Abstract
A fish food dispenser comprising a food store (2) and a receptacle (5) which can be moved between a first position where the inlet (7) is in communication with the store to admit food to the receptacle and a second position where the outlet (8) of the receptacle is opened to discharge the food in the receptacle; spring (9) biasses the receptacle to the first position. <IMAGE>
Description
FISH FOOD DISPENSER
This invention relates to a dispenser for fish food, particularly but not exclusively for domestic or other small aquaria.
Fish food is commonly unpleasant to handle manually. Moreover it is easy to accidentally overfeed fish by dispensing portions of food which are too large. This may occur, for example, when fish are fed by children who do not understand that fish require comparatively small portions of food. The present invention seeks to overcome these problems.
According to the present invention a pet food dispenser comprises a store for food, a receptacle located in the store, the receptacle having an inlet and an outlet, the receptacle being movable between a first position to receive food from the store through said inlet and a second position wherein the outlet is open to the exterior of the dispenser so that food disposed in the receptacle is dispensed.
Use of a dispenser in accordance with this invention allows food to be dispensed without manual contact. Moreover, use of an appropriately dimensioned receptacle allows suitably sized portions to be dispensed. The dispenser may be portable and is preferably adapted to be hand held.
The dispenser preferably incorporates means for example a spring, arranged to bias the receptacle into the the first position. A finger plate or like arrangement may be provided to facilitate movement of the receptacle into the second position.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the food is provided in a cartridge removably receivable in the store. Means are provided for preventing the cartridge from interfering with the operation of the receptacle.
The invention is further decribed by means of example but not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:
Fig.l shows a dispenser in accordance with this
invention;
Fig.2 is an end elevation of the dispenser;
Fig.3 is a cross section on B-B of Fig.l; Fig.4 is a cross section on A-A of Fig.3; Fig.5 is a cross section on C-C of Fig.l; Fig.6 illustrates a cartridge of fish food which
can be used with the dispenser of Fig.l.
The fish food dispenser shown in Figs.l to 5 of the drawings comprises a casing 1 which forms a store 2 for fish food and a cover 3. The lower part of the store 2 has a gradually decreasing cross sectional area, tapering towards an aperture 4. A receptacle 5, attached to a runner 6 is mounted for sliding movement within the casing 1. The receptacle 5 has inlet and outlet apertures at the top 7 and bottom 8 respectively. In a first position, shown in the drawings, the inlet 7 to the receptacle communicates with the outlet 4 of the store 2, the outlet 8 of the receptacle being closed by the lower casing of the dispenser. A pbrtion of fish food contained in the store 2 can fall into the receptacle. A spring 9 biasses the receptacle into the first position.
Actuation of the dispenser by depression of a finger plate 11 integral with the receptacle, causes the receptacle to move (to the right in Fig.4) so that outlet 4 of the store is closed by the runner 6 and the outlet 8 of the receptacle is brought into the second position in communication with an outlet 12 in the casing of the dispenser. A portion of fish food is thus released from the dispenser. The receptacle returns to the first position under the action of the spring.
A shoulder 10 abuts the wall of the store and thereby serves to prevent excessive depression of the finger plate 11.
Referring to Fig.6 the fish food can be provided in a cartridge 30 in the form of a container having a removable cover 32 which is sealed onto the container in a fluid tight manner. In order to load the dispenser the cover 3 is removed from the store and the dispenser inverted. The sealed cover 32 is removed from the cartridge and the store lowered over the cartridge. Cover 34 is then replaced on the store and the dispenser returned to its normal disposition and cover 3 replaced. Fish food can fall under gravity from the cartridge towards the bottom of the housing and be dispensed by operation of the receptacle 5.
The cartridge itself rests on the horizontal wall 36 and thus cannot fall down to the bottom of the store and interfere with proper operation of the receptacle 5. When the food is exhausted the empty cartridge is removed and a fresh cartridge replaced.
The invention is not restricted to the above described embodiments and many variations and modifications can be made.
Claims (6)
1. A pet food dispenser comprises a store for food, a receptacle located in the store, the receptacle having an inlet and an outlet, the receptacle being movable between a first position to receive food from the store through said inlet and a second position wherein the outlet is open to the exterior of the dispenser so that food disposed in the receptacle is dispensed.
2. A dispenser as claimed in Claim 1, wherein means are provided for biassing the receptacle towards the first position.
3. A dispenser as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the inlet to the receptacle is closed when the receptacle is in the second position.
4. A dispenser as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the outlet from the receptacle is closed when the receptacle is in the first position.
5. A dispenser as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a cartridge containing the food is removably receivable in the store, means being provided for preventing the store from interfering with the operation of the receptacle.
6. A dispenser substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
