Description

- 1 FISHING REEL 2 '2 6. 5. 9 12 The invention relates to a fishing reel
of the kind having at least one line-gripping peg housed in a spool-cap which is movable, by depression of a press knob, between a restraining position in which the peg projects from the outer surface of the spool cap and a casting position in which the whole length of the peg is retracted into the spool cap, and means for detaching the spool cap from and re-attaching it to the fishing reel. With the line-gripping peg retracted into the spool cap, the fishing line can be cast. As a result of turning the winding handle the line-gripping peg springs out of the spool cap again and so the line can be reeled in again by operation of the winding handle by the angler.
In order to be able to get at the spool for winding the line, in order to insert it or exchange it, it is necessary to release the spool cap from the fishing reel. This occurs with the known arrangements in the following way. The spool cap is provided with a left-handed thread and through this it can be screwed on or off a corresponding thread of the connecting part. This manipulation in the first place is complicated and also it has continually caused problems, since the provision of a left-handed thread, which is necessary because of the direction of rotation during unwinding of the fishing line, is often overlooked by the user, i.e. it is falsely taken to be a right-handed thread. This results in the user turning the spool cap to the left relative to the housing in order to unscrew it and consequently the spool cap is not released from the housing but is screwed on more tightly.
The object of the invention is, with a.fishing reel of the kind described, to simplify for the user the operations of removing the spool cap from and re-attaching it to the fishing reel.
Accordingly the present invention provides a fishing reel having at least one line-gripping peg housed in a spoolcap which is movable, by depression of a press knob, between a restraining position in which the peg projects from the outer surface of the spool cap and a casting position in which the whole length of the peg is retracted into the spool cap, and means for detaching the spool cap from and re-attaching it to the fishing eel; wherein the spool cap and fishing reel are connected by a releasable coupling, and operating means to release the coupling is provided on the press knob in such a position that release of the coupling occurs after the shifting of -7 the spool cap into the casting position as a result of a further depression of the press knob. Consequently both the problematical unscrewing and rescrewing of the spool cap with their associated defects are avoided.
It is especially advantageous that with one and the same operating means, namely the press knob, both the casting position can be provided and also, as a result of a further depression, the spool cap can be released from the fishing reel. The angler thus does not need to remember any operation to remove the spool cap other than simply a further depression of the press knob. It should be observed here that the simplification does not only apply with one line-gripping peg but the invention also applies to fishing reels with several e.g. two line-gripping pegs.
An embodiment of the present invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 shows a longitudinal section of part of the fishing reel with the spool cap and housing cap in the restraining position i.e. with the line-gripping peg projecting from the spool cap; FIGURE la shows an analogous longitudinal section of the complete fishing reel; - 4 FIGURE 2 shows a section as in Figure 1 in the casting position, with the line-gripping peg retracted; FIGURE 3 shows a section as in Figures 1 and 2, but without the housing cap of the releasing position of the spool cap; FIGURE 4 shows a section of a retaining catch of the fishing reel; and FIGURE 5 shows on an enlarged scale the surface of the retaining catch shown in Figure 4.
A press knob 1 is situated in a spool cap 3 and is movable relative to the latter against a spring 2 in the direction of the longitudinal axis 4 of a fishing reel which is only partially shown here. On the inner side 5 of the press knob 1 facing the spool cap 3 there are two release catches 6 which, as a result of pressing down in the direction of the arrow 12, move into the position shown in Figure 2 (first stage of movement of the press knob), in which they push a retaining catch 7 downwards against the action of a spring 8 so far that the outer front edge 7' of the retaining catch no longer rests against the inner front face 9 of the line-gripping peg 10, as it does in Figure 1, but is beneath it. Consequently, the linegripping peg, the end 11 of which z 0 - 9; - projects outwards through the spool cap when in the restraining position shown in Figure 1, is now shifted inwards as a result of the action of the spring 13 into the so-called casting position, in whi ch it is arranged completely retracted into the spool cap so that the fishing line can be cast without any hindrance. The release catches 6 run parallel to the axis 4, or shaft of the fishing reel, and are provided with holding stops 15 which, in the restraining position (Figure 1), as a result of the action of the spring 2, rest against the counterstops 16 of the spool cap, i.e. as a result of the upward movement caused by the action of the spring the catches 6 are arrested in this holding position defining the position of the press knob 1 when the spool cap is in the restraining position. In addition a cylindrical housing cap 17, surrounding the spool cap, is shown which has a continuous circular groove 18 to receive the outer front end 11 of the line-gripping peg in the restraining position. The housing cap 17 also ensures that in the restraining position the line is in fact held by the line-gripping peg and does not slip past this on its outer surface. The housing cap 17 can be fixed in the reel base 27 of the fishing reel 28.
The transmission of force from the drive shaft 14 to the spool cap 3 is obtained through a drive washer 26 which is connected form-fitting both to the drive shaft 14 and also to the spool cap 3 (see Figures 1 to 3).
The press knob 1 can be pushed from the position in Figure 2 in the direction of the arrow 12' towards the spool cap 3 in the second stage of movement, until the end position-of this movement, namely the releasing position shown in Figure 3, is reached. This end positi.on can, for example, be defined as when the front edges 6' of the release catches 6 come into contact with retaining catch 7 whereby the spring 8 is completely compressed, so that the press knob 1 can not be pushed any further downwards (referring to the direction in the Figures).
In the positions in Figures 1 and 2, the spool cap 3 is connected with the fishing reel, more specifically with its shaft 14, by means of two resilient retaining arms 19 in such a way that the spring action of the retaining arms 19 presses the retaining arms in towards the shaft. As a result, projecting catches 20 of the retaining arms 19 engage in a circular groove 21 of the shaft 14 at its upper end as shown in the drawings. Operating surfaces 22 are provided on the inner side 5 of 1 11 1 7 - v the press knob 1 which, when the releasing position (Figure 3) is reached, come to bear on counteracting surfaces 23 of the retaining arms 19 and through these surfaces the retaining arms 19 are pivoted outwards to such an extent that their catches 20 are no longer engaged with the circular groove 21. In this position the spool cap 3 is released and it, including its press knob and the associated structural components, can be pulled upwards in the direction of the arrow 25. For this, the housing cap 17 must previously be removed. Shaping and position of the surfaces 22, 23 are adjusted to one another so that, in the position shown in Figure 3, the above mentioned displacement of the catch 20 from the circular groove 21 occurs. On withdrawal, the spool cap 3 is also pulled away from the drive washer 26. For this purpose the drive washer 26 is so well seated on the drive shaft 14 that it is held there, i.e. on removal of the spool cap the latter is released from the drive washer 26, but on the other hand the drive washer 26 remains on the drive shaft 14.
As mentioned already, it is a particular advantage of the invention that the successive stages of movement shown by the arrows 12, 12' enable the line-gripping peg to be retracted, and then the operating means 22, 23 for freeing and removal of the spool cap to be activated, in 8 - 7 successive stages. Fastening of the spool cap to the shaft 14 is achieved simply by pushing it on, whereby as a result of the intrinsic springiness of the retaining arms 19 their catches 20 spontaneously engage in the circular groove 21. Positioning the line-gripping peg in its holding position, in which its outer end 11 projects beyond the outer surface of the spool cap (Figure 1) occurs in a known way as a result of the fact that, on both sides, the retaining catch 7 possesses guiding edges 24 reaching to its perimeter (see Figures 4 and 5), so that with a rotation of the shaft 14 and consequently a movement of the line-gripping peg 10 relative to the retaining catch 7, the front edge 9 of the peg 10 comes against one of the outer ends 24' of the edges 24, so that as a result of the action of the spring 8 the retaining catch 7 can resume its position shown in Figure 1, in which its outer front edge 7' rests against the front surface 9 of the line-gripping peg.
