Description
A TOOL FOR FORMING REVEALS AND
CORNERS IN BUILDINGS
This invention relates to a tool for use in forming reveals and corners in buildings.
In the building industry, window frame reveals are notoriously difficult to form. Specialist plasterers are required to form the reveals but the reveals are often not true. An incorrectly formed reveal invariably puts the plastering for an entire wall out of alignment.
Furthermore, if the edge of a reveal is not straight, then difficulty may be encountered in papering a wall or in placing edge beading around a window frame.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a tool which reduces the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, this invention provides a tool for use in forming reveals and corners in buildings, which tool comprises a handle by which the tool is held, a body portion, scraper means which is provided on the body portion and which is for scraping excess material from the reveal or corner, and depth control means for controlling the depth at which the scraper means operates during use of the tool.
The tool of the present invention may be used in forming various reveals and corners from a wide variety of materials including cement, bonding and plaster. The depth control means may be such as to run along the edge of a frame such for example as a window frame or a door frame, with the scraper means then being available for removing excess material. In addition, any daylight appearing between the edge of the scraper means and the material will indicate where a hollow lies which requires to be filled with more material.
Preferably, the tool is one in which the depth control means projects from a first face of the body portion, and in which the scraper means projects from a second face of the body portion, the second face being at right angles to the first face. With such a tool, the body portion may be L-shaped with the first and the second faces being one on each side of the L-shaped body portion.
The depth control means may comprise a roller member for rolling along an edge of a recess or an aperture, which edge forms a reference edge during use of the tool.
Preferably, the depth control means is an adjustable depth control means. The adjustable depth control means may comprise a captive bolt and a nut arrangement which is such that the nut is caused to move up and down the captive bolt on rotation of the captive bolt.
Usually, the scraper means will comprise a pair of blades. The blades may be located one on either side of the body portion. Other types of scraper means may be employed including a single blade if desired.
Usually, the scraper means will be secured to the body portion by being screwed to the body portion. The scraper means is then replaceable in the event of wear.
Other means for securing the scraper means to the body portion may be employed if desired.
The tool may include a measuring scale for measuring the depth set by the depth control means. The measuring scale may give metric ansslor imperial units. The measuring scale may be adjacent the depth control means.
The tool may include at least one spirit level vial.
Two spirit level vials may be employed if desired, one for giving an indication when the tool is vertical, and one for giving an indication when the tool is horizontal.
The tool may be made of'a variety of materials including metals and plastics materials and combinations of metals and plastics materials.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view from above of a first tool in use so that the tool is seen in side view;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the tool as shown in
Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a second tool.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a tool 2 for use in forming a reveal 4 and a corner 6 in a building. Figure 1 shows a cross section through a vertically extending reveal 4, with Figure 1 also showing a cross section through part of a vertically extending window frame side member 8. As can be seen from Figure 1, the material forming the reveal 4 has been laid in a parallel symmetrical layer abuting the window frame side member 8.
The tool 2 comprises a handle 10 by which the tool 2 is held. The tool2 also comprises a body portion 12 and scraper means in the form of a pair of blades 14, 16 which are for scraping excess material from the reveal or corner. In Figure 2, the blades 14, 16 are shown spaced apart from the body portion 12 for ease of illustration and understanding. The tool 2 further comprises depth control means 18 for controlling the depth at which the blades 14, 16 operate during use of the tool 2.
As can be seen from Figure 1, the depth control means 18 projects from a first face 20 of the body portion 12. The blades 14, 16 project from a second face 22 of the body portion 12. The first face 20 and the second face 22 are at right angles to one another. The body portion 12 is L-shaped with the first and the second faces 20, 22 being one on each side of the L-shaped body portion 12. As can be seen from Figure 1, the L-shaped body portion 12 fits into the window frame area defined by the window frame side member 8 and the brickwork (not shown) on which the reveal 4 is formed.
The depth control means 18 comprises a roller member 24 which rolls along the edge of a face 26 of the window frame side member 8 during use of the tool 2. Thus the face 26 of the window frame side member 8 acts as a reference edge for determining where the blades 14, 16 are positioned.
The depth control means 18 is an adjustable depth control means 18 and it comprises a captive bolt and nut arrangement 28. The captive nut and bolt arrangement 28 comprises a screw threaded bolt 30 which is fixed in position at its end 32 to the body portion 12. The screw threaded bolt 30 has a head 34 and a shank 36 which passes through a screw threaded nut 38 to which the roller 24 is mounted. Rotation of the head 34 of the screw threaded bolt 30 causes the screw threaded nut 38 to move up and down the shank 36. Thus the roller 24 is able to move up and down the first face 20 of the body portion 12 to define the distance of which the blades 14, 16 operate and therefore the thickness of the reveal 4. The roller 24 is mounted on an axle 40 which operates in a slot (not shown) in the first face 20 of the body portion 12.
The blades 14, 16 are located in position on opposite sides of the body portion 12 by means of screws 42 engaging in apertures 44. If the blades should wear, the screws 42 can easily be undone and new blades screwed to the body portion 12.
The handle 10 comprises a circular grip portion 46 which fits in a recess 48 in a member 50 which projects outwardly from the main part of the body portion 12.
The first face 20 of the body portion 12 is provided with a pair of slide members 52, 54 which may slide against the window frame side member 8 during use of the tool 2. These slide members 52, 54 act as wear strips and they act to prevent wear occuring on the first face 20.
The slide members 52, 54 can be screwed into position so that they can easily be replaced as and when they become worn.
Referring now to Figure 3, there is shown a second tool 2 in which similar parts as in Figures 1 and 2 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison and understanding.
In Figure 3, the roller 24 is mounted on a longer axle 40 than in Figures 1 and 2. The axle 40 extends through a locking member 56 which slides up and down in a channel 58 formed in the first face 20 of the body portion 12. The axle 40 can be screwed through the locking member 56 to cause the locking member 56 to bind in the channel 58 and thus hold the roller 24 at a desired depth.
In Figure 3, the slide members 52, 54 have been replaced by a slide plate 60 which then forms the first face 20 of the body portion 12. The slide plate 60 is held in position by screws 62.
The side plate 60 is provided with an imperial measuring scale and a metric measuring scale as shown0 These two scales are provided one on either side of the channel 58.
The tool 2 shown in Figure 3 is also provided with a pair of spirit level vials 64, 66. The spirit level vials 64, 66 fit in recesses in a face 68 of the body portion 12 and they are able to indicate when the tool 2 is being held in a vertical and a horizontal position.
The tool 2 enables highly accurate reveals and corners to be formed in a simple manner. The reveals and corners can be formed where desired in buildings so that they may be formed in window areas, door areas, cupboard areas and general recessed areas. The depth control means will usually be able to sit on a frame part which may be a main frame part. A corner may be defined by an angle bead which may be tacked in position as is well known to plasterers. The tool can be used with a variety of materials including cement, bonding and plaster. During use of the tool 2, it is only necessary to go over a material once in order to get the required accurate surface finish. Thus much time is saved in forming reveals and corners. Where the tool 2 is used with window frames, the window frames may be made of wood, aluminium or plastics materials.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the handle 10 and the body portion 12 may be of a different shape than shown.
The present invention also extends to each and every feature described and/or illustrated, taken singly or in any combination.
The cutter blades or other cutter means may have slots for screws, so that the cutter blades or other cutter means are adjustable on the body portion 12.
