Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION PETTY PATENT THREAD COPYING MACHINE The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me.
THREAD COPYING MACHINE This machine relates to cutting a thread on a shaft or pipe utilising a lead thread with threads per inch and dimensions required.
This machine lends itself to situations where the shaft or pipe size is to large for conventional thread cutters and removal and replacement costs are prohibitive and time consuming. This machine can be taken to the job instead of the job being taken to the machine. Foe example, a semi- trailer axle with the thread damaged on the end of the axle usually has to be removed and taken to a work shop to be repaired. This machine is used while the axle is still in the trailer.
It consists of two threaded steel sleeves, one which screws over the other. The inner sleeve has an external thread and is fixed temporarily to the shaft or pipe to be threaded by means of a grub screws or other methods (spot weld etc.).
The longer outer sleeve has an internal thread with an adjustable tool steel cutter attached which is ground to the required angle or pitch.
When the outer sleeve is rotated it screws onto the inner sleeve and with the cutting tool adjusted to the required depth a copy of the thread between the two sleeves is cut into the pipe or shaft adjacent to the two sleeves.
The outer sleeve can be rotated by means of handles or gears driven by an electric motor etc.

In the drawing 1/1, FIG 1: Shows one example of the Thread Copying Machine according to this invention.
FIG 2: Shows one application of such a Thread Copying Machine applied to the axle of a trailer.
Referring to FIG 1. It can be seen that the Thread Copying Machine consists of two steel sleeves an inner 1 and outer 2. With an external thread on the inner sleeve 3 and an internal thread on the outer sleeve 4. The cutting tool 5 is held in place with a retaining bolt 6. The two handles 7 8 are screwed into place. The three grub screws 9 are tapped into the inner sleeve.
FIG 2. Shows the Thread Copying Machine in place on the axle 10 of a semitrailer.
The inner sleeve is slipped over the axle on to the bearing journal and fastened by the grub screws to hold it in place. With the cutting tool set to the correct depth the handles are turned causing the outer sleeve to screw on to the inner sleeve making the cutting tool cut a thread on the axle the same as the threads between the two sleeves.

Claims (1)

1. A Thread Copying Machine comprising of two steel compatible threaded sleeves, the inner sleeve being threaded on the outside with equally spaced short grub screws located toward one end of the sleeve that secures the sleeve to a pipe or shaft onto which a thread is to be copied, when the grub screws are tightened the outer sleeve which is threaded on the inside is able to be screwed over the inner sleeve, at one end the outer sleeve has two handles located opposite each other and also has an adjustable hardened steel cutting tool which is ground to the required shape is attached and adjusted to the required depth, when the handles are turned a thread the same as between the two sleeves will be cut as required onto the pipe or shaft adjacent to the inner sleeve. 01/06 '00 THU 07:24 [TX/RX NO 9127]
