Abstract

222,430. Sheppard, C. E., (Assignee of Cooke, C. J., and Rennie, J. A.). Sept. 25, 1923, [Convention date]. Returning sound-box to starting-point.-Relates to repeating devices for gramophones of the kind comprising an arm pivoted eccentrically on a base-piece which is placed upon the record when in use, the free end of the arm being adapted to engage the needle when the playing is completed, and transfer the sound-box to the beginning of the record by reason of the movement of the arm relatively to the base that occurs when the arm engages the needle. According to the invention, the arm is so mounted that it yields transversely to the record if the engagement of its end with the needle is, at the first contact therewith, incomplete; the arm is thereby enabled to pass by the needle and make another revolution, so that effective engagement can then occur. The base-plate 10 has fixed thereto a hollow thimble 12 which fits over the central stud on the turntable, spring gripping-fingers being provided within the thimble. An arm 26 is mounted on a stud 15 pivoted on the base-plate, the arm being attached by a pin 24 fixed between flanges on the arm and engaging in an elongated hole 23 in the stud. A coiled spring 19 surrounds the stud, its outer free end 31 being secured to a tongue 27 which depends from the arm 26. The spring tends to keep the arm in contact with the part 12, and also to hold the pin 24 towards the forward end of the slot 23, as shown in Fig. 4. A raised cam 20 is provided on the plate 10, concentrically with the stud 15. The outer end of the arm 26 is formed with fingers 28 having a V-groove between them. During the reproduction of the record, the plate 10 and the arm 26 rotate together, but at the end of the playing, the needle D is caught between the fingers 28 and the arm 26 is thereby retarded. The continuing rotation of the base 10 causes the cam 20 to pass under the tongue 27 and lift the outer end of the arm 26, together with the sound-box. The arm 26 then swings outwards as shown in Fig. 3, carrying the soundbox to the starting-point of the record, on which it is deposited as the cam 20 moves from under the tongue 27. The arm 26, thereupon escaping under the needle, is returned by the spring 19 to its original position against the member 12. The above-described engagement of the fingers 28 with the needle D may occur as soon as contact takes place. If, however, the feed-movement caused by the record grooves is such that the needle is not in a position to pass into the notch between the fingers when it is first encountered, the arm 26 may yield lengthwise owing to its resilient mounting in the slot 23, thereby being enabled to pass by the needle for a final revolution.
