Abstract
This unit is installed in a vehicle to provide the means whereby the air pressure within the spare tyre can be tested and adjusted from a remote valve mounted in any convenient position on the vehicle. The unit comprises a remotely mounted valve (a) connected via tubing (b) to an adapter (c) which connects releasably to the valve on the spare wheel which may be located in or below the vehicle boot. <IMAGE>
Description
REMOTE SPARE WHEEL PRESSURE CHECKING FACILITY
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO THE MAINTENANCE OF THE SPARE WHEEL CARRIED IN
A MOTOR VEHICLE.
IN THE MAJORITY OF MODERN CARS, THE SPARE WHEEL IS STORED IN A COMPARTMENT
IN THE BASE OF THE BOOT, OVER WHICH IS PLACED A BOARD, FORMING THE WORKING
FLOOR OF THE BOOT. CONSEQUENTLY IF ACCESS TO THE SPARE WHEEL IS REQUIRED,
IT IS NECESSARY TO EMPTY THE CONTENTS OF THE BOOT, AND REMOVE THE BOARD.
SINCE THIS CAN BE INCONVENIENT FOR THE ORDINARY MOTORIST, AND FRUSTRATING
TO SOMEONE WHO, BY THE NATURE OF HIS BUSINESS CARRIES GOODS, THE REGULAR
MAINTENANCE OF THE SPARE WHEEL IS OFTEN IGNORED. IT IS ALSO THE CASE THAT
IN SOME VEHICLES, THE SPARE WHEEL IS STORED IN A CRADLE BENEATH THE FLOOR,
WHICH NECESSITATES THE RELEASE OF THE CRADLE TO ALLOW THE TYRE PRESSURE TO
BE CHECKED.
THIS INVENTION PROVIDES THE FACILITY WHEREBY THE AIR PRESSURE WITHIN THE
SPARE TYRE OF A VEHICLE CAN BE TESTED AND ADJUSTED, REMOTELY FROM THE SPARE
WHEEL ITSELF.
THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY MEANS OF A REMOTELY MOUNTED "SCHRADER" TYPE VALVE,
WHICH IS RELEASABLY CONNECTED TO THE SPARE WHEEL VALVE VIA TUBING AND AN
ADAPTER. THIS VALVE CAN BE MOUNTED IN ANY CONVENIENT POSITION ON THE VEHICLE
TO ALLOW EASY ACCESS. THE ADAPTER IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A PRESSURE-TIGHT
SEAL AGAINST THE BODY OF THE TYRE VALVE, AND ALSO OPEN THE VALVE TO ALLOW THE
AIR TO PASS FREELY INTO AND OUT OF THE TYRE, ONLY ALONG THE TUBING. THIS
IS A SIMILAR ADAPTER TO THAT COMMONLY USED FOR THE INFLATION OF BICYCLE
TYRES. THE TUBING CAN BE ANY COMBINATION OF RIGID AND FLEXIBLE TYPES,
WHICH ARE CAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING THE REQUIRED PRESSURES.
IN FIGURES 1 TO 3, THE LETTERS INDICATE:a) THE REMOTE SCHRADER VALVE b) THE AIR TUBING c) THE VALVE ADAPTER
FIGURE 1 ILLUSTRATES A TYPICAL INSTALLATION WHERE THE SPARE WHEEL IS STORED
IN A WELL, IN THE FLOOR OF THE BOOT OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS USUALLY COVERED
BY A BOARD, WHICH IS NOT SHOWN.
FIGURE 2 ILLUSTRATES THE BASIC CONSTRUCTION OF THE UNIT.
FIGURE 3 ILLUSTRATES A TYPICAL INSTALLATION WHERE THE SPARE WHEEL IS STORED
IN A CRADLE BENEATH THE VEHICLE, COMMON IN MANY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES.
IN USE, THE INSTALLATION AS SHOWN ALLOWS THE PRESSURE WITHIN THE SPARE WHEEL
TO BE TESTED FROM THE REMOTE VALVE USING A TYRE PRESSURE GAUGE, AND IF
NECESSARY INFLATED USING A COMPRESSED AIR LINE OF THE TYPE COMMONLY FOUND IN
GARAGES AND PETROL STATIONS.
Claims (2)
1. A REMOTELY MOUNTED VALVE COMPRISING A SCHRADER TYPE VALVE CONNECTED
VIA AN AIRTIGHT TUBING TO AN ADAPTER WHICH ATTACHES RELEASABLY TO THE VALVE
OF THE VEHICLE'S SPARE WHEEL.
2. A REMOTELY MOUNTED VALVE AS CLAIMED IN CLAIM 1, THE VALVE OF WHICH
CAN BE MOUNTED IN ANY POSITION ON THE VEHICLE TO ALLOW EASY ACCESS FOR THE
PURPOSE OF TESTING, AND IF REQUIRED, ADJUSTING THE AIR PRESSURE WITHIN THE
SPARE TYRE.
