Abstract

Apparatus for connection between a tyre on a stowed vehicle spare wheel and a location such as the exterior of the vehicle body or the vehicle cab comprises a first attachment (1) connectable to the valve of the tyre, a second attachment (2) securable to the vehicle and a tube (6) connecting the two in fluid flow communication. The second attachment (2) includes a valve which enables the tyre pressure to be measured and which may be used to inflate the tyre. Tyre pressure indicating or low pressure warning means may be incorporated in the second attachment. The tube (6) may be rigid, flexible or elastic. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus This invention relates to apparatus for measuring pressure in a pneumatictyre, such as a spare automobile tyre, at a point remote from the tyre.
Spare automobile tyres are commonly stored in inaccessible positions on the automobile, for example underneath the chassis or in a compartment situated at the bottom of the luggage compartment.
It is often inconvenient to remove the tyre or otherwise gain access to iton order to measure the pressure therein to ensure that it meets with legal requirements. Such inconvenience may occur for example, when the luggage compartment is filled with luggage. It is an object of the present invention to overcome the need to gain access to a pneumatic tyre in orderto measure the pressure therein.
According to the present invention an apparatus comprises a first attachment securable in use to a pneumatic valve of a pneumatic tyre, a second attachment securable in use to an automobile said second attachment incorporating a pneumatic valve, and a tube communicating between said attachments.
The second attachment is preferably provided with a pneumatic valve which is compatible with the attachment of a compressed air line which may be used to inflate the tyre. The second attachment is preferably arranged with the pneumatic valve disposed on the exterior of the body of the automobile.
In use, the first attachment is secured to the pneumatic valve of the tyre and the pressure in the latter may be measured from the valve disposed on the exterior of the automobile body. The tyre may also be inflated through the latter valve.
The said tube may comprise a flexible or rigid hose, a metal pipe or an elastic hose as may be convenient.
The second attachment may incorporate a pressure sensitive means which serves to give an indication of the pressure within the tyre or serves to give an indication when the latter pressure falls below a predetermined value.
The invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates diagrammatically a preferred embodiment of the invention.
The apparatus comprises a first attachment, which incorporates a screw fitting by which the attachment may be secured to the thread on a pneumatic tyre valve. The second attachment 2 incorporates a valve 3 similar to that of a pneumatic tyre and compatible with an air line which may be used to inflate the tyre.
The second attachment 2 is illustrated located in an aperture in the body 5 of an automobile. A back plate or locking unit 4 secures the attachment 2 to the body 5. A flexible hose 6 extends between the attachments 1,2, the first attachment being disposed in the spare wheel storage cavity of the automobile and the second attachment being located at any convenient point on the exterior of the bodywork.
The second attachment may alternatively be located on the interior of the automobile, for example within the boot or within the driver's cab.
The external valve 3 of the second attachment may be provided with a removable dust cap.
The tube 6 may be elasticated to accommodate different distances between the attachments 1,2, which may be required for use in different automobiles.
CLAIMS (Filed on 7 Aug 1982) 1. Apparatus comprising a first attachment securable in use to a pneumatic valve of a pneumatic tyre, a second attachment securable in use to an automobile, said second attachment incorporating a pneumatic valve, and a tube communicating between said attachments.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second attachment is provided with a pneumatic valve which is compatible with the attachment of a compressed air line which may be used to inflate the tyre.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein the second attachment is arranged with the pneumatic valve disposed on the exterior of the body of the automobile.
4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1,2 or 3 wherein the tube comprises a flexible or rigid hose, a metal pipe or an elastic hose.
5. Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, the second attachment incorporates a pressure sensitive means which serves to give an indication of the pressure within the tyre or serves to give an indication when the latter pressure falls below a predetermined value.
6. Apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
