Rod and bar feeds.-In mechanism for feeding wire or strip material, the motion of the feeding device is 'derived from an element which is carried by an oscillating member and adjustable along it by a second member, and having a motion compounded of movement along a curved path relatively to one member and along a straight path relatively to the other member. The length of feed is varied by the adjustment of the element by the second member and may be directly proportional to the movement of that member. Figs. 1 and 3 show mechanism for feeding a strip in a card-board box corner-staying machine. The motion of the feed-carriage 7 is derived, through link 8, pivoted arm 9 and link 12, from a block 13 mounted in a curved slot in a lever 5 oscillated about a pivot 6 by a rotating grooved cam 3 engaging a roller 4 on the lever. The pivot 12<1> of the block 13 carries a second block 14 engaging a straight groove 15 in one arm 16 of a bell-crank lever mounted on a pivot 17, the other end 18 of this lever being connected by a slot 19 and pin 20 to the anvil 21 of the machine. Angular adjustment of the bell-crank lever alters the position of the block 13 in the slot 5 thereby varying the stroke of the feedcarriage 7 and the parts may be so proportioned that the length of feed is proportional to the movement of the bell-crank lever. The slot 19 also may be so shaped that the angular movement of the lever arm 18 is proportional to the resilient movement of the anvil 21 so that adjustment of the anvil for boxes of different depths automatically changes the stroke of the carriage 7 to feed the requisite length of strip.
