Abstract

A recessed plate (3) which can be securely positioned onto the final brick course of a manhole shaft (4) can accommodate a manhole cover (1) and frame (2) to reduce the risk of partial or total collapse of the manhole cover and frame. Subsequent plates can be used to bring the manhole cover and frame to new levels when the need arises i.e. resurfacing of the carriageway in either hot-rolled asphalt or dense bitumen macadam or concrete. Pre-cast holes (5) are made to facilitate ease of handling. <IMAGE>

Description

MANHOLE COVER & FRAME LIFTING PLATE This invention relates to a lifting plate for a Manhole cover and Frame.
Manholes are used to gain entry into foul and surface water sewers in order to carry out inspections or remedial works to the sewer.
The manhole cover and frame, once seated on the top brick course of the manhole shaft, is often prone to partial or total collapse which weakens the existing road surface and is a danger to road users. The manhole cover and frame also has to be raised, when resurfacing of the carriageway is to be carried out, to bring the cover and frame up to new finished levels.
According to the new invention there is provided a recessed plate shaped so that a manhole cover and frame can seat into it.
A lifting plate of the present invention will accomodate additional plates when required to alter the level of the manhole cover and frame in roads of hot rolled asphalt or dense bitumen macadam construction.
The plate having been positioned and secured on the top brick course of the manhole shaft by means of laying the plate on a bed of rapid setting mortar so that the hole in the middle of the plate coincides with the hole which constitutes the manhole shaft. The external dimensions of the plate are in excess of the dimensions of the manhole shaft thus enabling the traffic loading to be spread over a larger area not simply on the top brick course of the manhole shaft and thereby reducing the risk of partial or total collapse.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:- In figure 2 a manhole cover (1) fits into a manhole frame (2) which in turn sits on the ledge formed by the recessed plate (3) this in turn is bedded onto the top brick course of the manhole shaft (4). Ease of lifting is facilitated by means of cavities for lifting keys to be put intro.(5) The lifting plate of my invention is preferably of solid design and construction consisting of a grade 20 metaX advantageously fitted with precast holes into lfhich lifting keys are fitted to accomodate ease of handling.
In use, once the lifting plate has been securely positioned, for example by means of a full bed of rapid setting mortar spread to the required thickness, on the top brick course of a conventional manhole shaft, the manhole cover and frame is fitted into the recess in the upper face of the plate and permanent reinstatement of the carriageway can take place, thus anchoring the lifting plate and the manhole cover and frame firmly into the existing carriagewa.
When resurfacing of the carriageway eventually takes place on a road where the lifting plate of this invention has been used, the manhole cover and frame is first excavated, removed and set aside. Then if the road surface is hot rolled asphalt, an additional plate with a lip on its bottom face that is the same dimensions as the recess in the upper face of the first plate is fitted into the recess of the first lifting plate and the original manhole cover and frame is fitted back into the recess of the subsequent plate. The thickness of this subsequent plate is the same thickness of surfacing to be laid. Permanent reinstatement of the road surface can take place to new level to bring the surface up to new manhole cover and frame level to eliminate any danger to road users.
In the case of a dense bitumen macadam carriageway being resurfaced the additional plate is used in the same respect as described above but the plate is made of apportionately less thickness. To reduce weight and cost of the additional plates of this invention holes can be cast into them but this will not reduce the overall strength or efficiency.

Claims (1)

1)A recessed plate into which a manhole cover and frame can be seated to spread traffic loads which are applied to the manhole cover and frame.
The plate having first been bedded onto the top of the existing manhole shaft. The plate also having pre-cast holes to accomodate lifting kevs to enable ease of handling.
2)A lifting plate as claimed in claim 1 which will accomodate subsequent plates when required to alter the level of the manhole cover and frame in roads of hot rolled asphalt or dense bitumen macadam construction or of rigid construction (concrete).
3)A lifting plate as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 thick can be modified bt- means of size increase or reduction so that it can be used for anv type of ironlTork used on tle highway (gully or inspection chamber).
4)A lifting plate as claimed in claim 2 ts1lich has a tlickless relevant to the type of road surface being relaid.
5!A liftin~ plate as claimed in claim 1,,3 and 4 .1;icl. can be manufactured in either caSt or ductile iron.
