Description

Display-Mounting Device.
The present invention relates to apparatus for mounting wall-hangings.
In the simplest form of wall-mounting, a picture, poster or the like, is pasted or pinned directly to the wall.
Where the appearance of the mounting surface is of little importance, then there is no reason not to use such techniques. However, if appearance is important, or the picture is framed, then it is generally desirable to employ some mounting means allowing easy remoual of the picture without an undue effect on the mounting surface.
Accompanying Figure A illustrates the most commonly employed method for hanging a picture. The picture is mounted on the wall by means of string 4, attached to frame 1 and suspended on hook 2 located on the wall.
Carrier fitting 3, also located on the wall, may be used to further secure the picture.
The disadvantages of the prior art are manifold. For example, when the picture is remoued, a discoloured patch tends to be left, impairing the appearance of the wall surface. The hook and the carrier fittings leave unsightly marks on the wall. The carrier fittings, especially, are awkward to locate accurately, and leaue unsightly traces, especially if a smaller picture is subsequently mounted in the same spot. Adjusting the length of the support string is often difficult and the result unsatisfactory, and if carrier fittings are not used, then the merest of knocks can put the picture skew.
Some, or all, of the above disaduantages are ouercome by the present inuention.
Thus, the present invention provides display mounting apparatus comprising locating means locatable at the back of a picture to be hung, and in such a position as to impede relative lateral or longitudinal movement between the picture and the display surface.
The locating means of the invention usefully comprises rigid points such as a pin, or pins, or rubbery protrusions located on the back of the base of the frame of the picture to be hung. These act against the wall to prevent swinging of the picture. The pins may be made to work more effectively by gentle pressure into the wall, whilst the rubbery protrusions work by friction. It will be apparent that the rubber to be used should preferably be one that does not leave marks on the wall.
As used herein, the term "picture" relates to any suitable hanging to which the apparatus of the invention can be applied. The term "wall" is used to refer to any suitable display surface upon which such pictures may be displayed.
It will be appreciated that the apparatus of the invention considerably facilitates the horizontal positioning of a picture (e.g. photograph, calligraph, portrait etc.), whilst leaving no unsightly marks on the wall.
fiduantageously, the apparatus of the invention also prouides a linked string, or chain, as supporting line (4 of Fig ). The links can then be placed over a wall hook, giving easy control of the forward tilt of the picture.
According to a further aspect of the invention, the apparatus comprises an elongate member adapted for attachment to the back of a suitable picture. The locating means, e.g. pin, is suitably located at the bottom of the member. The member may be located in the middle of a picture, but it is preferable to use two such members, attached to the back of the frame at either side of the picture, for greater stablilty.
Suitable holes in the member may be provided to allow attachment by screws or nails, whilst notches along the length of the member allow attachment of the supporting line.
Where such notches are used, they should preferably be provided so as to face forwards, assisting engagement of the supporting line. To allow easy attachment of the line, rings may be prouided on which the string may be located, the rings engaging with the notches.
Should it be required, the elongate member, or members, can be made extensible so as to conform to a wide uariety of picture sizes.
In an alternative embodiment, there is prouided an apparatus according to the invention comprising an elongate member, adapted to hang on a wall, the locating means being located on adjacent horizontal extensions.
The elongate member of this emb Wime-nt-l awhilst being adapted to hag on a wall, may be modified in any sneitableXmanner as described for the preuious embodiment.
The horizontal extensions are suitably twin arms which preferably fold away for storage. It is possible to secure this form of the apparatus to the back of the picture, but it is generally preferable to be able to use the apparatus for different pictures. Thus, picture securing means are aduantageously provided on the extensions to support the picture when hanging. Such means may substantially correspond to traditional carrier fittings. Siternatively, any other suitable securing means may be provided.
n securing means and/or the locating means, which may both be prouided in one unit, are suitably mouably located on the extensions. The extensions themselues, as with the elongate member, may also be extendible.
The extension will now be illustrated in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fiq. 1 is a front view of a frame (picture) posting apparatus having ari inverted T-letter shape.
