Description

A CORNER ASSEMBLY DEVICE FOR CONNECTING PANELS This invention relates to a device for connecting panels at an angle in a corner assembly in which the end faces of the panels are spaced apart and the panel corners are overlaid by a buffer element and in particular but not exclusively for connecting panels substantially at right angles to each other.
It is known to provide a right angle corner assembly for connecting panels in which adjacent end faces of the panels are concealed by an overlay or flashing such as a right angle channel member. It is also desirable in certain applications such as in shop fitting furniture to provide a buffer at the corner assembly to protect the assembly from impact and to cushion the corner to avoid accidental injury to customers.
According to the present invention there is disclosed a device for connecting panels at an angle in a corner assembly in which the respective end faces of the panels are spaced from the axis of intersection of the planes of the panel outer faces, the device comprising a connecting plate extending diagonally between the panels, fixing means for fixing end portions of the connecting plate to the respective panels at locations spaced from the end faces, a buffer element comprising first and second formations receiving first and second end portions respectively of the panels and a wall portion extending continuously between the first and second formations, an intermediate plate extending between the first and second formations so as to lie generally parallel to the plate intermediate the connecting plate and the wall portion, first and second edge portions of the intermediate plate being located in first and second locating means provided in the buffer element adjacent the first and second formations respectively and tension means operable to bias the intermediate plate and the connecting plate towards each otner whereby the buffer element is frictionally retained against axial movement.
Preferably the buffer element is an extrusion of plastics material such as rigid PVC (polyvinyl chloride).
Advantageously the wall portion has an external surface which is continuous with the external surfaces of tne first and second formations respectively.
Preferably the wall portion is arcuate in cross section to thereby provide a rounded buffer of the corner assembly.
Conveniently the tension means comprises screw means such as a plurality of screw fittings being spaced apart with respect to the intersection axis.
Conveniently the fixing means comprise screw fasteners.
Preferably the formations comprise U shaped channel formations and the locating means comprise slots.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is disclosed a method of connecting panels at an angle in a corner assembly in which the respective end faces of the panels are spaced from the axis of intersection of the planes of the panel outer faces, which method comprises the steps of connecting the panels by means of a connecting plate extending diagonally between the panels and fixing end portions of the connectioning plate to the respective panels at locations spaced from the end faces, axially sliding a buffer element into engagement with the end portions of the panels such that first and second channel formations of the buffer element receive the first and second end portions respectively and a wall portion of the buffer element extends continuously between the first and second channel formations, the buffer element having an intermediate plate extending between the first and second channel formations so as to lie generally parallel to the connecting plate intermediate the connecting plate and the wail portion, the first and second edge portions of the intermediate plate being located in first and second slot formations provided in the buffer element adjacent tne first and second channel formations respectively, and biasing the intermediate plate and the connecting plate towards each other by means of tension means such that the buffer element is frictionally retained against axial movement.
A particular embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing of which Figure 1 shows a sectional plan view of a corner assembly in which two vertical panels are connected.
In Figure 1 first and second panels 1 and 2 respectively are formed from pressed mild steel, each being pressed to provide hollow end portions 3 and 4 respectively with first and second end faces 5 and 6 respectively.
The panels are disposed at right angles to each other such that the planes of the panel outer faces 7 and 8 intersect at an axis 9, the end faces 5 and 6 being equispaced from the axis.
The panels 1 and 2 are connected by a connecting plate 10 which extends diagonally therebetween and includes end portions 11 and 12 which are fastened to the panels 1 and 2 by screw fittings.
A buffer element 13 of extruded PVC includes a wall portion 14 of arcuate cross section which provides a rounded corner buffer extending between the panels 1 and 2.
At each end of the wall portion 14, first and second channel formations 15 and 16 are intergally formed and receive tne end portions 3 and 4 respectively such that the external surface of the wail portion is continious with the external portions 17 and 18 of the channel formations 15 and 16 respectively.
An intermediate plate 19 extends between the first and second channel formations 15 and 16 and is received in first and second slots 20 and 21 respectively which are formed in axially extending ribs 22 and 23 formed integrally with the channel formations 15 and 16.
A number of axially spaced threaded holes 24 are provided in the intermediate plate 19 and complimentary holes 25 are provided in the connecting plate 10 to receive screws 26 engageable with the threaded holes.
The connecting plate 10, the intermediate plate 19 and the buffer element 13 are of equal height to the panels 1 and 2 and are conveniently produced in continuous lengths to be cut to length as required.
In use to assemble the device to form a corner assembly, the panels 1 and 2 are arranged at right angles as shown in Figure 1 and are connected by means of the connecting plate 10. The screw fittings are fitted and may conveniently be only partially tightened at this stage.
A length of buffer element 13 is prepared with its intermediate plate 19 inserted in the slots 20 and 21 to provide a buffer assembly which is then fitted onto the end portions 3 and 4 by sliding in an axial direction.
The screws 2t are inserted and tightened together with the screw fittings of the connecting plate 10.
In the embodiment shown the outer surface of the wall portion 14 includes axially extending projections 27 primarily for decorative purposes.
The resulting corner assembly has the advantage of being simple to assemble whilst providing enhanced rigidity by virtue of the tension maintained in the screws 26 resulting in a pre-stressed tubular structure which is inherently resistant to externally applied stresses.
The buffer element 13 may conveniently be coloured to any desired effect by suitable choice of PVC formulation and provides an effective buffer in which all screw fittings are concealed.
The device may also be constructed for use in corner assemblies which are not right angled for use in poLygonal structures which are other than four sided.
The device may be used with panels formed from materials other than metal such as wood, plastic or composite materials.
