Abstract
Dyestuffs, such as acid, basic, mordant and substantive dyes, are fixed on textile fabrics, paper &c. and particularly heavy fabrics such as plush, felt, &c., by treatment with hot oil or wax with or without a diluent or solvent, such as toluene, xylene, benzene, benzine, carbon tetrachloride or petroleum, thus obviating the ordinary steam treatment. Suitable fixing agents are hot wax, oil, paraffin oil, and olive oil, and preferably a mineral oil of boiling point 160-220 DEG C. applied at a temperature of 80-100 DEG C. The process may be applied to cloth-printing, hand-printing, spray-printing, stencilled and hand-painted goods. The material is afterwards dried and the fixing medium thereby evaporated. Discharge printing may also be similarly treated, the material being dyed and printed with a white or coloured discharge, such as hydrosulphite, in the usual way, and then passed through the fixing bath whereby the dye is fixed and the discharge effected simultaneously. In the case of basic dyestuffs the treatment with tannin and tartar emetic may be dispensed with. In a modification of the process a fixing bath of mineral oil of boiling point 160-220 DEG C. at a temperature of 80-100 DEG C. is applied to materials which have been dyed, fixed and dried in the usual way, whereby a further fixing is effected.
