Abstract
A pack (1) has a first sheet and a second sheet (3) overlying the first sheet, the sheets being formed to define therebetween an enclosed space(s) for articles such as table tennis balls. A free region (8) surrounds the enclosed space over which the sheets lie flat together and an attached region (9) at least partly surrounds the enclosed space (5) over which the sheets are unreleasably fixed together to prevent opening of the pack. Fastening means (10) is provided for releasably attaching together those parts of the sheets which form the enclosed space, such that after cutting away the attached region (9) of the sheets a user can open the pack, and reclose the pack by virtue of the fastening means (10). <IMAGE>
Description
A PACK
The invention relates to a pack for housing articles, for example table-tennis balls.
The invention provides a pack which can be used to contain articles securely when in a shop, but which on opening by the user provides a reclosable pack.
Furthermore, it is readily apparent to a buyer by examination of the pack if the pack has previously been opened or tampered with.
According to the present invention there is provided a pack comprising: a first sheet; a second sheet overlying the first sheet, the sheets being formed to define therebetween an enclosed space for articles; a free region surrounding the enclosed space over which the sheets lie flat together; an attached region, at least partly surrounding the enclosed space, over which the sheets are unreleasably fixed together to prevent opening of the pack; and fastening means for releasably attaching together those parts of the sheets which form the enclosed space, such that after cutting away the attached region of the sheets a user can open the pack, and reclose the pack by virtue of the fastening means.
An embodiment of the invention will be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 shows a plan view of the pack; and
FIGURE 2 shows a side view of the pack.
A clam-pack 1 comprises a first plastics sheet 2 and a second plastics sheet 3. The sheets 2, 3 are typically formed from a single thin gauge sheet of a thermoplastic, for example PVC; by a vacuum moulding process, the single sheet being folded along line 4, such that the second sheet 3 overlies the first sheet 2.
By using a number of folds to form the hinge line 4 as shown in Figure 2 a relatively stiff hinge can be provided.
The first and second sheets 2, 3 are formed with a number of depressions 5, 6 such that the sheets define therebetween an enclosed space or spaces 7 in which the articles to be contained sit.
In the present embodiment the depressions 5, 6 are essentially part-spherical in shape and form a triangular arrangement as shown in Figure 1, six depressions on the first sheet 2 being mirrored by six depressions on the second sheet 3 in order to define an enclosed space for six table-tennis balls.
Alternatively the depressions could be arranged linearly, for example in two rows of three.
A free region 8 of the sheets, in which the sheets lie flat together but are unattached to each other, surrounds those parts of the sheets which form the enclosed space 7.
An attached region 9 of the sheets at least partly surrounds both the enclosed space and the free region 8 of the sheets. In this region the sheets are unreleasably fixed together, for example by welding or glueing, in order to prevent the opening of the pack.
Fastening means 10 are provided on the free region of the sheets in the form of a simple stud and socket formed integrally with the sheets, for releasably attaching together those parts of the sheets which form the enclosed space 7.
Receiving spaces 11, 12 defined by depressions in one or both of the sheets 2, 3 are provided on a part of the pack remote from the hinge 4, in order to contain printed matter for advertising or instructional purposes.
In order to open the pack for the first time, the user cuts away the attached region 9 of the sheets by cutting along a cut line 13 which extends across the pack in the free region of the sheets, such that the receiving spaces 11, 12 are also cut away, whilst the fastening means 10 are retained on that part of the pack which includes the enclosed space 7. The cut line 1 can be physically indicated on the sheets such as by a printed line or perforations in the sheets, or could alternatively be shown in instructions for opening the pack contained in the receiving spaces 11, 12. Once the cut has been made, the pack can be hinged open and the contents removed. The pack can then be reclosed and reopened by virtue of the fastening means 10.
A slot 14 is provided in the attached region 9 of the sheets so that the pack can be hung on an arm of a display device for displaying in a shop.
In alternative embodiments the sheets 2, 3 may be formed from separate plastics sheets, and instead of a hinge 4 a further welded region may be provided in its place. All or part of this further welded region may need to be cut away in order to open the closure for the first time.
Claims (5)
1. A pack comprising: a first sheet; a second sheet overlying the first sheet, the sheets being formed to define therebetween an enclosed space for articles; a free region surrounding the enclosed space over which the sheets lie flat together; an attached region, at least partly surrounding the enclosed space, over which the sheets are unreleasably fixed together to prevent opening of the pack; and fastening means for releasably attaching together those parts of the sheets which form the enclosed space, such that after cutting away the attached region of the sheets a user can open the pack, and reclose the pack by virtue of the fastening means.
2. A pack according to claim 1 wherein the fastening means comprises at least one stud and socket formed integrally with the first and second sheets respectively.
3. A pack according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the sheets are formed from a single sheet of plastics by a vacuum moulding process, the single sheet being folded along a hinge such that the second sheet overlies the first sheet.
4. A pack according to claim 3 wherein, in the attached region of the sheets, the sheets are unreleasably welded together.
5. A pack substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
