Abstract
A pallet (1) comprises a composite upper load-carrying floor mounted on blocks (2) to enable uplift of the pallet by a fork-lift truck, the blocks (2) being joined by lower strips (3) to strengthen the structure. The composite upper floor (5) includes a rectangular base (4) of strips 4A, 4B with a top floorboard (not shown) mounted thereon, and the floorboard has its upper surface provided with a non-slip characteristic e.g. by grooving. The floor preferably overhangs the sides of the blocks (2) and the parts of the pallet are preferably made of suitable wood. <IMAGE>
Description
'PALLET' Descreetion.
The present invention relates to pal lets.
Pallets are well known devices facilitating the transport of goods from place to place. Fundamentally a pallet comprises spacer members, bottom (and possibly-top) joined strips connecting the spacer members and a top load carrying floor (especially in the form of planks) supported by the spacer members. Conventionally all the parts of the pallet are of wood and joining of the pallet parts is conveniently achieved by nails. The pallet design is such as to facilitate lifting of the pallet by a fork lift truck, and by having the spacer members comprised both longitudinal and lateral spaced block arrays, entry is possible to all sides of the pallet by the forks of the fork lift truck.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved pallet of the above type.
According to the present invention a pallet comprises an upper load-carrying floor construction mounted on spacer members, preferably in the form of spacer blocks, said floor construction including a base of strips arranged in a rectangular pattern. Preferably an outer floor panel is mounted on said base.
The present invention is also a pallet including an upper load-carrying floor construction having a nonslip outer surface. More especially the non-slip surface is formed by grooves on the outer surface. Preferably the grooves are produced by a pressing operation on said outer surface.
Preferably the load-carrying floor construction overhangs the spacer members at the sides of the pallet.
Preferably the spacer members are mounted on a bottom base comprising strips arranged in a rectangular pattern.
Preferably the strip base comprises longitudinal and lateral strips which overlie common spacer members at sides of the pallet.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 shows a pictoral view of a pallet in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, but with the top floor panel removed.
Figs. 2 and 3A show front and side views of the panel, while Fig. 38 shows a detail of Fig. 3A to a larger scale;
Fig. 4 shows a pictorial view of the complete panel; and
Figs. 5 - 8 show similar views to Figs 1 to 4 but in respect of a second embodiment.
Referring to Figs. 1 - 4, a pallet 1 comprises a longitudinal and lateral array of spacer blocks 2, each longitudinal array of blocks 2 being secured to a longitudinal strip 3 while a rectangular base frame 4 of a loadcarrying floor 5 (Fig. 4) is secured to the top of the blocks 2. The base frame 4 is formed by longitudinal strips 4A and transverse strips 48 located at the ends of the frame 4 and also centrally as shown in Fig. 1.
The strips 4A, 48 overlie common blocks 2 at the sides of the pallet as seen in Fig. 1. The strips 48 conveniently have substantially the width of the blocks 2 (square in plan) on which they lie, and the width of the strips 4A can be the same as that of the strips 48.
The floor 5 additionally includes a top panel 6 secured to the base 4. All the parts 2 - 6 of the pallet 1 are made of wood; the top and bottom strip parts 3, 4 can be made of softwood or hardwood but the blocks 2 are preferably of hardwood. The various parts can he secured together in a conventional manner by nails but the panel 6 could be secured to the base 4 by adhesives.
The double layer construction of the top floor 5 gives increased strength and durability and the floor 5 overhangs the blocks 2 at the pallet sides as can be clearly seen in Fig. 2. This overhang is advantageous in the handling of certain goods, for example assists the holding of the wrapping in cling-wrap packaging and gives a larger carrying floor area without significant increase in bending stress loading in the floor, in comparison to prior art pallets where no such overhang is present. Further when the pallet is uplifted by a fork lift truck with the forks inserted into the pallet from one side, the frame 4 will shield the top panel 6 from damage by the forks.
Further it is a particular feature of the pallet 1 that the upper surface 6A of the floor panel 6 has a nonslip characteristic. This non-slip characteristic is preferably achieved by providing grooves 7 on the surface 6A as shown in Fig. 38. These grooves 7 can be economically achieved by a simple pressing operation on the upper surface 6A using a suitable pressing tool. By way of example the pressing tool could include a metallic mesh panel structure, and grooving could be applied conveniently to two wood panels 6 by sandwiching the metallic mesh panel between the wood panels 6 (say prior to pallet assembly) and applying opposite pressures on the panels 6. The panel 6 is preferably made of scots pine or like wood and the frame 4 serving to shield the panel 6 as described above would preferably be of a harder wood.
The provision of the non-slip surface 6A encourages the safe support of goods on the pallet 1.
As will be evident from Fig. 1, the forks of a fork lift truck can enter between spaced blocks 2 on all four sides of the pallet 1.
The pallet 1 shown in Figs. 5 to 8 is similar to that shown in the Figs. 1 to 4 embodiment but in this case a peripheral strip base 8 is provided at the bottom of the pallet in place of the spaced parallel strips 3 of the previous embodiment. The strip base 8 comprises longitudinal strips 8A and lateral strips 88. Again the outer floor surface 6A is of non-slip grooved form.
