Abstract

A tube 11 containing a compactible fibrous filter material 17 supplies air to the inlet manifold 12 downstream of the carburettor 13. The flow of air may be restricted by compacting the material 17 or controlled by a valve operated manually or dependence on mixture flow through the manifold. <IMAGE>

Description

METHOD AND DEVICE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE This invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine of the type having a carburettor and an inlet manifold and to a device therefor.
The invention comprises a method for operating an internal combustion engine having carburettor means supplying a fuel/air mixture into an inlet manifold comprising admitting air into said manifold downstream of said carburettor means.
Said air may be admitted through a restricted orifice and may be admitted just downstream of said carburettor means.
The air may be admitted at a rate dependent on flow rate of fuel/air mixture through the manifold.
The air may be admitted through a venturi section and may be filtered.
The invention also comprises an internal combustion engine performance modifying device comprising an air inlet attachment adapted for installation to an inlet manifold downstream of the carburettor means.
The device may comprise a threaded or threadable section for insertion into a drilled and tapped aperture in the manifold wall.
The device may comprise a venturi section inlet and also air filter means. The device may also comprise air admission adjustment means which may comprise a compactable filter plug e.g. of fibre material located in the inlet.
One embodiment of a device and a method according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which the single Figure is a cross section through a device shown in situ in an inlet manifold.
The Figure illustrates an internal combustion engine performance modifying device comprising an inlet attachment 11 adapted for installation to an inlet manifold 12 downstream of the carburettor means, partly shown at 13.
The device 11 has a threaded section 14 adapted to fit a drilled and tapped aperture 15 in the manifold 12 wall. Alternatively, the device can be made of soft material such as a plastics material which can be screwed into a hole tapped with any thread or can comprise a self rapping screw which taps into a simple based aperture 15.
The section 14, in any event, can be made so as to be cut or broken to a suitable length to fit different manifold designs, a convenient length being 2 inches or 5 cm.
The device comprises a venturi or bell section or flared inlet 16 filled with a compactable fibrous filter plug 17 which may be retained by a peened-over lip 18 of the inlet 16. The inlet aperture A is conveniently one inch or 2.5 cm.
The inlet may be controlled by valve means (not shown) which can be opened and closed manually or auto magically in accordance with e.g. a fuel consumption meter to optimise consumption.
In use, the device is fitted close to the carburettor 13 and the engine run to working temperature with the fibre plug initially uncompacted. Slight compacting pressure is applied as by finger pressure until the engine revs evenly. A faster than normal idling speed may then be adjusted by adjusting the carburettor slow running jet.
On engines with dual carburettors, one device can be fitted by each carburettor.
It has been found that when the device is fitted to automobile engines, fuel economies have been achieved in terms of miles per gallon or kilometers per litre.
At the same time, the engine appears to run better and cold start better.
The device may also be used to adapt an engine to different fuel grades including lead free.
