Abstract
The panel holder consists of one or more extrusions which rigidly hold one or more panels of various materials such as glass or perspex. The inwards slope of the extrusion's outer flanges exerts a spring load against the material when it is forced between the inner and outer flanges and the inner flanges may be locally deformed to accommodate thinner materials and lessen the total amount of spring load applied against the material. <IMAGE>
Description
PANEL HOLDER
The present invention relates particularly but not solely to an extrusion, normally of aluminium, which rigidly holds one or more panels of various materials (normally glass or perspex) . The slight inwards slope of the extrusion's outer flanges (see Figure 1) exerts a spring load against the material when it is forced between the inner and outer flanges and allows for the use of different thicknesses of material
The extrusion may be locally deformed upon the inner flanges at each end and at intermediate points, if desired, in order to accomodate thinner materials and lessen the total amount of spring load applied against the material
A single length of extrusion may be used for nameplate or information signs and several extrusions may be used, among other things, for forming boxes, double-glazed windows or self assembly display cases (see Figure 2) . In the latter case the extrusion is anodized to a brass colour and the extrusion acts as an edge trim; as a right-angle panel holder; as a fastener and as a substitute for polished and lacquered brass angle
The novelty of this invention is that it reverses the roles of conventional structures, in which a metal frame is fabricated (or joined by corner connectors) to make a selfsupporting structure into which loose panels are affixed This invention provides for the inset panels to be integral structural members of the case and for the individual extrusions to become the sole fasteners . In addition, all parts of the case (panels and extrusions) may be shipped packed flat, as individual components, for assembly upon arrival
Claims (5)
- CLAIMS FOR PANEL HOLDER 1 The panel holder consists of one or more identical extrusions, normally of aluminium, which rigidly hold one or more panels of various materials, normally glass or perspex.The inwards slope of the extrusion's outer flanges exerts a spring load against the material when it is forced between the inner and outer flanges and allows for the use of different thicknesses of material as shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.
- 2 An extrusion, as claimed in Claim 1, in which the inner flanges are locally deformed at each end and/or at intermediate points, if desired, in order to accomodate thinner materials and lessen the total amount of spring load applied against the material.
- 3 An extrusion, as claimed in Claims 1 and 2, in which the extrusion is anodized or painted to simulate brass, gold or silver or to provide an alternative colour to aluminium.
- 4 An extrusion, as claimed in claims 1, 2 and 3, which may be used for information signs as shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.
- 5 Two or more extrusions, as claimed in Claims 1, 2 and 3, which may be used for forming boxes, double-glazed windows, display cases and other types of assembly as shown in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawing.
