Abstract

Lighting apparatus which may be worn on a person's head comprising a flexible band 10 with a lamp arrangement 12 mounted thereon. <IMAGE>

Description

Improvements in or relating to Lighting Apparatus This invention relates to lighting apparatus and particularly to lighting apparatus which may be worn on a persons head.
It has been known for a number of years to provide a light on helmets for persons such as miners.
Attempts have also been made to provide 8 light which can be worn on a person's head when the person is not wearing a helmet. However, such lights have generally been difficult to put on, have required adjustment for use by people with different head sizes, and are generally uncomfortable especially when a person is lying on his back, for example when working under a car.
According to the present invention there is provided lighting apparatus comprising a band of flexible material, the band being of a size and shape to partially surround and engage the head of a person in use, and a lamp arrangement mounted on the band.
Preferably the band is shaped so as to, in use, engage around the person's head immediately above the ears.
Preferably also the band is formed of a plastics material, and the lamp arrangement may be integrally formed therewith.
The lamp arrangement preferably includes bulb and battery holding means, and access means permitting replacement of the bulb and/or battery may be provided.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which shows a perspective view from the front and above of a light according to the invention.
The drawing shows a light which can be worn on a person's head. The light comprises a flexible band 10 and a lamp arrangement 12 mounted thereon. The band 10 is formed of a strip approximately 500 mm long and approximately 60 mm wide, and in a relaxed condition adopts a shape approximating to three quarters of the circumference of a circle. The band 10 may be made of, for example, a flexible plastics material.
The lamp arrangement 12 includes a bulb 14 mounted substantially centrally in a dish shaped reflector 16.
The reflector 16 is mounted in a casing 18 which has a substantially transparent front 20. The casing 18 is integrally formed with the band 10. A front 20 of the casing is hinged about one side 22 and is releasably held in a closed position by a catch 24. The casing is adapted to mount one or more batteries for electrical connection with the bulb 14.
In use, the free ends of the band 10 are pulled apart and the arrangement is slipped on to a person's head, with the band resting immediately above the person's ears. The band 10 substantially adopts the shape of the person's head. The lamp 12 is turned on when required using a switch (not shown) on the side of the casing 18. If the battery and/or bulb requires replacement, access can be obtained by opening the front 20 of the casing.
The above example thus describes a light which may be readily put on by a person irrespective of their head size. The apparatus is comfortable to wear as contact with the head is made over a relatively large area. The shape of the band means that the apparatus should not fall off during normal usage. As no part of the apparatus extends around the back of the persons head, the apparatus is comfortable to use when the head is resting against the floor, as for example when the person is working beneath a car. Also the apparatus is unlikely to be knocked off or damaged when a person is in such a position.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example the dimensions of the band could be different. The lamp arrangement may be made in a different form and could be detachable from the band. If required, the batteries could be carried elsewhere on the person and connected to the lamp by suitable wiring.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
