Abstract

The mirror assembly is positioned, approximately in the centre, at the top of the vehicles passenger door window. It is secured in place with the fixing mechanism item 'D'. The mirror head is then adjusted about the swivel joint 'C' to give the driver a good view of the road ahead on the passenger side. When the mirror head is set the swivel joint is locked in position. <IMAGE>

Description

AUTOMOTIVE FORWARD VIEWING OVERTAKING MIRROR This invention relates to an automotive forward viewing overtaking mirror.
It is normal for a right hand drive vehicle to be driven on the left hand side of the road and a left hand drive vehicle to be driven on the right hand side of the road.
When attempting to overtake under these conditions a driver can usually obtain a good view of the road ahead past the obstruction. If, however, a right hand drive vehicle is being driven on the right hand side of the road (e.g. a British vehicle on the Continent) or a left hand drive vehicle is being driven on the left hand side of the road, it is not possible for the driver to obtain a view past the obstruction without pulling out in a dangerous manner.
Under the latter conditions a forward viewing mirror mounted in a specific position, as indicated in figs. 1 and 2, would give the driver an initial view past the obstruction, enabling him to pull out safely. Existing automotive mirrors however do not lend themselves to be mounted in this unique way.
According to the present invention there is provided an automotive forward viewing overtaking mirror comprising a mirror head, a mounting arm, a locking swivel joint allowing the position of the mirror head to be adjusted and locked into position, and a fixing mechanism to secure the assembly to the vehicle. The whole being designed in such a way as to enable it to be mounted in a unique position at the top of the vehicles passenger door window with the mirror head giving the driver a forward view.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 illustrates the position of the mirror and the view given to the driver, past an obstruction, when a right hand drive vehicle is being driven on the right hand side of the road.
Figure 2 illustrates the position of the mirror and the view given to the driver, past an obstruction, when a left hand drive vehicle is being driven on the left hand side of the road.
Figure 3 shows the mirror in front elevation.
Figure 4 shows the mirror in plan.
Figure 5 shows the precise fixing position of the mirror.
Referring to the drawings, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the mirror comprises a mirror head 'A' which is fixed to the mounting arm 1B' via a locking swivel joint 'C?, and a fixing mechanism 'D'.
The mirror assembly is positioned, approximately in the centre, at the top of the vehicles passenger door window (as illustrated in Fig 5). It is secured in place with the fixing mechanism, either of a clamp type, clamping onto the door upper channel section, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 item tD', or alternatively a screw type fixing. The mirror head 'A' is then adjusted about the swivel joint 'C' to give the driver a view of the road ahead on the passenger side (approx. 450) as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Tyhen the mirror head is set, the swivel joint is locked in position by a threaded nut or similar means.
