Description
2215989 ELECTRICAL APPARATUS FOR BOILING EGGS OR THE LIKE
This Specification relates to an electrical apparatus to boil eggs or like foodstuffs.
Presently, eggs are boiled by means of immersion of same in a pot of water to be put on a flame. This procedure, in spite of its broad use, presents some drawbacks, among which may be mentioned the waste of cooking gas, the compulsory utilisation of a stove, and the need to control the boiling time until the eggs are cooked to the desired degree.
The waste of gas is due to the fact that a quantity of water in excess of that necessary in put into the pot in order to boil the eggs, thereby resulting in a very great calorific loss and, requiring a longer heating up time in compensation.
The obligatory use of a stove creates the inconvenience that the place where the eggs are boiled is always different from that of their consumption, so that the user is forced to perform the boiling prior to going to the table to eat.
The control of the boiling time for the eggs is a function of the quantity of water used to heat up the eggs, a procedure generally highly inexact.
The apparatus specifically described by way of illustration hereafter is suitable to boil eggs or the like close to the table during the user's eating, and 2 eliminates the need to control the boiling time for the eggs by using a predetermined volume of water.
The invention provides electrical apparatus for boiling eggs or like foodstuffs comprising a container for water to be boiled, a pair of electrodes in said container spaced vertically from one another for ohmic heating in use of water in the container occupying the volume between the electrodes, an openable cover closing the container, means for venting steam from the container, and means for supporting at least one egg within the apparatus for boiling. The electric apparatus to boil eggs or the like, preferably comprises a basic body made from electrically and thermally insulating material, in the shape of a mug closed at the upper end by a concave lid provided with an upper vapour releasing orifice, said mug incorporating inside and adjacent to its bottom wall at least one orthogonal projection. On the bottom wall's internal face and on said orthogonal projection are fixed electrolytic plates maintained horizontally in parallel and spaced from each other, each of them being electrically connected to one of the contact poles of an electric cord. Between the mug and the concave lid a supporting plate is adapted and provided with a plurality of apertures for insertion and support of eggs or the like, the minimum water level necessary for energisation of the apparatus being defined by the horizontal plane which contains the upper electrolytic plate.
Hereinafter an example of the present invention is 0,5 described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is an elevational view cut off partially of the electric apparatus of the invention; and Figure 2 is an orthogonal section of the apparatus depicted in Figure 1.
According to these drawings, the electric apparatus to boil--eggs or the like comprises a basic body, preferably made of electrically and thermally insulating material, in the form of a tankard or mug 1 with a bottom wall 2 located horizontally at half the total height of mug 1, which bottom wall 2 incorporates a tubular orthogonal projection 2a turned to the interior of mug 1.
Inside the mug 1 there is secured a first electrolytic plate or electrode 3a close to the internal face of bottom wall 2, by means of a set of screws and nuts 4, and a second electrolytic plate or electrode 3b is secured on to the tubular orthogonal projection 2a by means of a screw 5 passing therethrough and a butterfly nut 5a, so that the electrolytic plates 3a and 3b are maintained 4 horizontal and parallel and spaced with respect each other. Each of the electrolytic plates 3a and 3b has a circular shape slightly smaller than the bottom wall 2 of mug 1, each of them being connected electrically through respective screws 4-5 to one of the terminals of an electric cord 6 to be plugged into a power outlet of the electric network.
The upper edge of mug 1 comprises a horizontal annular skirt 7 on which seats a supporting plate 8, of circular shape and slightly smaller than the diameter of the upper edge of the mug 1, said supporting plate 8 being provided with at least four circular apertures 8a into which are inserted and within which are sustained the eggs 20 to be boiled, and five round apertures 8b of smaller diameter through which steam passes to the cooking chamber itself.
Mug 1 is closed at the top by a lid 9 of concave shape, so defining said cooking chamber, with a lower circular skirt 9a of a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the upper edge of mug 1, so as to fit on the horizontal annular skirt 7, which is retained between the upper edge of mug 1 and the lower edge 9a of the lid 9. This lid 9 includes an aperture 9b at its top, which allows the escape of the water as steam as boiling takes place.
With this arrangement the apparatus functions automatically, and promotes the boiling by vaporisation of the water, of eggs 20 fitted on the supporting plate 8. The heating up of the water is effected by the electrical discharge that occurs by the electrical contact between the two electrolytic plates 3a, 3b through the water itself.
The electrolytic plates 3a and 3b are provided with a number of holes F, placed accordingly to figures 3a and 3b, to allow better penetration and distribution of water to electroyltic plates 3a and 3b.
Although not-depicted, on the body of the mug 1 there may be made a mark indicative of the maximum level of water to be filled in the apparatus, as a guidance to the user, for instance, a maximum water volume equivalent to six soup spoon measures.
As the water is heated up, vaporisation of same occurs, thereby boiling the eggs 20 arranged over the water and the diminution of the water level from the initial point previously chosen to the minimum level N1, cancels the electric contact between plates 3a, 3b and disconnects the apparatus automatically.
