Abstract
In a method of installing a heating boiler 12 in a cavity wall 2 having inner and outer walls 4, 6 respectively, and a cavity 8, an opening 10 is made in one or other or both of the walls 4 and 6 and the heating boiler 12 is mounted in the opening 10 such that it extends into the region of the cavity 8, thereby substantially reducing the amount it projects from the cavity wall 2. <IMAGE>
Description
HEATING BOILER INSTALLATIONS
This invention relates to the installation of heating boilers and particularly to domestic central heating boilers which run on a combustible fuel such as gas or fuel oil.
There is a continuing requirement to make domestic central heating boilers as inconspicuous as possible and this has been achieved by developing techniques whereby they may be made physically smaller so that, for example, they can be wall mounted, and also by using techniques which enable them to be incorporated in, for example, a standard kitchen cabinet.
It has been appreciated, however, that in many situations a heating boiler is installed either on or adjacent a cavity wall of a building, such as a domestic dwelling, and it is an object of the present invention to provide a method of installing a heating boiler which makes use of the features of a cavity wall in order to make the heating boiler less conspicuous.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of installing a heating boiler in a cavity wall having inner and outer walls separated by a cavity, comprising the steps of forming an opening in at least one of the inner and outer walls of said cavity wall, and mounting a heating boiler in said opening such that it extends into the cavity of said cavity wall.
By arranging that the heating boiler is mounted within at least one of the inner and outer walls and in the cavity, approximately half or more of the heating boiler may be contained within the actual cavity wall so that it becomes very inconspicuous.
In one preferred arrangement for carrying out the invention, said opening is formed in the inner wall of said cavity wall, and the heating boiler is mounted in said opening so that the back wall thereof is located in said cavity adjacent the outer wall of said cavity wall.
Advantageously, the additional step of forming a flue opening in the outer wall of said cavity wall for receiving a flue outlet of said heating boiler will be provided.
In a second preferred arrangement for carrying out the invention, said opening is formed in the outer wall of said cavity wall, and the heating boiler is mounted in said opening so that the back wall thereof is located in said cavity adjacent the inner wall of said cavity wall.
Preferably, said second preferred arrangement will include the steps of mounting a boiler casing in said opening with the back wall of the casing adjacent the inner wall of said cavity wall, and mounting said heating boiler within said casing so as to extend outwardly from said inner wall.
Advantageously, the method may comprise mounting the boiler casing so that the back wall thereof abuts said inner wall and is, preferably, fixed thereto, and said heating boiler may be a standard wall-mountable boiler having a casing, said boiler casing surrounding the casing of the wall-mountable boiler.
In a third preferred arrangement for carrying out the invention, said opening is formed in both the inner and outer walls of said cavity wall, and said heating boiler is mounted in said opening so as to extend into both said inner and outer walls.
Some exemplary embodiments of the invention will now be described reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, are cross-sectional side and plan views and a front view respectively, of a heating boiler installed in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention;
FIG. 4, is a partially cross-sectional side view of a heating boiler installed in accordance with a second embodiment of the present invention; and
FIG. 5, is a partially cross-sectional side view of a heating boiler installed in accordance with a third embodiment of the present invention.
In FIGS. 1 to 3 of the drawings, there is depicted a cavity wall 2 having inner and outer walls 4, 6 respectively, separated by a cavity 8. An opening 10 is made in the inner wall 4, which may be provided with a supporting lintel (not shown), and in the opening 10 is mounted a heating boiler 12. It is arranged that the back wall 14 of the heating boiler 12 extends into the region of the cavity 8 and lies adjacent the inside face 16 of the outer wall 6. The outer wall 6 is provided with a flue opening 18 through which extends a flue outlet 20 of the heating boiler 12.
From FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawings, it will be appreciated that by making use of the opening 10 in the inner wall 4 and the cavity 8, approximately half of the depth of the heating boiler 12 may be located within the cavity wall 2.
It is envisaged that the principle of mounting a heating boiler in an opening in the inner wall of a cavity wall may be applied to any kind of heating boiler, whether it be wall or floor mounted.
In FIG. 3 of the drawings, there is depicted the heating boiler 12 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 mounted in an opening 10 in a cavity wall 2, the heating boiler 12 being positioned beneath a window 22 in place of a central heating radiator which would normally be positioned under the window 22. Thus, the heating boiler 12 installed as described may take the place of a conventional radiator, thereby rendering it even more inconspicuous, and making it unnecessary to site the heating boiler in the kitchen or elsewhere, thereby saving more space.
In FIG. 4 of the accompanying drawings, there is shown a heating boiler 12 installed in an outer wall 6 of a cavity wall 2 in accordance with another embodiment of the present invention.
In FIG. 4, an opening 10 is made in the outer.wall 6 of the cavity wall 2 and a boiler casing 24 is then positioned in the opening 10 with the back wall 26 of the casing 24 being fixed to the inside face 28 of the inner wall 4. Any gap between the boiler casing 24 and the opening 10 is made good.
A standard wall-mountable central heating boiler 2 is then mounted within the casing 24 and is attached to the back wall 26. The pipework and any electrical cabling is led to the boiler 12 through the inner wall 4. A front cover 30 having vents 32 for combustion products is then fixed to the casing 24. The cover 30 is removable from the casing 24 to provide access for servicing or adjustment of the boiler.
By such installation, not only is use made of the cavity 8 so that the boiler 12 projects less distance outwardly of the cavity wall 2, but less heat is lost to the exterior of the building.
Although in FIG. 4 it is considered that the provision of a boiler casing 24 in addition to the actual heating boiler 12 is preferable, it is envisaged that the boiler casing could be dispensed with and the heating boiler 12 mounted directly within the opening 10. In this case, the front of the opening 10, and therefore the boiler 12 may be protected from the elements by a suitable front cover, which again may be arranged to hinge upwards.
In FIG. 5 of the drawings, there is shown a modification of the arrangement depicted in FIG. 1, in which the opening 10 is formed in both the inner and outer walls 4 and 6 of the cavity wall 2 and a heating boiler 12 is mounted almost totally within the opening 10, the front face 34 of the heating boiler 12 being accessible on the inside of the cavity wall 2 and the back wall 36 of the heating boiler, from which extends the flue outlet 20, being accessible from the outside of the cavity wall 2. Again, some protection of the back wall 36 of the heating boiler 12 may be provided.
It will be appreciated that the heating boiler 12 may take any convenient form provided appropriate flueing arrangements can be made through flue outlet 20.
