Abstract
The window (or door) has a frame predominantly of plastics material having a reinforcing bar 28, 29 within the frame and a handle 19 on the inside of an openable light 17 (or door) operable to extend a bolt member 24, 25 into engagement with a keep 26, 27 within frame and secured to the reinforcing bar 28, 29. The window shown has bar 28 and keep 26 located within side frame member 11 and bar 29 and keep 27 located with side member 12-bar extend over substantially entire height of members 11, 12. Handle 19 which may have a key lock is of Cockspur kind but has a spigot engaging lever 20 having rods 22, 23 pivotally connected to its opposite ends and extending to connect with bolt members 24, 26. <IMAGE>
Description
WINDOWS
This invention concerns windows of the kind (hereinafter termed of the kind referred to) generally known as replacement windows - though they can, and sometimes are, installed as original equipment - and whose frames are made predominantly from a plastics material such as polyvinyl chloride.
Windows of the kind referred to present a serious security problem in that lock parts - of whatever quality - are generally secured to the relatively soft plastics material by screws and readily broken free with little force applied by a suitable instrument such as a jemmy or wrecking bar. The windows can also be attacked with a blow torch applied to soften the plastics material around lock parts which can then be drawn through the material by applying force to open the windows.
It is an object of the present invention to provide windows of the kind referred to which is more secure than those presently available.
According to the present invention there is provided a window of the kind referred to wherein a reinforcing bar is provided within the frame member on at least one side of an openable light, and handle means on the inside of the openable light operable to extend a bolt member from said side into engagement with a keep within the frame member and secured to the reinforcing bar.
There may be reinforcing bars and keeps within frame members on opposite sides of the openable light, the handle means then being operable to extend a pair of bolts from opposite sides of the light into the two keeps respectively.
The handle means may be of the "Cockspur" variety having a tongue which overlies the frame member adjacent the handle when in the locked position.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, one form of window embodying same.
Of the drawings :
Figure 1 shows an external elevation of the
window;
Figure 2 shows an internal elevation of the
window; and Figure 3 shows an elevation of the working
parts of the window lock.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2 it will be seen that the window generally indicated at 10 comprises a rectangular frame comprised by opposed side members 11 and 12 and upper and lower cross-members 13 and 14 respectively. The frame is divided by a transom 15.
The lower part of the frame contains a fixed light 16 and the upper part of the frame contains an openable fan-light 17 hingedly connected by its upper edge to the cross-member 13.
The fan-light 17 has a lower frame part 18 which mounts on its inner face a locking handle 19 of the
Cockspur kind having a tongue 20 generally at right angles to the handle itself, and which overlies the transom 15 to secure the fan-light 17 when the handle 19 is in a locked position.
In accordance with the invention the handle 19 is modified by provision of a rearwardly directed spigot (not shown) which engages with the centre of a lever 21 such that the lever turns clockwise and anti-clockwise (as seen in Figure 3) with locking and unlocking movements of the handle 19 respectively.
Rods 22 and 23 are pivotally connected to the opposite ends of the lever 21 and extend to the left and right (as seen in Figure 3) respectively to connect with bolt members 24 and 25.
The parts 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 are housed within the frame part 18, but it will be understood that movement of handle 19 to the locked position will cause the bolt members 24 and 25 to extend outwardly from the ends of the part 18.
When so extended the bolt members 24 and 25 are received within keeps 26 and 27 securely fixed to bars 28 and 29.
The keep 26 and bar 28 are located within the frame member 12 and the keep 27 and bar 29 are located within the frame member 11.
The bars 28 and 29 extend over substantially the entire height of the members 11 and 12 making it virtually impossible to displace them by application of heat to the window at least with any ordinarily available and readily transportable means or by means or force applied by a wrecking bar or similar.
When the fan-light 17 is locked it is held not only by the bolts 24 and 25 but also by the tongue 20 on the handle 19 making very secure.
The fan-light is released at all three points simply by turning the handle 19 to its unlocked position.
Additional security may be had by providing a key lock to the handle 19.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
Thus the invention may be applied to any kind of opening light including patio windows or doors. The bolt member may extend from upper and lower frame members instead of opposed sides of a horizontal frame member.
Claims (9)
1. A window of the kind referred having a reinforcing bar within the frame on at least one side of an openable light, and handle means on the inside of the openable light operable to extend a bolt member from said side into engagement with a keep within the frame and secured to the reinforcing bar.
2. A window according to claim 1, including a further reinforcing bar and keep within the frame on the opposite side of said light, the handle means being operable to extend a pair of bolts from opposite sides of the light into the two keeps respectively.
3. A window according to either claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the handle means is rotatable to turn a lever in one direction to extend said bolt or bolts into locking engagement with the keep or keeps and in the other direction to retract said bolt or bolts from locking engagement with the keep or keeps.
4. A window according to claim 3, wherein she or each bolt is connected with said lever by a rod pivotally connected to said lever.
5. A window according to claim 4, wherein there are two bolt members and two rods pivotally connected to opposite ends of said lever which is connected with said handle means for turning movement about an axis intermediate said opposite ends.
6. A window according to any preceding claim, wherein said handle means is of the "Cockspur" variety having a tongue which overlies the frame adjacent the handle when in its locked position.
7. A window according to any preceding claim, wherein the or each reinforcing bar extends over substantially the entire length of the frame member in which it is located.
8. A window according to any preceding claim, wherein the or each reinforcing bar is located within a vertical frame member.
9. A window according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the or each reinforcing bar is located within a horizontal frame member. t
