Abstract

A bolt action rifle whore primary extraction would normally require mechanical assistance has the bolt handle able to pivot about the bolt and impinge upon a stationary feature of the rifle or the receiver, (eg. the body) camming the entire bolt in a rearwards direction. Subsequently the entire bolt assembly is pulled rearwards freeing an unfired cartridge or a fired cartridge case from the rifle. <IMAGE>

Description

BOLT MOTION RIFLE WITH CAMMING BOLT HANDLE This invention relates to a bolt action rifle where the bolt handle itself moves in a camming action.
Bolt action rifles are well known achieving unlocking of the action from rotation of the rigid bolt. Prior to, during, or immediately subsequent to unlock primary extraction of the cartridge case is achieved by some form of calming action taking place due to the movement of the bolt or the bolt carrier stem whilst rotating.
Primary extraction is introduced into a rifle where normally initial extractinn can be expected to require mechanical assistance.
Bolt action rifles requiring primary extraction in their various forms are relatively complex, expensive and slow to operate.
According to the present invention primary extraction is independant of or or carrier rotation being effected by the bolt handle able to rotate in a plane at ninety degrees to the plane of unlocking rotation a face of the handle impinging upon a substantial aspect of the rifle body or receiver drawing the bolt stem rearwards.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure I shows the rifle in plan view with the rotational movement possible by the bolt handle subsequent to unlock indicated; Figure 2 shows the end elevation of the rifle from the rear indicating the bolt handles plane of rotation subsequent to unlock.
The rifle is chambered for the 5.56x45mm cartridge. Locking is achieved with a multi-lug rotating bolt. To extract an unfired cartridge or a fired cartridge came the bolt handle is rotated in a plane at ninety degrees to the rifle barrel centreline until the bolt reaches a stop whereupon the bolt luge are out of alignment with the corresponding barrel extension lugs. At this point primary extraction is achieved by pulling the bolt handle rearwards whereupon it Divots about the bolt stem roar, the other end of the handle camming against the rifle body introducing a rearward movement to the bolt.
Subsequently the entire bolt assembly is pulled rearwards freeing the cartridge or case from the rifle.

Claims (3)

  1. CLAIt1.
I A bolt action rifle whereby rrimary extraction is acheived by rotation of the boit handle about the bolt stem such that the handle impinges upon a stationary aspect of the rifle camming the entire bolt in a rearwards direction.
  2. 2 A bolt action rifle as claimed in Claim I where the primary extraction takes place after unlock rotation by the bolt handle pivoting against the rifle body.
  3. 3 A bolt action rifle substantially as described herein with reference to Figures I and 2 of the accomranying drawing.
