Abstract

A pair of micro channel plates mounted with an insulated space between them, is used as an electron shutter by applying appropriate potentials thereto, e.g. in a camera tube. <IMAGE>

Description

MICRO CHANNEL PLATES AS ELECTRONIC SHUTTER (GATE) This invention relates to electronic camera and electronic beam shuttering by the use of micro channel plates.
The shuttering or gating of electron beams is used in many types of vacuum tube electronic devices in particular electronic cameras, where a beam of electrons is act! ated or interrupted by an electrical means, and a micro channel plate is used as an amplifier of the beam of electrons. This particular method of using micro channel plates is able to shutter or gate up to very high speeds typically 30 x 1012 seconds.
Accordingly the present invention consists of two micro channel plates separated by a small insulated space, and an electric field applied across this space, by suitable applied potentials shuttering action takes place.
Fig. 1 shows a cross section view of a typical electron tube device with reference to the drawing, the two micro channel plates are mounted in close proximity. Fig. 2 is an enlarged portion of a segment of Fig. 1.
Operation is as follows. A potential is applied across 11-12 such that the micro channel plates operate in the usual way with the surface 12 at a positive potential with respect to surface 11. A second potential is applied to surfaces 13 and 14 such that the potential at surface 13 is more negative than 12, the electron flow is therefore inhibited. If the potential at the surfaces 12 and 13 is changed such that 13 is more positive than 12, electron flow commences, by applying appropriate potentials shuttering action therefore takes place.
The electronic connection configuration may be of any pattern, thereby shuttering different sections of the micro channel plates and therefore controlling the electron beam, or image formation.

Claims (3)

1. The shuttering of an electron beam by appropriate potentials to two micro channel plates separated by a small distance typically up to 1 mm.
2. The shuttering of an electron beam as claim 1 by any number of electrodes on the surfaces of the micro channel plates and controlable with different potentials.
3. The shuttering of an electron beam as claim 1 and claim 2 by using the micro channel plates shutter as a cathode as source of electrons.
