a common base 52 having two upstanding portions 53 joined by a strengthening rib 54. Since the manner in which each of the levers 50 and 51 is mounted on the base 52 is similar to the mounting of the lever 10 on the base 11, associated parts are denoted in Figures 5 and 6 by the same reference numerals primed as are used to denote like parts in
Figures 1 and 2, and these parts will not be described further.
Furthermore the two levers 50 and 51 are coupled together by a pedal bar 55 provided with a grooved rubber mat 56 so as to provide for simultaneous pivoting of the two levers 50 and 51 about their pivot axes. The pedal bar 55 is pivotally connected about a vertical pivot axis at each end to the lever 50 or 51 by means of a respective pivot pin 57 which extends through apertures 58 and 59 in the lever 50 or 51 and the pedal bar 55 and is retained therein by a washer 60 and a spring clip 61.
The twin lever door hanging aid is used in precisely the same manner as the single lever door hanging aid to effect the required marking and fixing operations when hanging a door, and these operations need not therefore be further described.
Various modifications of the above-described door hanging aids are possible within the scope of the invention. For example the rubber mats 24 and 56 could be dispensed with and the upper surfaces of the pedal 23 and pedal bar 55 could simply be grooved. Furthermore the spacer bushes 19 and 19' could be moulded into the base 11 or 52.
