Abstract
222,170. Simpson, C. H. May 23, 1923. Cutting slices in succession. - In a slicing- machine, a rotary knife is provided consisting of a single convolution of a helix, the cutting-edge having a spiral contour. The knife pulls the foodstuff forward and the slice thickness is varied by adjusting the pitch of the helix. The knife 5 is secured at its entering edge 6 to a bush 8 integral with a collar 19 splined to a shaft 4, and the following edge is secured to a collar 10 fixed to the shaft. The collar 19 is longitudinally positioned by its bearing, axial movement of the shaft 4 thereby adjusting the helical pitch of the blade 5, this being effected by two cam discs 11, 12. The disc 11 bears against a collar 13, secured to the shaft 4, and is held against rotation by a rod 11<a> which engages a bored lug on the disc 11. The disc 12 is rotated for adjustment by a lever 16 which is locked by a spring lever 18 engaging a notched quadrant 17. The spring 24 tends to return the knife to zero pitch, and a spring 25 bears against a boss 22, on the bevel wheel 21, having a set-screw 23 which engages a slot in the shaft 4. The knife is rotated by a handle 36, shaft 34, and bevel wheels 21, 26, 32, 33, a fly-wheel 37 being provided. The meat table 38 may have a slight inclination and spiked rollers 40, 41 in the table and 42, 43 on the clamping-arm reduce the sliding friction of the foodstuff. When cutting heavy foodstuffs the rollers 40, 41 may be moved positively by a counterweight, cord, and a grooved pulley on the shaft 39. Ball bearings may be used where desirable.
