Abstract

A reflective road stud comprises a cylindrical reflector 16 supported by a resilient element 14 mounted in a cylindrical casing 10 together with an annular wiper means 24 which contacts the domed surface 18 of the reflector when the latter is displaced relative to the casing against the resilient element. The reflector is particularly useful at cross-roads or intersections because it is equally effective irrespective of the angle of approach. <IMAGE>

Description

REFLECTORS This invention relates to reflectors for use primarily in road surfaces for lane marking and like purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction which is particularly simple to manufacture and which is especially versatile in use.
According to the invention a road reflector comprises a casing a resilient element in the casing, a refleclor/lens supported by the resilient element and normally projectinc out of the casinc. and a wiper arrange to contact a surface of the reflector/lens when t ii e 1 a t t e r is displaced relative to the casin- avainst the resilient element and characterise in that the reflector/lens is substantially cylindrical where it projects from the casing, anc' the wiper is 2 rinr surrounding the cylinder.
The use of a cylindrical surface provides a reflector useful over a *3Dn degree angle about t taxis of the cyl incer and it will be appreciated that the cylinder is to be vertices to trie roi surface. Hence such a reflector is particularly useful at crossroads and intersections.
Preferably the reflector!lens has a domed upper surface. The cylinder may also have a peripheral radially outwardly extending flange at its lower end, and the external diameter of that lower end may be greater than the internal diameter of a mouth of the casing so as to ensure that the lens element is retained in the casing. The wiper ring will be located between the mouth of the casing and said flange.
According to a feature of the invention. the resilient element is provided by a block of elastomeric material such as a suitable rubber.
One presently preferred embodiment of the invention is now more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of 5 reflector and Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
The reflector shown in the drawing comprises a generally cylindrical metal casing 10 provided with an inturned flange 12 at its upper end to define a generally circular mouth. The casing may be provided with barbs or recesses or the like to facilitate it being keyed into a road surface.
The casing locates a cylindrical block of elastomeric material 14 which may be retained in the casing by any convenient means not showr,.
The casing supports a reflector/lens ich has a generally cylindrical portion 1E integral with a gently domed crown 18 at its upper end and with a radially outwardly extending flan 2, at its idler ni. Tne reflector element may be internally silvered or alternatively it may be formed with facets or prisms at least over the internal cylindric2ì arEa 22 and possibly also the underside of the crown 1 The space betueen the reflector and the casino et its upper end is filled with a shaped annular ring 24 of a suitable plastics material to form a wiper. The wiper is fixed in place in the casing for example by a crimping operation or with an adhesive.
In use, a small portion of the cylindrical surface projects above the road surface together with the gently domed top or crown. These reflect light, for example from the headlights of vehicles. It will be appreciated that because of the cylindrical shape provided by the invention, the reflector is not direction sensitive.
When a vehicle drives over the reflector the reflective element is depressed relative to the wiper so that the cylindrical surface is wiped.

Claims (5)

1. A road reflector comprising a casing, a resilient element in the casing, a reflector/lens supported by the resilient element and normally projecting out of the casing, and a wiper arrange to contact a surface of the reflector/lens when the latter is displaced relative to the casing against the resilient element, and characterised in that the reflector/lens is substantially cylindrical where it projects from the casing, and the wiper is a ring surrounding the cylinder.
2. A road reflector as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the reflector/lens has a domed upper surface.
3. A road reflector as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the cylindrical part is provided with a peripheral radially outwardly extending flange at its lower end and greater diameter than the internal diameter of a mouth of the casing, and with the wiper ring located between the mouth of the casing and said flange.
4. A road reflector as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the resilient element is a block of elastomeric material.
5. A road reflector substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
