Abstract

A stud and retaining member assembly which is intended for releasably securing a hinged member such as a door, tail board or drop side of a vehicle, the fastening including an eye which is connected to or forms part of said door, tail board or drop side of a vehicle. The fastening comprises a stud 10 formed at one end with a slot in which is disposed a resilient buffer member 22 arranged to engage a retaining member in the form of an elongated slotted plate 11 at least when the latter in use is in an operative position in which it extends in a direction at right angles to said stud. <IMAGE>

Description

FASTENING MEANS This invention relates to fastening means which is primarily intended for use in releasably securing a hinged member such as a door, tail board or drop side of a vehicle, the fastening means being of the kind which comprises a stud and an eye, said stud being adapted to be secured to a fixed member such as a stanchion or frame member so as to project therefrom, the outer end portion of said stud being formed with a slot in which is located a retaining member in the form of an elongated plate, said eye being adapted to be secured to the aforesaid hinged member it is required to secure so that the eye can be engaged with the stud after the retaining member has been turned into a position in which it is generally aligned with the stud whereafter the eye and associated hinged member is retained in position by turning the retaining member to a fastening position in which it extends at right angles to the stud to prevent separation of the eye from the stud.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved stud and retaining member assembly for use in a fastening means of the above specified kind.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a stud and retaining member assembly for use in a fastening means of the kind specified wherein the slotted end of the stud is provided with a resilient buffer member which is adapted to engage the retaining member at least when the latter is disposed in its position in which it extends at right angles to the stud, said buffer member then acting to hold this retaining member in position and inhibit rattle between it and said stud.
Conveniently, the stud is formed with a hole in the bottom of its slot, one end of said resilient buffer member (which may for example be formed of rubber or a suitable synthetic resin material) being inserted into said hole and frictionally retained therein whilst the other end of the buffer member projects outwardly into the adjacent end of said slot.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a part-sectional side view of one example of an assembly constructed in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is also a part-sectional side view of the example shown in Figure 1 but with the retaining member of the assembly disposed in its operable position in which it releasably retains the associated eye.
Referring now to the drawings there is shown therein an assembly which includes a stud 10 and a retaining member 11. One end of said stud 10 is threaded and on this threaded end is mounted a nut 12 whereby the stud can be secured to a stanchion or frame member or other part which is generally indicated in the drawing by reference numeral 13. More particularly such member 13 may form a part of a vehicle. The aforesaid assembly comprising the stud 10 and retaining member 11 forms part of fastening means which also include an eye which is indicated in Figure 2 by reference numeral 14 and which in use would project from a hinged member 15 such as a door, tail board or drop side of the vehicle.
The end of said stud 10 opposite to its threaded end is slotted (as indicated by reference numeral 16) and across said slot extends a pin 17 which acts as a pivot pin for the retaining member 11. Furthermore said retaining member 11 is formed with an elongated slot 18 which is arranged so that its length is somewhat inclined to the longitudinal axis of the retaining member 11, one side of said slot namely side 19 being of straight configuration whereas the opposite side 20 is provided with a series of inwardly directed projections which are arranged so that a recess is formed between each pair of adjacent projections.Said retaining member 11 can thus be turned on its pivot pin 17 between an inoperative position as shown in Figure 1 in which its longitudinal axis is generally aligned with the axis of the stud 10 and an alternative, operative, position as shown in Figure 2 in which the longitudinal axis of said retaining member extends transversely to said axis of the stud. The retaining member 11 is of course first set to its inoperative position as shown in Figure 1 so that when the hinged member 15 of the vehicle is moved towards the fixed member 13 then the aperture 21 in the eye 14 can pass over the retaining member 11 whereafter said retaining member is then turned into its operative position as shown in Figure 2 in which it releasably retains said hinged member 15 in its closed position relative to the member 13.In said operative position of the retaining member 11 it is pushed downwardly until a part of the periphery of said pivot pin 17 engages one of the recesses between a pair of adjacent projections of the side 20 of said slot 18, it being understood that the above mentioned inclination of said slot 18 relative to the longitudinal axis of the retaining member results in the width of the material in said retaining member between the side 20 of the slot 18 and the adjacent edge of the said retaining member increasing in an upwards direction as seen in Figure 2.
In accordance with the present invention the aforesaid slotted end of the stud 10 is provided with a resilient buffer member which is indicated by reference numeral 22 which may be formed from rubber or a synthetic resin material or any other suitable resilient material and conveniently said buffer member is retained in position by forming a hole at the bottom of said slot 16 in the stud 10 whereby one axial end of the buffer member 22 can be pushed into said hole and retained frictionally therein, the opposite axial end of said buffer member 22 then projecting outwardly into said slot 16.As will be seen from Figure 2 when the retaining member 11 is arranged in its operative position and pushed downwardly as above described the wedge-like action which is promoted by the aforesaid material between said side 20 of the slot 18 and the adjacent edge (indicated by reference numeral 23) of the retaining member 11 will result in a part of such edge 23 engaging the free axial end of the resilient buffer 22.
Such an arrangement will help to hold the retaining member in its operative position and will also prevent or inhibit any annoying rattle that might otherwise be caused between the retaining member 11 and the adjacent eye 14 if no such buffer member 22 were provided. It may also be arranged that said outer axial end of the buffer 22 engages the end surface 24 of the retaining member 11 when the latter is in its inoperative position as shown in Figure 1 and such an arrangement may make it easier to set the retaining member in a position in which it is truly aligned with the stud 10, that is to say when it is required to set the retaining member in its inoperative position in which it can receive the aforesaid eye 14.
The stud 10 as above described may be machined from a piece of bar material or alternatively it may be formed from two previously formed parts which are welded together and in the latter case the buffer member 22 should be formed of a material which will not be destroyed or unduly damaged by any heat which may arise from such welding operation.

Claims (4)

Claims:

A stud and retaining member assembly for use in a fastening means of the kind specified wherein the slotted end of the stud is provided with a resilient buffer member which is adapted to engage the retaining member at least when the latter is disposed in its position in which it extends at right angles to the stud, said buffer member then acting to hold this retaining member in position and inhibit rattle between it and said stud.
2. A stud and retaining member assembly as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said stud is formed with a hole in the bottom of its slot, one end of said resilient buffer member being inserted into said hole and frictionally retained therein whilst the other end of the buffer member projects outwardly into the adjacent end of said slot.
3. A stud and retaining member assembly as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the outer axial end of said resilient buffer member is arranged to engage the adjacent end surface of the retaining member when the latter is in its operative position.
4. A stud and retaining member assembly for use in a fastening means of the kind specified, said assembly being substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
