Description
1 - 2 2, 17 5 3 0' Branch Terminal for Electric Conductors This invention
relates to a branch terminal for electric conductors.
A known branch terminal is shown in West German Utility Model 1 827 863 and comprises a clamping jaw, an opposed clamping jaw and a clamping screw clamping the two clamping jaws together. One side of the clamping jaws is a contact surface for the main conductor, respectively. The opposed clamping j-aw has a contact surface in the form of a cylindrical blind hole, the axis thereof being perpendicular to the main conductor. The blind hole accommodates the branch conductor which can be electrically connected to the opposed clamping jaw through a contact screw. In the clamping position the two clamping jaws support one another. To connect the main conductor and the branch conductor separate screws are used and corresponding threaded holes are provided.
The preferred embodiments of the present invention provide an improvement in known branch terminal, so that an additional thredded hole and the connecting screw for the branch conductor are not necessary.
According to the present invention there is provided a branch terminal for electric conductors, comprising: a firs t clamping jaw having a contact surface for the main conductor and a contact channel 1 for the branch conductor; a second clamping jaw having a contact surface for the main conductor; and clamping means for clamping the clamping jaws onto the-main conductor wherein the contact channel for the branch' conductor is arranged in the first clamping jaw so as to allow the end of a clamping screw to enter the contact channel to clamp the branch conductor in position, and wherein the clamping means comprises the clamping screw and a clamping nut which acts on the second clamping jaw and is screwed on the clamping screw.
With the branch terminal according to the invention the provision of an additional threaded hole for the connecting screw of the branch conductor as well as the connecting screw itself is prevented, while the previous advantages, for example independent clamping of main and branch conductors are maintained.
The invention will be better understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, given by way of example only, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein the single Figure is a side view of an embodiment of branch terminal according to the invention.
The branch shown in the drawing terminal 1 comprises a clamping jaw 2, an opposed clamping jaw 3 and a clamping screw 4.
The clamping jaw 2 has a contact surface 5 for a mainconductor 6. As a main conductor bare or insulated conductors having a circular or segmental cross-section can be used. The main conductor 6 as shown is a conductor having a segmental cross-section, no insulation being represented. Thus, as contact surface 5 parallel longitudinal cutting edges 7 are provided, a groove 8 being sandwiched inbetween. The contact surface 5 of the clamping jaw 2 is disposed 1 3 1 2.5 on the left side of the center plane y-y.
As can be seen, the contact surface 5 in the form of the longitudinal cutting edges 7 is configured so as to allow contact with the main conductor 6 of different sizes. The longitudinal cutting edges 7 cut through the external insulation of the respective main conductor 6 and thus the electrical connection to the metal core of the conductor 6 is established.
Furthermore, the clamping jaw 2 is provided with a contact channel 9 for a branch conductor (not shown). The contact channel 9 is preferably configured to be a cylindrical.hole 10; the axis of this hole 10 is parallel to the longitudinal cutting edges 7 and is arranged to be in the center plane y-y; it preferably accommodates branch conductors having skinned ends and a circular cross-section.
It is also possible to provide a blind hole (not shown), with the center axis being perpendicular to the longitudinal cutting edges and being open towards the right end of the clamping jaw 2. Thus it is possible to connect the branch conductor perpehdicular to the main conductor.
The clamping screw 4 is inserted with its end 11 into the contact channel 9 and establishes the electrical connection to the branch conductor inserted. For this purpose the clamping screw 4 is screwed into a threaded hole 12 of the clamping jaw 2.
The end 11 of the clamping screw 4 could also be provided with a socalled milling cutter so as to allow the electrical connection to a branch conductor core having an external insulation when being introduced.
At its upper surface the clamping jaw 2 comprises an abutment surface 13 verging into a torus 14. The right end of the opposed clamping jaw 3 is a tapered end portion 15 with an arched end surface 16.
This end surface 16 of the end portion 15 is supported by the abutment surface 13 of the clamping jaw 2, the torus 14 preventing a lateral yielding and torsion of the end portion 15..
At the left side of the clamping jaw 2 a contact surface 17 for the main conductor 6 is provided. This contact surface 17 is preferably formed by two parallel longitudinal cutting edges 18, with a groove 19 being sandwiched inbetween. The longitudinal cutting edges 18 of the opposed clamping jaw 3 are substantially in alignment with the longitudinal cutting edges 7 of the clamping jaw 2. They are symmetrical to the center plane x-x between the parallel longitudinal cutting edges 7, 18. The latter can also be toothed.
Instead of the longitudinal edges 7, 18 contact surfaces 5, 17 in the form of circular segmental surfaces could be provided for bare conductors as well.
The clamping screw 4 has a polygonal, preferably quadrangular head 20. Thus, it can be tightened by means of a tool, such as a wrench. By driving the clamping screw 4 into the threaded hole 12 the connection of the end 11 to the branch conductor in the contact channel is established.
In addition, a nut 21 is screwed on the clamping screw 4 by a wrench wih preferably hexagonal surfaces. Between the nut 21 and the upper surface 22 of the opposed clamping jaw 3 a washer 23 is provided, the upper surface 24 being level and the bottom surface 25 having an arch-type form corresponding to the upper surface 22 of the opposed clamping jaw 3. By tightening the nut 21 the opposed clamping jaw 3 is pressed against the clamping jaw 2, the longitudinal cutting edges 7, 18 digging into the main conductor 6.
wa J As can be seen, the main conductor 6 and the branch conductor can independently and successively be introduced into the branch terminal 1 and then be connected.
Furthermore, the opposed clamping jaw 3 provided with an elongated hole 26 allowing the introduction of the clamping screw 4, the elongated hole 26 being disposed-at right angle to the longitudinal axis of the contact channel 9. Thus, the opposed clamping jaw 3 can adapt itself to different conductor cross-sections.
