Abstract

A golf ball is provided with a plurality of dimples (10). Each dimple is of non-arcuate (rectangular or polygonal) shape when viewed from above (Figure 1) and of arcuate (part-spherical or part-ellipsoid) configuration when viewed in section (Figure 2). The non-arcuate shape facilitates the provision of a uniform land distance between adjacent dimples and enhances the aerodynamic properties of the ball. The arcuate oonfiguration facilitates cleaning and assists in maintaining the appearance of the ball. <IMAGE>

Description

GOLF BALL DIMPLE PATTERN This invention relates to dimple patterns for golf balls and in particular to the relationship between dimple shape, dimple cross-sectional configuration and the spatial arrangement of dimples on a golf ball.
It is well knows to provide dimples or other discontinuities on the outer surface of a golf ball in order to minimise aerodynamic drag when the ball is in play. It is also well known that a uniform spatial arrangement (hereinafter "land-distance") between adjacent dimples can contribute to the reduction of aerodvnaaic drag and that this uniform land-distance can be most conveniently achieved When the dimples are of non-arcuate (e.g. rectangular or polygonal) shape.
However, previous known attempts to provide such non -arcuate dimples have resulted in dimples whose cross-sectional configuration is likewise non-arcuate. Although such known dimples do make a contribution to the aerodynamic performance of the ball, they rapidly become dirty and are moreover ver difficult to clean. lets, golf balls having dimples of non -arcuate plan view and non-arcuate cross-sectional configuration have not hitherto been accepted by players.
We We have now found that the provision of dimples having a non-arcuate plan view and an arcuate cross-sectional configuration combines the advantages of uniform spatial arrangement, maximum reduction of aerodynamic drag and improved appearance of a golf ball.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a golf ball having a plurality of dimples in its spherical outer surface, in which each dimple is of non-arcuate plan view and arcuate cross-sectional configuration.
Preferably, the dimples may be uniformly spatially arranged over the surface of the ball.
The present invention also provides a golf ball as described in the immediately-preceding paragraph, in which the land-distance (as hereinbefore defined) between adjacent dimples is constant.
The dimples may be rectangular, triangular or polygonal in plan view.
The arcuate cross-sectional configuration of the dimples may conveniently be that of a solid of revolution generated by the rotation of a plane curve about a radius of the ball. For example, the configuration of the dimples may be that of a part-sphere or part -ellipsoid.
The present invention will be illustrated, merely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a single dimple on a golf ball according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a section on line II-II of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on Line III-III of Figure 1.
The dimple 10 is of generally square plan view, having sides whose length is in the range 2mm to 5mm.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the dimple 10 has a generally arcuate cross-sectional configuration with an average depth in the range O.lmm to 0.3mm.
