Abstract
A shoe heel or heel piece having a major portion (1) and a tip portion (2), both of plastics material, the tip portion being formed with a harder wearing plastics material than the plastics material of which the major portion is made. One portion, usually the major portion, is formed of a plastic with lower melting point than the other portion so that it can be moulded about it. <IMAGE>
Description
A SHOE HEEL OR HEEL PIECE
This invention relates to a shoe heel or heel piece.
Shoe heels and heel pieces are known which include a major portion which is made of a plastics material or leather and a metal tip portion or butt plate designed to protect against wear.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a shoe heel or heel piece comprising a first part constituting a major portion of the heel and a second part constituting a tip portion thereof, said first and second parts being made of a plastics material and being joined to one another and the material of said second part being more hard wearing than said first part.
One of the parts has a lower melting point than the other part so that said other part can be placed in a mould and said one part can be moulded about it without said other part losing its form so that the two parts become interlocked.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of making a shoe heel or heel piece, including the steps of forming a plastics tip portion of the heel or heel piece and moulding another plastics portion of the heel or heel piece about said tip portion, this other portion forming a major portion of the heel or heel piece and having a lower melting point than said tip portion so that, in the resulting heel or heel piece, said tip portion retains its form, is joined to said other portion and has an exposed surface constituting a comparatively hard wearing region.
The invention also extends to a heel or heel piece when made according to the method as just defined.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a heel or heel piece,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line II-II in
Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a plan view of a tip portion of the heel or heel piece before it has been joined to the remainder of the heel or heel piece shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The heel shown in the drawing includes a major portion 1 of a plastics material such as PVC and a tip portion 2 made of a plastics material such as polyurethane. The tip portion 2 is harder wearing than the portion 1 and has a higher melting point than the portion 1.
It will be seen that the tip portion 2 has ribbing 2A transversely of its length on the side that is intended to be in contact with the ground but the ribbing can instead extend longitudinally of the portion 2. The same side of the portion 1 is given a cross-hatched pattern. A rectangular, smooth panel can be provided in the cross-hatched region to allow insertion of a company name or the like.
Looking at the construction in more detail, it will be seen that the two portions are joined and interlocked with one another, the portion 1 extending underneath the portion 2 (on the side of the heel or heel piece that is intended to face away from the ground) and extends through three holes 2B in the portion 2 by means of corresponding posts 1A. The material of the portion 1 also extends through holes 4 in a ledge portion 2C which extends into the body of the portion 1 under its surface 1B.
In the present embodiment, this is achieved by first forming the tip portion 2 and placing it in a mould and then pouring the molten plastics material to form the portion 1 into the mould. Since this material has a lower melting point than the material of the portion 2 and as it is kept at a temperature which is close to its melting point, the tip portion 2 does not lose its form and the plastics material to form the portion 1 flows through the holes 2B and 4 in the portion 2. Of course, the mould is so arranged that the ribbed side of the tip portion 2 does not become covered with the material of the portion 1 so that it remains exposed. The result is a firm, interlocking join between the two portions. To enhance the joint between the two, the tip portion can be coated with a fine film of polyurethane solution prior to the moulding step, this solution acting as a glue.
The heel or heel piece is given a so-called "universal" shape and the material can be cut easily by a knife or mechanical nibbler and various possible lines of cut are shown in chain-dot lines and given the reference numerals 5, 6 and 7, respectively.
It will be appreciated that, by using PVC for the major portion 1 of the heel or heel piece, this portion is substantially non-marking and should not spread when weight is applied to it.
Claims (8)
1. A shoe heel or heel piece comprising a first part constituting a major portion of the heel and a second part constituting a tip portion thereof, said first and second parts being made of a plastics material and being joined to one another and the material of said second part being more hard wearing than said first part.
2. A shoe heel or heel piece according to claim 1, wherein one of the parts has a lower melting point than the other part so that said other part can be placed in a mould and said one part can be moulded about it without said other part losing its form so that the two parts become interlocked.
3. A shoe heel or heel piece according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said first part is made of PVC and said second part is made of polyurethane.
4. A shoe heel or heel piece, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
5. A method of making a shoe heel or heel piece, including the steps of forming a plastics tip portion of the heel or heel piece and moulding another plastics portion of the heel or heel piece about said tip portion, this other portion forming a major portion of the heel or heel piece and having a lower melting point than said tip portion so that, in the resulting heel or heel piece, said tip portion retains its form, is joined to said other portion and has an exposed surface constituting a comparatively hard wearing region.
6. A method of making a shoe heel or heel piece and including the step of applying a film of polyurethane solution between the two portions prior to moulding.
7. A method of making a shoe heel or heel piece, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
8. A heel or heel piece which has been made according to the method of claim 6 or 7.
