Abstract

A pocket knife is maintained in an extended condition with its blade 19 extending from its handle by detent means comprising a leaf spring 17 which is disposed within the handle and which engages the blade. A release means comprising a lever mechanism 20 is mounted on the handle and is actuatable to move the leaf spring out of engagement with the blade to allow the blade to be folded into the handle. <IMAGE>

Description

POCRET-KNIFE This invention relates to pocket-knives and more particularly to pocket-knives of the type comprising a handle and a blade pivotally connected to one end portion of the handle so as to fold into a recess in the handle for a closed condition of the knife and to extend from the handle in an open condition of the knife.
An object of the invention is to provide such a pocket-knife with means which can maintain the knife in its open condition but which can be readily released to allow the blade to be folded into the handle.
To this end the invention includes a pocket-knife of the above-mentioned type provided with detent means disposed within the handle for engaging the blade when the blade extends from the handle to maintain the knife in said open condition, and release means mounted on said handle and actuatable for moving said detent means out of engagement with said blade to allow said blade to be folded intoXsaid handle.
In two embodiments of the invention, described hereinafter, said detent means comprises a leaf spring having one end portion secured to the handle and the other end portion disposed so as to engage said blade when said blade extends from the handle to maintain the knife in said open condition, said release means being arranged such that on actuation thereof, in said open condition of the knife, said release means moves said other end portion of said leaf spring out of engagement with said blade to allow said blade to be folded into the handle.
The release means preferably comprises a lever mechanism connected to said detent means such that operation of said lever mechanism causes said detent means to be moved out of engagement with said blade.
In the above-mentioned embodiments, the lever mechanism is connected to said leaf spring such that on operation of said lever mechanism said other end portion of said leaf spring is pulled out of engagement with said blade against the bias of said leaf spring.
Advantageously, the lever mechanism may comprise a lever with one end portion connected via a linkage to said leaf spring, and at least the other end portion of the lever being disposed at least partly in an aperture in one side of said handle to allow manual depression thereof.
In order that the invention may be well understood, the above-mentioned embodiments, which are given by way of example only, will now be described further, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a pocket-knife; Figure 2 is a bottom view of the same knife; Figure 3 is a sectional view of the knife taken along the line A-A in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a top view of another pocket-knife; Figure 5 is a side view of the same knife; Figure 6 is a bottom view of the same knife; Figure 7 is a sectional view of the knife taken along the line A-A in Figure 4; Figure 8 is a detail of Figure 5; and Figure 9 is a sectional view of the knife taken along line B-B in Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a pocket-knife 10 with a release, or unbaring mechanism 11. Said knife comprises bolsters 12, handle 13, bolster lining 14, abutment spring 15, scale 16, a detent in the form of a leaf spring 17, fastening means 18 and blade 19.
The release mechanism is located on the longitudinal axis of the knife and comprises a lever mechanism formed from an element 20 which is attached to the knife by means of pivot 21 which allows its rotation. Element 22 is nosed to link element 20 to leaf spring 17. In the embodiments, element 22 is pivotally attached to element 20 by means of a ring type configuration and to leaf spring 17 by means of threads as illustrated in the cross-sectional views shown in Figures 3 and 9.
In use, pressure is exerted on surface 23 of the element 20 which initiates rotation of element 20, therefore pulling leaf spring 17 out of engagement with the blade 19 and allowing rotation of the blade into the handle.
It will be appreciated that the pocket-knife is maintained in an extended condition with its blade 19 extending from its handle by detent means comprising the leaf spring 17 which is disposed within the handle and which engages the blade, and that the release means comprising the lever mechanism is mounted on the handle and is actuatable to move the leaf spring out of engagement with the blade to allow the blade to be folded into the handle.
From the above it will be appreciated that the release mechanism in the illustrated embodiments is mechanically simple, reliable, ergonomical and aesthetically pleasing.

CLAIMS:
1. A pocket-knife of the type comprising a handle and a blade pivotally connected to one end portion of the handle so as to fold into a recess in the handle for a closed condition of the knife and to extend from the handle in an open condition of the knife, characterised by detent means disposed within the handle for engaging the blade when the blade extends from the handle to maintain the knife in said open condition, and release means mounted on said handle and actuatable for moving said detent means out of engagement with said blade to allow said blade to be folded into said handle.
2. A Ti pocket knife as claimed in claim 1, wherein said detent means comprises a leaf spring having one end portion secured to the handle and the other end portion disposed so as to engage said blade when said blade extends from the handle to maintain the knife in said open condition, said release means being arranged such that on actuation thereof, in said open condition of the knife, said release means moves said other end portion of said leaf spring out of engagement with said blade to allow said blade to be folded into the handle.
3. A pocket knife as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said release means comprises a lever mechanism connected to said detent means such that operation of said lever mechanism causes said detent means to be moved out of engagement with said blade.
4. A pocket knife as claimed in claims 2 and 3, wherein said lever mechanism is connected to said leaf spring such that on operation of said lever mechanism said other end portion of said leaf spring is pulled out of engagement with said blade against the bias of said leaf spring.
5. A pocket knife as claimed in claim 3 or 4, wherein said lever mechanism comprises a lever with one end portion connected via a linkage to said leaf spring, and at least the other end portion of the lever being disposed at least partly in an aperture in one side of said handle to allow manual depression thereof.
6. A pocket-knife substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1 to 3 or 4 to 9 of the accompanying drawings
