Abstract
A grilling appliance comprises a base (1) with a vertically extending elongate heating element (5) and with rotatable vertical food pins (3). In order to reduce the warm-up time of the heating element and to prevent food items from being burnt, the heat element is constituted by a short-wave infrared radiator (5) arranged in an outer envelope (6). The outer envelope (6) is provided with a filter for filtering out a part of the visible spectrum. <IMAGE>
Description
GRILLING APPLIANCE
DESCRIPTION
The invention relates to a grilling appliance comprising a base with a vertically extending elongate heating element and with rotatable vertical food pins.
Such a grilling appliance is known from GB-A-1,598,620. In this appliance the heating element is constituted by a medium wave infrared metal radiator. Such a radiator heats up slowly. Moreover, when fitting a food pin into or removing it from the base the food on the food pin may come into contact with the heating element, so that the food may be burnt locally, which gives rise to an unpleasant scorching smell.
It is the object of the invention to mitigate the above disadvantages.
To this end the grilling appliance in accordance with the invention is characterized in that the heating element is constituted by a short-wave infrared radiator arranged in an outer envelope and in that means are provided for filtering out a part of the visible spectrum emitted by the radiator.
As used herein the terms 'short-wave infrared radiator and 'medium-wave infrared radiator' should be understood to mean radiators for which between approximately 50 and 60 per cent of the output radiation lies in the ranges 800nm to 1400nm (IR-A) and 1400nm to 3000nm (IR-B), respectively.
A short-wave infrared radiator has a very short warm-up time.
The outer envelope remains comparatively cool, so that if food comes into contact with the outer envelope it will not be burnt and produce an unpleasant smell. The outer envelope is easy to clean. Since such radiators emit too much light it is necessary to filter out a part of the visible spectrum. Preferably, the filter means are arranged on the outer envelope.
A further embodiment of the grilling appliance is characterized in that the base is provided with a socket and the radiator is provided with a corresponding contact sleeve. Thus, the heating element can be fitted into or removed from the base in the same way as a lard.
An eslxtlanent of the invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example, with reference to the sole Figure of the accompanying drawing.
The grilling appliance comprises a base 1, which accommodates an electric motor and a reduction mechanism, not shown. The reduction mechanism comprises a plurality of outgoing hollow sockets 2 into which the ends of the food pins 3 can be plugged. The pins holding the food items extend vertically and rotate slowly about their axes.
The sockets 2 are disposed on an imaginary circle in a recess 4 of the base. A vertically extending elongate heating element can be arranged in the centre of the imaginary circle. The heating element is constituted by a short-wave infrared radiator 5 accommodated in an outer envelope 6. The radiator is provided with a contact sleeve 7 and the base has a corresponding socket 8. The contact sleeve and the socket may be formed, for example, with screw-thread. However, a bayonet lock is also possible.
The heating element 5 is provided with filter means for filtering out a part of the visible spectrum, so that the light which is emitted is not annoying to the user. Preferably, the outer envelope is provided with such a filter. The filter may be any suitable conventional filter and may be capable of filtering out any particular desired part of the visible spectrum. Normally, the filter is arranged to filter out part of the visible spectrum so that the heating element 5 appears red in operation of the appliance. The actual radiator comprises a filament 9 made of, for example, tungsten, which is arranged in an inner envelope 10. The radiator is filled with an inert gas, for example argon or nitrogen, to which a small amount of halogen (Br) has been added.
Claims (4)
