Abstract

A seat (1) is releasably connected to a pushchair frame (2) consisting of two U-shaped members (3,4) the free ends of which are secured to respective axles (5,6) carrying wheels (7). One U-shaped member extends upwardly to form a handle (8). The seat (1) is detachably mounted in the frame (2) by means of releasable support fittings which including locking bolts (17) adapted to pass through locating holes in the frame (2) aligned with screw-threaded holes in the sides of the seat (1) in which the bolts (17) are engageable. The child carrier further includes a vehicle seat support frame which is adapted to be fitted to a vehicle and to support the seat (1) when the latter is detached from the frame (2) and fitted in the interior of the vehicles. <IMAGE>

Description

A CHID CARRIES This invention relates to a carrier for a child Various child carriers are known such as pushchairs and perambulators for transporting a child,as well as seats for carrying children in cars.
An aim of the present invention is to provide a child carrier which has a dual purpose as a wheeled carrier or as a seat in a car0 According to the present invention there is provided a child carrier comprising a seat releaseably connected te a wheeled seat support frame, wherein the seat can be removed froc the support fianie and fitted in a car or other vehicle, Preferably a car seat support frame is Frovided to support the seat when fitted in the interior of a a car or other vehicle.
Conveniently, the seat and support frame are provided with releaseable support fittings in the form of pins and pin support lugs fitted to the seat and support frame respectively, locking bolts being provided to secure the seat in one or more angular positions relative to the support frame.
In a preferred construction the support frame has a threaded hole at each side to receive screw threaded bolts, the sides of the seat having two or nacre locating holes for receiving locking bolts, when aligned with the threaded holes, to secure the seat relative to the support frame The sides of the seat may also be provided with slots to receive a car seat bel.t for restraining the occupant The car seat support may be made cf a moulded plastics material or alternatively of a metal tubular frame.
The seat may be moulded from a plastics material and provided with a padded seat cover secured to the seat moulding by press studs The seat cover may be supplied in different sizes to accommodate children of different ages and sizes.
The seat is conveniently provided with E child restraining harness.
Embodiments of the present invention will flow be described, by way of example dnly, with reference to the accempanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a child carrier according to the invention; Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of a releaseable connection for the supporting frame; Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of the seat connection ; Figure 4 is a perspect-ve view of a locking bolt for securing the seat to a supporting frame and Figure 5 is a perspective view of a car supporting frame for the seat when used in a car, The child carrier has a seat 1 removably mounted on a pushchair frame 2.The frame has two U-shaped tubular members 3 and 4 the free ends of which are secured to axles 5 and 6 respectively, carrying wheels 7. One U-shared member 3 i3 longer than the other and forms a handle 8 for the person wheeling the pushchair to grip. The axles support a fcctplate 9 and a wire-mesh basket 10 for carrying shopping or other articlesn The sides of frame member 3 are each joined by a metal sleeve 11 formed with a pin support bracket 12 for receiving pins 13 extending outwardly from the sides of the eat 10 Located below each pin support bracket 11 are threaded holes 14 which can align with two corresponding holes 15 and 16 in the sides of the seat0 A locking bolt 17, see Figure 4, can be located in one of the two holes 15 and 16 which is aligned with the threaded hole 14 in the pushchair frame and tightened by rctating the head with the fingers to secure the seat firmly to the frame 2.
The seat 1 can be positioned on the pushchair frame 2 in one cf two positions, the upright sitting pcsition or the angular reclining position depending upon which of the two holes 15 and 16 are aligned with the threaded hole 14 in the sleeve 10. The seat 1 has two slotted holes 18 formed in the sides of the seat to form seat belt fixing points.
The seat has a dual purpose in that it can re readily removed from the pushchair support frame by unscrewing the locking bolts 17 end lifting the seat from the frame and transferring it to the interior of a cer or other vehicle.
The seat is mounted on acar seat support 19 as illustrated in Figure 5, this can conveniently be moulded from a plastics material or from a metal tubular frame of sufficient rigidity for supporting the seat un the rear seat of a car0 The sides of the car seat support have slotted portions forining pin supports 20 for the pirs 13 projecting from the sides of the seat 1. A threaded hole 21 formed by a metal or hard plastic insert, is located below each of the pin slots 20 or receiving the threaded locking bolt 17.The seat can again he positioned in either an upright sitting position or an angular reclining position depending on which of the holes 15 or 16 are aligned with the threaded holes 21 in the car seat support. The car seat support frame can be provided with securing eyes, not shown, so thEt the seat can be used with existing seat belts or with child seat anchoring straps.
The seat can be positioned in the forward or reverse position cn the pushchair frame or in the car. The securing device allows the diagonal strap of the seat belt to be fixed across the front of the seat when it is in the reverse position The seat may b covercd with a padded seat cover 22 which is provided in two different sizes to allow for the growth of the child0 Pre studs, not shown, are provided at appropriate places on the seat cover to enable it to be fitted to the moulded seat. The seat covers ae provided with apertures and fittings to enable a full childharness to be fitted in the conventional way to hold the child securely in the seat 4; Various other modifications c be made to the child carrier according to the invention, for exemple, tbe seat can be moulded to incorporate its own car seat support enabling it to be fitted directly to the interior of a car eliminating the need of a separate car seat support0 It will be appreciated that the dual purpose seat and support frame can eliminate the need of a car owner incurring the cost of installing a child car seat as well as purchasing a complete pushchair The frame of the pushchair can be made to collapse into a compact unit for storage in the boot of a small car.
