Abstract

The separation of a mixture of the halogenides of hafnium and zirconium is effected by fractional distillation by adding a halogenide of an element of the fifth or sixth groups of the periodic classification such as phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, molybdenum or tungsten whose highest valency is five or six, and distilling the mixture. The separation in this manner of the mixed chlorides is described, phosphorus pentachloride being the reagent added. A fraction rich in hafnium is distilled over at 230-360 DEG C. and a fraction rich in zirconium at 360-410 DEG C. If these separated fractions which contain phosphorus chloride or oxychloride are treated with water phosphates are obtained, or oxides may be produced by treating the fractions with a base.
