Abstract
A jig for joining and forming plastics sections 23, 24 for use in model making comprises a pair of end rollers 10, 11 mounted on a shaft 12 and between which can be secured discs or plates 20, 21 of different dimensions whereby the discs or plates 20, 21 together with the end rollers 10, 11 define a peripheral groove 22 in the configuration of the section to be formed. The discs or plates 20, 21 are washers (e.g. of aluminium) adapted to be removably slid onto the shaft or spindle, the washers being circular and of varying diameters, whereby the end rollers 10, 11 and washers 20, 21 can be assembled to define a circumferential groove 22 of the required sectional configuration. The roller 10 may be integral with shaft 12 and roller 11 is secured thereto either by a screw 14 engaging an axial slot 13 in the shaft or by a screw acting on the shaft 12 via an elastomeric (rubber) or plastics plug. <IMAGE>
Description
A JIG
This invention relates to a jig for forming plastics sections used in model making. In model making strips of plastics material are used and it is difficult to form sections of very small dimensions, say 40 thousandths of an inch or even less.
The plastics strips are usually bonded or adhered together using an appropriate solvent.
The sections may be angle sections, T-sections, channel sections or H-sections.
The present invention is concerned in particular with providing a jig for assembling and forming plastics sections which are of very small dimensions although the use of the jig is not restricted to small dimensioned sections.
According to the present invention there is provided a jig for forming plastics sections for use in model making, the jig comprising a pair of end support members between which can be secured discs or plates of different dimensions whereby the discs or plates together with the end support members define a peripheral groove in the configuration of the section to be formed.
Preferably, the end support members are rollers, one of which comprises a shaft or spindle onto which the other can be secured.
Alternatively the rollers are both mountable on and demountable from the shaft or spindle and are securable thereon.
Preferably also the discs or plates are washers adapted to be removably slid onto the shaft or spindle, and the washers being circular and of varying diameters, whereby the end rollers and washers can be assembled to define a circumferential groove of the required sectional configuration.
The shaft or spindle may be slotted or grooved axially to receive a locking pin carried by the other end roller for securing the assembly of rollers and washers together. Alternatively the shaft or spindle is partly screw threaded so that the other roller can be screw engaged thereon with the washers between the two end rollers.
Alternatively and preferably the other roller is simply locked in position by a locking screw acting on the shaft or spindle, preferably through the intermediary of an elastomeric (rubber) or plastics plug to prevent the locking screw from damaging the shaft or spindle. The locking screw may engage the shaft or spindle radially or radially offset (chordally).
It is to be clearly understood that both rollers may be removably fixed on the shaft or spindle by any of the aforesaid means.
If necessary formations can be formed on the rollers to facilitate tightening by the user's fingers or by a tool where the roller or rollers are screw engaged on the shaft or spindle.
Preferably the jig is formed of aluminium.
The jig may alternatively be formed of an engineering plastics material.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows one embodiment of two end rollers for a jig in perspective view;
Fig. 1A is a view of a modification of the jig of Fig Fig. 2 is a similar view of another set of end rollers;
Fig. 3 is a side view showing the jig used to form an angle section;
Fig. 4 is a side view showing the jig used to form a T-section; and
Figs. 5 to 7 are perspective views of alternative plastics sections which can be made using the jig according to the present invention.
A jig for use in forming plastics sections for model making comprises (see Fig. 1) two end rollers 10 and 11 formed of aluminium and with the roller 10 having an integral shaft or spindle 12 axially slotted as indicated at 13.
The roller 11 is adapted to be slid onto the shaft or spindle 12 and on its circumference mounts a locking screw 14 adapted to be engaged in the axial slot or groove 13 in the shaft or spindle 12 to secure the roller 11 in position on the shaft or spindle 12.
A modification and a preferred construction of the jig of Fig. 1 is shown in Fig. 1A. Here the shaft or spindle 12A is not slotted and the roller llA is secured on the latter by a locking screw 14A through the intermediary of a rubber plug 14B to prevent the locking screw 14A from damaging the shaft or spindle llA.
Alternative end rollers are shown in Fig. 2.
The roller 15 is formed with a partly screw threaded shaft or spindle 16 and the roller 17 is formed with a screw threaded bore 18 whereby the roller 17 can be screw engaged on the shaft or spindle 16.
The non-screw-threaded part 16A of the shaft or spindle 16 is to accommodate the washers referred to later.
Formations 19 are formed on the rollers 15 and 17 to facilitate tightening of the roller 17 on the shaft 16, but the formations 19 can be omitted. They form no part of the present invention.
The other components of the jig are aluminium washers 20 and 21 of differing diameters.
It can be seen from Fig. 3 how, by selecting appropriate washers 20, 21, a circumferential groove 22 of L-section can be formed in the jig. By locating two strips of plastics material designated 23, 24 in the required configuration the jig can be rolled along the strips, in the manner of a tram-line for example, and the user can apply, by means of a fine brush, a bonding or adhering solvent to the junction of the strips 23, 24, usually rearwardly of the travelling jig which the user rolls over a surface such as a workbench on which the plastic strips 23, 24 are laid in the desired relationship.
Considering Fig. 3 it will be manifest that if the other end washer 21A is dimensioned in correspondence with the washer 21 then a further strip 25 of the plastics material can be assembled to the plastic strips 23, 24 to form a channel section (see Fig. 6)
Referring now to Fig. 4 it can be seen how a
T-section can be formed using plastic strips 26, 27 with a smaller diameter washer 21 sandwiched between two larger diameter washers 20.
Waste plastics material can be dissolved in the solvent and applied over the surface of the assembled section of whatever configuration to provide an extra strong bonding cement.
