Abstract

A skate board has a turntable allowing the performer to spin whilst travelling along. The turntable may have a depending overlapping lip and may have a spigot inserted into a cylindrical recess in the base unit rotary movement being provided by a ball race.

Description

SKATE BOARDS This invention relates to skate boards.
In accordance with the invention a skate board comprises a wheeled base on which a turntable is freely rotatable. The rotatable turntable allows a whole new range of movements to be performed since it gives the ability for the performer to spin whilst the board is travelling.
Preferably, the turntable is circular having a diameter of from 38 cm to 42 cm. The base is also preferably circular the turntable having a depending lip which covers the base.
In one embodiment, the turntable is supported on the base by a ball race allowing said free rotation.
The base preferably has three or more wheels in the form of castors.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a base of a skateboard embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of the base of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of a turntable for the base of Figurel; Figure 4 is a plan view of the turntable of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a side view of the skateboard with the turntable assembled on the base; and Figure 6 is a cross-section showing a detail of the centre of the base and turntable.
The base shown in Figures 1 and 2, is a circular plastics moulding having a flat upper surface 4. Wheels are provided on the underside of the base, in the form of four castors 6 which are equally spaced around the base to provide stability. Other numbers of castors, for example three, are possible. Due to the use of castors the base can move readily in any direction. If it were desired to restrict the movement of the base, non castor wheels could be used, for example wheels steerable by leaning, as in a conventional skateboard.
Over the base fits a plastics turntable 8, shown separately in Figure 3. The turntable is also circular, having a generally flat upper surface 10 and a downwardly depending lip 12. When the turntable is assembled on the base, the lip covers the sides of the base and may assist in preventing the turntable from slipping off the base. Affixed to the underside of the turntable is a ball race 12 which supports the turntable on the base, allowing the base to rotate freely.
The upper surface of the turntable may be formed with a non slip tread.
Additional or alternative constraint to prevent the turntable from slipping off the base may be provided in the form illustrated in Figure 6. Here the center of the underside of the turntable is formed with a cylindrical spigot 14 which is rotatable in a cylindrical recess 16. In another arrangement, not shown, the turntable and the base may be loosely through bolted at the centre, but the advantage of the arrangements illustrated is that the turntable can be lifted off the base which can then be used separately.

Claims (6)
