Abstract

A transport cylinder (1) suitable for a multicolour sheet feed printing machine comprises a rigid core (2) covered on the exterior thereof with a flexible sheet material (3). The material (3) provides a plurality of radially outwardly extending stiff filamentary protrusions (4). The transport cylinder reduces the extent to which printed matter is contaminated with spurious ink marks as a result of contamination of the transfer cylinder with ink. The sheet (3) and protrusions (4) may be constituted by either part of a "hook and loop" type fastening. <IMAGE>

Description

TRANSPORT CYLINDER FOR PRINTING MACHINE This invention relates to a transport cylinder for a printing machine, that is to say a cylinder which is used in a printing machine to assist in the transport of matter being printed through the machine. The transport cylinder may be driven or may idle, and may contact the obverse or reverse side of matter being printed. A particularly preferred embodiment of the invention relates to a transfer cylinder for use in a printing machine.
In rotary printing machines the matter to be printed is transported through the machine via one or more transport cylinders. Such transport cylinders are liable to be contaminated with printing ink, and if this occurs such ink is liable to contaminate the matter being printed.
This can lead to quality control rejection of the printed matter. The problem is particularly acute in the case of multi-colour sheet fed printing machines in which transfer cylinders are used to contact the printed face of matter being printed between each printing stage. If any one of these transfer cylinders becomes contaminated with ink, the matter printed is liable to be marked in an unacceptable manner. In the prior art, such transfer cylinders have been treated with a silicon material with a view to reducing the risk of ink contamination, but such treatment is not wholly satisfactory.
According to one aspect of the present invention a transport cylinder for a printing machine comprises a body and a multiplicity of stiff filamentary protrusions extending from the body whereby the surface of the cylinder which is contacted by matter to be printed is formed by the radially outermost portions of the protrusions.
Although the invention is a particular application to the transfer cylinders of a colour printing machine, the invention is of potential use in relation to all cylinders used for the transport of material through a printing machine.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the transport cylinder comprises a rigid core having a surface to which a flexible sheet material is releasably secured to provide the desired protrusions. The flexible sheet material can advantageously be adhesively secured to the core and can readily be removed and changed when the material becomes worn or unacceptably contaminated with ink. The flexible sheet material can advantageously be in the form of a flexible web having extended from one surface thereof the filamentary protrusions. For example, the flexible sheet material may be the male component of "touch and close" fastener material. In preferred embodiments of the invention, the male component of touch and close material is of polypropylene, and the filamentary protrusions terminate in mushroom heads or hook ends.
The invention will be better understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof given by way of example only, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 shows schematically a cross-section through a transfer cylinder of a printing machine; and Figures 2 and 3 show portions of the cylinder of Figure 1 on a larger scale, showing respectively an embodiment of the invention making use of mushroom protrusions, and an embodiment of the invention making use of hook ended protrusions.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, there is shown a schematic cross-sectional view of a transfer cylinder 1 for use in a multi-colour sheet fed printing machine. The transfer cylinder 1 comprises a rigid core 2 covered on the exterior surface thereof with a flexible sheet material 3.
The flexible sheet material may be secured to the core by any suitable means, and in the preferred embodiment of the invention the flexible sheet material is coated on one surface with a pressure sensitive adhesive so that it may readily be adhesively secured to the core 2, and stripped from the core 2 for replacement.
The material 3 provides a plurality of radially outwardly extending stiff filamentary protrusions 4 whereby the surface of the transfer cylinder which contacts matter to be printed is formed by the radially outermost ends of the protrusions. The protrusions are short, numerous and closely spaced. For example protrusions having a length of 0.6 mm and a density of 77 protrusions per square centimeter has been found to be satisfactory. The protrusions are sufficiently stiff to resist crushing by items to be printed in use of the machine.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, two practical embodiments of the invention are illustrated in greater detail. In the embodiment of Figure 2, the flexible sheet material comprises a base layer 5 having the filamentary protrusions 4 extending therefrom. The free end of each filamentary protrusion is enlarged relative to the shaft of the filamentary protrusion to provide each filamentary protrusion with a generally "mushroom" shape.
Referring now to Figure 3, the flexible sheet material comprises a base layer 5A from which the protrusions 4 extend. At least some of the protrusions have hook-like ends.
The flexible sheet materials may conveniently be one of the members of known touch and close systems.
It has been found that use of the transfer cylinder described above significantly reduces the extent to which printed matter is contaminated with spurious ink marks as a result of contamination of the transfer cylinder with ink. As a result, the problem of quality control rejection of printed material because of spurious ink marks is greatly reduced. Further, it has been found that the proposed transfer cylinder improves sheet handling within printing machines by reduction of friction in the transfer process. This reduction in friction relieves the printed material of stresses to which it would otherwise be subject, and thereby improves the register of the matter to be printed in the various stages of colour printing.
Whilst, as indicated above, the invention may be practiced using the male component of touch and close fastening materials, it is believed that the invention may be practiced using other suitable flexible sheet materials having appropriate protrusions, including the female component of touch and close fastening materials.
