Description

A BUE1PER The invention relates to a bumper, particularly a bumper for a motor vehicle.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided an auxiliary bumper for mounting on a vehicle, comprising means to mount the bumper from within an internal compartment of the vehicle.
The means may comprise mounting plates projecting from the bumper towards the internal compartment, and the plates mav be adapted to co-operate with mounting means within the internal compartment.
The internal compartment may be an engine compartment of the vehicle.
The bumper may include a part for housing an existing bumper of a vehicle.
The bumper may also include a part for housing a light array of the vehicle. The light arrav housing part may comprise a concave part constructed so as to permit light to emanate from the light array.
The bumper may be formed from metal tube.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a set of parts comprising a bumper as hereinbefore defined and a support device adapted for mounting in an internal compartment of a vehicle, the bumper and support device being assemblable to support the bumper on the vehicle.
The support device may comprise an in use horizontal bar for mounting in the internal compartment and having projecting means for securing with the mounting means of the bumper.
There may be two projecting means.
The two projecting means may diverge from the horizontal bar.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle including a bumper as hereinbefore defined or erected from a set of parts as hereinbefore defined.
The bumper may be a front bumper of the vehicle.
A bumper, and a set of parts including the bumper, are hereinafter described bv way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a bumper according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the bumper of Fig. 1: Fig. o is a perspective view of a support device for the bumper; Fig. 4 is a section on line X-X of Fig. 3, showing part of the bumper, which bumper and support device are assembled; Fig. 5 is an elevational view of part of the bumper of Fig. 1; and Fig. t is a perspective view of a vehicle mounting a bumper according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings, there is shorn a bumper 1. ar. auxiliary front bumper in the embodiment shown, for mounting on a vehicle 2, comprising means 3 to mount the bumper 1 from within an internal compartment of the vehicle 2.
The bumper 1 is made of metal tube, having a main horizontal part 4 formed as by bending back on itself at each end te form two concave parts 5 each of which forms a housing for a respective light cluster or array 6 of the vehicle, the free ends of the tube being secured to the horizontal part 4 as by welding. Secured to the horizontal part 4 is a part 7 formed by tubes & which house an existing bumper 13 of the vehicle 2, the horizontal part 4 lying in use along an upper edge of the existing bumper 13.
The tubes 8, 9 have free ends secured as by welding to upright parts 14 which terminate in securing means such as plates or flats 15 of L-shape for securing to the chassis of the vehicle. The posts 14 are connected by a strut 16, which serves to rigidify the whole structure. The tubes 11, 12 sweep between the horizontal part 4 and the tubes 8, 9.
The tube 10 rigidly connects the tubes 8, 9, and there is a similar tube 10 connecting the parts 5.
The support device 1 comprises a horizontal (in use rod or bar 18 having projecting splayed or diverging struts or arms 15). and end securing means 20 with an open slot, the securing means 20 each comprising a bracket projecting in the opposite direction to the struts 1Q.
In use to mount the bumper 1 on the front of a vehicle 2. the securing device 1 is mounted in the engine compartment. in front of the radiator and behind the grille. The securing device 1; is mounted by nuts and bolts co-operating with the brackets 90 and slots. The struts 10 pass through and out of the grille. The bumper 1 is then offered up to the venice. so the respective parts 5. 5 and 7 house the light arrays b and existing bumper if.
and the upright posts 14 locate under the existing bumper 1 and the flats or plates 15 are secured to chassis txpe mounting points on the vehicle. The mounting means or flats 3 and the stavs 1G are then secured together using nuts and bolts 21. The bumper 1 is then secured in position. It can readily be dismounted by a reverse sequence of operations.
It will be understood that the various flats and plates have suitable through apertures for receiving nuts and bolts. Also although tubes have been referred to, they can be replaced by suitable rigid members.
