A signal generating unit 1 produces a coded electrical signal which is applied to a control unit 2. The insertion of a unique electronically coded card 3 in a slot 4 in the control unit causes it to respond and energise the ignition circuit 6 and liquid crystal displays 10 of the vehicle registration number on the front and rear number plates 7 and 8. The security system can be applied to other electrical apparatus such as a television set, a video recorder, a hi-fi system or a music centre. <IMAGE>
Description
A security system for electrical apparatus
This invention relates to a security system for electrical apparatus and particularly though not exclusively to a security system for the electrical circuits of a motor vehicle.
Every year thousands of motor vehicles are stolen by thieves who break into the vehicle and tamper with the ignition circuit to enable them to drive the vehicle away. Apart from the loss and inconvenience to the owner of the motor vehicle the many thefts of vehicle result in increases in insurance premiums for all vehicle owners. Moreover, much expensive electrical apparatus such as television sets, video decks and music centres have become the target of thieves, since such apparatus seems to find a ready market once it has been stolen..
It is an object of this invention to provide a security system for electrical apparatus which will render the apparatus inoperable by a thief and thus act as a deterrent to a thief.
According to the present invention a security system for an electrical apparatus comprises a signal generating circuit arranged to apply an electrical signal to a control circuit arranged to respond when a unique code is entered therein, and on receipt of such a code to render the otherwise inoperable electrical apparatus operable.
Preferably the unique code is entered in the control circuit by inserting an electrically coded card.
The electrical apparatus which is rendered operable by the control circuit may be the ignition circuit of a motor vehicle and/or apparatus for displaying the registration number of a motor vehicle.
When the apparatus which is rendered operable by the control circuit is apparatus for displaying the registration number of the vehicle it may include a liquid crystal display device.
The electrical apparatus which is rendered operable by the control circuit may also be a television receiver, a video deck for recording television programmes, a so-called hi-fi apparatus or a music centre.
The signal generating circuit and the control circuit may comprise integrated circuits or so-called micro-chips.
The signal generating circuit may be arranged to apply a unique pulse coded signal to the control circuit which may be arranged to respond only when an identical code is entered therein.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a block schematic diagram of an electrical
circuit of a motor vehicle embodying the invention; and
Figure 2 is a block schematic diagram of an electrical
circuit of a television set embodying the invention.
Referring in the first instance to Figure 1, an electrical apparatus of a motor vehicle is provided with a security system comprising a signal generating unit 1 arranged to apply an electrical signal to a control unit 2. The signal generating unit 1 which comprises an integrated circuit or so-called micro-chip produces a coded electrical signal in the form of a train of pulses indicative of the registration number of the motor vehicle and applies them to the control unit 2.
An electronically coded card 3 unique to the motor vehicle and indicative of the registration number of the motor vehicle is arranged to be inserted in a slot 4 in the control unit 2. The control unit 2, with which the electronically coded card 3 co-operates comprises an integrated circuit or so-called micro-chip. On the insertion of the uniquely coded card 3 the control unit 2 responds and energises the ignition circuit 6 of the motor vehicle to start its engine. At the same time the control unit 2 responds and energises the electrical circuit of the front number plate 7 of the vehicle and the electrical circuit of the rear number plate 8 of the vehicle both of which incorporate liquid crystal display device 10 showing the registration number of the vehicle.
It is an advantage of the embodiment of the invention shown in
Figure 1 that if the vehicle is broken into it could not be started without the uniquely coded card 3. Thus a thief not in possession of the coded card 3 would be thwarted. If a thief did manage to tamper with and by-pass the ignition circuit then it would be clear to the police that the car had been stolen since without the insertion of the uniquely coded card 3 the registration number of the vehicle would not be displayed by the display devices 10. When the vehicle is parked the tax disc shows the registration number of the vehicle for the benefit of traffic wardens or the police.
It is envisaged that the security system would be installed by the motor vehicle manufacturer who would be allocated a block of registration numbers and would issue the uniquely coded card 3 with the vehicle when it is sold. No other card would be able to be used to start the vehicle thus ensuring that the system was virtually thief-proof. While it is preferable that the front and rear number plates 7 and 8 should be liquid crystal display devices 10, it will be appreciated that other forms of display device are not precluded from the invention.
Turning now to Figure 2 which illustrates the invention applied to a television set comprising a signal generating unit 11 arranged to apply an electrical signal to a control unit 12. The signal generating unit 11 which comprises an integrated circuit or so-called micro-chip produces a coded electrical signal in the form of a train of pulses indicative of the manufacturer's serial number of the television set anl applies them to the control unit 12.
An electronically coded card 13 unique to the television set and indicative of the manufacturer's serial number is arranged to be inserted in a slot 14 in the control unit 12. On the insertion of the uniquely coded card 13 the control unit 12 responds and renders the electrical circuit 16 of the television set fully operative so that programmes can be received. When the television set is not in use, for example, when the owner is away on holiday, removal of the uniquely coded card 13 ensures that the television set cannot be operated. A potential thief would therefore be discouraged from stealing the television set.
It is envisaged that the security system would be installed in the television set by the manufacturer who would issue the uniquely coded card 3 with the television set when it is sold. The control unit 12 would be arranged to immobilize several stages of the electrical circuit 16 of the set thus making it extremely difficult to circumvent the security system.
It will be appreciated that the security system of the invention is eminently applicable to many other types of electrical apparatus, for example, video decks, hi-fi systems and music centres and can readily be applied to them for protection against potential thieves.
Also while the security systems in both the illustrated embodiments comprises several separate distinct stages it will be appreciated that two or more of these stages may be provided by one complex integrated circuit.
