Description
Adjustable Valley or Hip Roof Rafter
This invention relates to an adjustable valley or hip rafter for a joint between two sections of roof of unequal pitches.
Especially in the erection of building extensions, it is often desired to provide extension portions of differing depths measured outwardly from the original building, for example when erecting an L-shaped extension in or around a building corner. In this case, assuming that the line of the roof around the original building is to be kept to a uniform level, roof sections of unequal pitches must be provided. The provision of a joint between the two sections then presents a problem, in that it must either be individually tailored specially to suit each situation or it must in some wa be adaptable to the numerous situations which can arise in practice. It is an object of the present invention to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the invention, there is provided an adjustable valley or hip rafter for a joint between two sections of roof of unequal pitch, comprising a principal rafter member which has a first part of cylindrical external shape an second part projecting laterally outwardly fro aid first part, two angle section members each having a part of convexly and circularly arcuate shape matching the external shape of the principal rafter member and a web prceectinc laterally outwardly frow said arcuate part, ano means for fixing the two angle section members in selected alar positions of adjustment around the principal rafter member, with the arcuate parts of said angle section members in engagement with the cylindrical part of said principal rafter rnewber, the said webs of said angle section nerbers having formations for the support and/or location of transverse rafter elements and/or roof panels.
The term "valley" is used herein to refer to a rafter provided between two roof sections of differing pitch and which meet to define a valley in the roof, while the term "hip" is used to refer to such a rafter provided between two roof sections which meet to define a ridge in the roof.
Preferably, the angle section members each have a second web projecting laterally outwardly from the arcuate part at an angle to the first said web. When the angle section members are assembled to the principal rafter member, the two second said webs are disposed on opposite sides of the laterally projecting part of the principal rafter member, and means are provided to effect sealing between said laterally projecting part of the principal rafter member and said second webs.
The above-mentioned sealing means may conveniently comprise an elongate rafter cap fixing to the outside edge of the laterally projecting part of the principal rafter member, glazing beads which attach to the second webs, as by cilpping into suitabe forratlons on said second webs, sealing strips operative between the rafter cap and the respective glazing beads. Further sealing means may be operative between the glazing beads and roof panels located and supported, again via sealing strips, on the first webs of the angle section members.
Preferably, the principal rafter member and the angle section members are formed of extruded aluminium, provided with formations adapted to receive clip-on UPVC c-ladd~nc strips which cover at least the cylindrical part of the principal rafter member and the interior side of the first webs opposite to the side thereof locating and/or supporting the transverse rafter elements and/or roof panels.
For assisting standardisation of parts, the angle section members may differ in respect of the respective angles between their first and second webs. The possible use of two angle section members of smaller included angle between the first and second webs, or two of larger included angle between said webs, or one angle section of smaller and one of larger included angle, will generally enable a practicable valley joint to be constructed and sealed in the abovedescribed manner in most situations likely to arise in practice. For hip joints, two angle section members of differing but in both cases larger included angle may be employed, and/or the second webs of these members may be integrally formed with arcuate tails, the first sealing means afore-mentiored acting between the laterally projecting part of the principal rafter member and these tails.
Although specifically intended to deal with joints between roof sections of unequal pitches, clearly the valley or hip rafter of this inventIon ray also be employed at a joint between.Thy - pltcneo roof 5COtrn-0 A practical embodiment of valley rafter in accordance with the invention is exemplified in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows an adjustable valley rafter in cross-section
in a plane normal to the length of the rafter;
Figure 2 shows the same rafter in a different position of
adjustment;
Figures 3 to 7 show the principal components of the rafter
individually; and
Figure 8 shows an adjustable hip rafter in analogous manner
to Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1, the illustrated adjustable valley rafter comprises a principal rafter member 10 having a cylindrical part 12 and a laterally projecting part 14 of
T-shaped cross section. This member 10 is shown individually in Figure 3.
Assembled to the member 10 by means of fixing screws 16 are two angle section members 18 and 20. Each said angle section member has a circularly arcuate part 22 matching and fitting against the curve of the cylindrical part 12 of the member 10, and two laterally projecting webs 24, 2 disposed at an angle to one another.The two angle section members 18 and 20 are respectively also shown in Figures 4 and 5, and it is to be noted that the member 20 has an arcuate part 22 extending over a larger angle than the corresponding part of the member 18, so that there is a larger Included ankle between the webs 2, 26 in the member 2 ta the correspond Inc angle In the refer 18. Tne reason for this will be made apparent later. The angle section members 18, 20 are fixed in selected positions of angular adjustment around the part 12, to suit the angle at which two roof sections are to meet.
Assembled to the angle section members 18, 20 are respective glazing beads 28, 30, shown individually in Figures 6 and 7. These beads have limbs 32, 34 which clip between shaped lips 36, 38 provided on the respective angle section members 18, 2. The angles between the limbs 32, 3 of the respective beads 28, 30 differ from one another dependently on the differing included angles of the respective angle section members 18, 20.
A rafter cap 40 attaches by means of fixing screws 42, concealed by a cover strip 44, to the outer end of the Tpart 14 of the principal rafter member 10. The cover cap has edge formations 46 for holding sealing strips 48 which act to seal the cover to the glazing beads 28, 30, thereby to assist in sealing the rafter joint against ingress of water.
Additionally, the glazing beads 28, 3C have formations 50 for holding sealing strips 52 which seal against roof panels 54 which are supported by the webs 26 of angle section members 18, 20. The roof panels, for example of Plexiglas (Trade Mark), are held down against further sealing strips 56 mounted to aluminium clips 58 which attach to formations 60 on the webs 26 of the angle section members 18, 20. The clips 58 are provided only at points along the webs 26 in between transverse jack rafters. These jack rafters, alt not show, attach by means of fixing screws to s-ira flats locate in the formations 6C.
In conjunction with the unitary formation of the angle section members 18, 20, the illustrated sealing arrangement substantially ensures that water is unable to penetrate from the outside downwardly through the roof jcint.
UPVC cladding sections 62, 64 are provided on the cylindrical part 12 of the principal rafter member and the underside of the webs 26 of the angle section members 18, 25.
For clarity, Figure 1 shows the roof rafter fixec in one position of adjustment, suited to a valley joint between two roof sections differing in pitch by one angle, and
Figure 2, wherein the same reference numerals are employed as in Figure 1, shows the same roof rafter fixed in another position of adjustment, suited to a valley joint between two roof sections differing in pitch by another, greater angle.
For a standard rafter cap to be used universally, a range of adjustment sufficient to cover virtually all situations likely to arise in practice is achievable by use of the two angle section members 18, 20 of differing included angle, as above described. In extreme cases, moreover, either two members 18 of smaller included angle may be used, or two members 20 of larger included angle. It will also be apparent that, by use of angle section members of still larger included angle, the same adjustable rafter arrangement may be employed for the construction of hip joints between roof seot.Q:ns of differing pitches.
In practice, the angle section members 18, 20 may be adjusted relative to and secured to the principal rafter member 10 on site, but alternatively and possibly preferably this adjustment anc secur g step may razz be effected in the factory, given that all reairernents for erection at a particular site are known, the parts 10, 18 and 20 then being delivered to the site as a unitary assembly.
Figure 8 shows a modification of the arrangement of Figure 1, for a hip rafter. The arrangement is generally similar to that of Figure 1, and similar reference numerals are employed for corresponding parts. However, the webs 24 of the members 18, 20 are integrally formed with arcuate tails 70, and the sealing strips 48 (not shown in Figure 8) act to.
seal the cover cap 4S to these tails.
The adjustable roof rafter joint of the invention is especially suited to the erection of building extensions, where a common requirement is the provision of an L-shaped or even more complex plan shape in which the depths of different parts of the extension, measured from the walls of the original building, are not the same. In such a case, given that the maximum height of the extension relative to the original building is to be constant, this is only achievable with abutting roof sections of differing pitch.
The adjustable rafter of this invention avoids the necessity for tailoring a valley or hip joint to each specific construction, with resulting substantial economy due to standardisation of parts.
