Description
A BRACKET
This invention relates to a bracket.
Display boards for use in presentations or boards for use as separators in open plan offices need to be connected together, as required, by suitable means e.g.
by brackets. In order to arrange the boards for the display or the office, it is frequently necessary to provide several different types of brackets. These different brackets enable the boards to be arranged as desired.
However, the fact that several different brackets have to be used means that it is often necessary to decide on the arrangement beforehand and to order the brackets for that particular arrangement. Thus, it would be difficult to alter the arrangement for a particular set of brackets. Furthermore, the need to use several different types of bracket increases the cost.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved bracket.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a bracket for supporting a board comprising a first substantially planar portion and a second substantially planar portion, said first and second portions being adapted to engage the board or a further bracket, the first portion being defined by a boundary whereby the second portion extends beyond a boundary line perpendicular to the second portion and passing through the boundary and beyond which no part of the first portion projects, sp that the first portion of the further bracket can be disposed adjacent the corresponding first portion of the further bracket with the second portion of the bracket overlapping the corresponding second portion of the further bracket, and the bracket can be secured to the further bracket at the second portions.
In one embodiment of the invention, the first and second portions are of a uniform thickness, and each of the first and second portions comprises an inwardly facing surface and an outwardly facing surface A first point may be defined on the first portion which is spaced from the inwardly facing surface of the second portion by a first u-is;;taIica and a second point mey be defined on t.e second portion which is spaced from the inwardly facing surface of the first portion by said first distance A first plane perpendicular to the first and second portions and passing through the first point is. spaced from a second plane parallel to the first plane and passing through the second point by a second distance which is substantially equal to or greater than said first distance.
The first and second points may be spaced from the outwardly facing surface of the second and first portions respectively by a distance which is substantially equal to the sum of the first distance and the thickness of the respective portion.
Part of the periphery of the second portion may be curved in plan such that the curvature extends beyond said boundary line. The curvature may comprise an arc of circle which preferably extends greater than iSO0. The arc may have a radius of substantially equal to or less than said first distance.
Preferably, the chord of the arc which is disposed in, and is parallel to, the second plane defines a semi-circle.
The first and second portions may comprise first and second zones respectively at which the bracket can be secured to a further bracket or to the board. The first and second zones may be disposed respectively in the region of the first and second points.
The first and second zones preferably define apertures in which securing means may be disposed. The securing means may comprise a bolt, adapted to be received in the aperture, and a nut threadably received on the bolt to secure the bracket. The apertures may be circular.
The periphery of the first portion may be substalltially rectangular in configuration and is preferably substantially square in configuration.
In the preferred embodiment, the first portion is substantially square in configuration and the second portion is attached to one side of the square, and is.
disposed substantially perpendicular thereto. In this embodiment, the first point is. disposed in the centre of the square at said first distance from each side of the square and the aperture in which the securing means can be disposed is defined by the first portion so that the first point is substantially at the centre of the aperture. Also, in the preferred embodiment the second portion is substantially of a teardrop configuration, the second point is disposed within said arc of the circle and an aperture in which the securing means can be disposed is. defined by the second portion so that the second point is subs,tantially at the centre of the aperture.
The arc of the circle of the second portion may be attached at one end thereof to a first corner of the square comprising the first portion, and a line from the other end of the arc and tangential thereto may pass through a second corner of said square adjacent the first corner. Said line preferably defines the second portion.
The board to be secured to the bracket may have an aperture to receive the bolt. The aperture in the board may be substantially circular and may have a diameter which is substantially equal to the sum of the diameter of the aperture in the first or second portion when said aperture is circular and s,ubs,tantially half the thickness of the first or second portion. This permits assembly of brackets in accordance with the invention in various; configurations using the same holes, as it gives enough play between the bolts and apertures to permit satisfactory alignment.
According to another aspect of this; invention there is provided a bracket ar0:nbly comprising at least two brackets as described above wherein each bracket is secured with the first or second point thereof in register with the first or second point of the other bracket. The brackets may be the same or they may be mirror images.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is; a representation of a bracket according to this invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of two brackets; according to this invention;
Figure 3 is a view along the lines,III-III in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a view along the lines; IV-IV in Figure 2;
Figures; 6 to 12 are diagrams of brackets; according to this invention in use secured to boards.
Referring to the drawings, a bracket used to attach boards, for example display boards, together is shown, generally designated 10. The bracket 10 comprises; a first portion 12 of substantially square configuration and a second portion 14 which is attached to the first portion 12 as shown, and is disposed substantially perpendicular thereto. The first and second portions 12, 14 are of a substantially uniform thickness, t.
The first portion 12 is defined by a boundary 16 whereby the second portion extends beyond a boundary line perpendicular to the second portion and passing through the boundary 16 whereby no part of the first portion 12 projects beyond the boundary line. The boundary line is, indicated by the dotted line des,ignated A.
The second portion 14 comprises, a curvature 15 which extends, beyond the boundary line A.
The firs,t portion 14 comprises an inwardly facing surface 18 and an outwardly facing surface 20.
Similarly, the second portion 14 defines; an inwardly facing surface 22 and an outwardly facing surface 24.
A first point 26 is defined on the first portion 12.
The first point 26 is a first distance away from the inwardly facing surface 22 of the second portion 14, as indicated by the double headed arrow of length R. The first point 26 is alsp the firs,t distance R from the other sides of the square In addition, the first point 26 is spaced from the outwardly facing surface 24 of the second portion 14 by a second distance which is, equal to the sum of tFe first distance R and the thickness, t of the second portion 14.
A second point 28 is; defined on the second portion 14. The second point 28 is, spaced from the inwardly facing surface 18 of the first portion .12 by a distance which is substantially equal to the first distance R. In addition, the second point 28 is, spaced from the outwardly facing surface 20 of the first portion 12 by the second distance.
The curvature 15 of the s,econd portion 14 is in the form of an arc of a circle which extends more than 1800.
One end of the arc of the circle starts at a corner 30 of the first portion 12. A line from the other end of the arc of the circle passes through the corner 32 adjacent the corner 30 to define the second portion. The second portion 14 is, thus, of a teardrop configuration. The radius of the arc of the circle is substantially equal to the first distance R.
A first plane (not shown) perpendicular to the first and second portions 12, 14 and passing through the first point 26 is, spaced a distance which is, substantially equal to the second distance from a second plane (not shown) parallel thereto and pas,s,ing through the second point 28.
The first and second portions, 12 14 comprise zcne at which the bracket can be secured to a further bracket or to a board, The zones are defined by apertures, 34, 36 which can receive securing means in the form of a bolt (not shown). The bolt can pass. through a corresponding aperture in the board or in a further brachet and a nut can be threadably received thereon.
Figures. 2 to 4 show two brackets, 10, 10'; bracket 10' being the mirror image of bracket 10. The securing means to secure the brackets 10, 10' together have been omitted for clarity.
In Figures 5 to 12 various arrangements. of brackets are shown in which the brackets, are used to attach display boards. together in different configuration,;
Figure 5 shows two brackets 10, 10' secured together at their respective second portions 14, 14' by securing means (not shown). The brackets, 10, 10' are used to secure together two vertical boards, 100, 100' by securing means (not shown).
Figure 6 shows a bracket 10' secured at the first portion 12' thereof to a base member 102 by securing means (not shown). The bracket 10' is alsp secured at the second portion 14' to a board 100 by securing means (not shown).
In Figure 7 two horizontal boards; 100, 100' are shown attached together by two brackets 10, 10'. The brackets 10, lOL are secured to each other at their respective second portions 14, 14', and each bracket 10, 10' is. s,ecured to a respective board 100, 100' at the first portions 12, 12' of the brackets 10, 10'.
Figure 8 shows a bracket 10 attached at the second portion 14 thereof to a vertical board 100. The bracket 10 is supported at the first portion 12 by a support member 110.
The bracket 10 shown in Figure 9 is; securing vertical board 100 to a horizontal -board 100'. The vertical board 100 is secured to the second portion 14 of the bracket 10 and the horizontal board 100' is secured to the first portion 12 of the bracket 10.
Figure 10 shows two boards; 100, 100' secured together at the corner 120 by two brackets; 10, 10'.
Figure 11 shows four horizontal boards 100, 100', 100'' and 100''' secured by four brackets. 10, 10' 10'' and 10'''.
Figure 12, shows four brackets 10, 10', 10'' and 10''' secured together in order to attach four boards; thereto 50, 50' , 50' ' and 50' ' ' . The brackets; are arranged so that the four first points 28, 28', 28'' and 28''' are arranged to form subs.ta.ntially a cube with the first portions of the brackets.
The embodiment of this; invention described above has; the advantage that it is possible to attach a number of boards together in several different configurations,. This allows an assembly of boards; to be set up using a bracket as described above and as; shown in figure 1 and, if necessary, its mirror image. In addition, it also enables the arrangement of boards; to be altered as; desired without the need to obtain different brackets, and using the same attachment holes, of dimensions as aforesaid.
The centres of the attachment holes; are all positioned at the same distance from the adjacent edges; of the boards.
